Weather Shield Highlights Versatile Product Lines at 2015 International Builders Show / Design & Construction Week - January 13, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

MEDFORD, Wis. (PRWEB) January 12, 2015

Weather Shield Windows & Doors is making the most of its return to the International Builders Show (booth C4243), Jan. 20-22, 2015, by highlighting the breadth and depth of its product offering, including the Contemporary Collection, Weather Shield Premium Coastal, the Premium Series, the Signature Series, the Aspire Series and the Visions Series. A testimony to the companys ReInvented status, the entire booth is a must-see, with the Premium Series bi-fold, and lift & slide patio doors, and the Contemporary Collection corner window considered total show-stoppers.

Were thrilled to share our new products with attendees of Design & Construction Week, said Dave Koester, brand manager for Weather Shield. In the past two years, we have introduced several new product lines, innovations that yield great thermal performance and energy efficiency, and options that really deliver a wow factor. People are going to be impressed when they see the latest from Weather Shield.

Premium Series Weather Shields IBS booth showcases the companys architectural product line, the Premium Series, with several custom configurations of windows, windows and transoms, patio doors and patio doors with transoms. The units highlight the many interior and exterior color, hardware and glazing options available in the Premium Series. The Premium Series products on display include:

The Contemporary Collection Weather Shields newest introduction, the Contemporary Collection, preserves outside views with its narrow-profile frames and sash, and stiles and rails that lend a sleek appearance and more exposed glass. A contemporary square glazing bead complements the narrow profiles of the units. The Contemporary Collection builds on the Premium Series, and as such is available in all the same styles, except double hung and sliding windows. The collection also includes a vanishing corner window, which has two panes that meet in the corner with only a very narrow strip of wood and strong aluminum internal support in between. The Contemporary Collection also offers similar options such as an unlimited exterior clad color palette and several choices of interior wood species, which come natural, primed, painted or prefinished. Multiple exterior anodized color options provides a stunning radiant metallic finish, and a black poly interior finish delivers a smooth and satiny look.

The Contemporary Collection products featured in the exhibition at the Builders Show include:

Weather Shield Premium Coastal The Weather Shield Premium Coastal product line of aluminum clad wood windows and patio doors are specifically designed for distinctive homes in coastal climates. The durable aluminum clad exteriors come standard with paint that meets or exceeds strict AAMA 2605 specifications for increased performance and durability. And, they are available in a nearly endless color palette: 12 standard colors, 45 designer colors and 8 anodized aluminum exteriors. Interiors can be specified in one of 7 species and 6 choices in finishes. Resistant to corrosion caused by salt spray, special seacoast hardware is an available as an option on Premium Coastal products.

Homeowners have several choices in glazing for their Premium Coastal windows and doors, ranging from standard insulated glass, to single-glazed impact that offers protection that predominantly meets the stringent Miami-Dade County testing requirements, to Zo-e-shield Coastal, which combines insulated impact resistant glazing with the energy efficiency of Zo-e-shield.

Builders Show guests can see Weather Shields Premium Coastal LifeGuard casement with craftsman bronze exterior/vertical grain fir interior with golden oak stain, insulated impact glass and tan hardware. This unit is rated to +55/-70 psf wind zone 4 (D).

Signature Series Weather Shields Signature Series is a complete mid-priced, aluminum clad product line for homeowners who desire wood windows with the industrys most popular options. The Signature Series delivers excellent energy efficiency and thermal performance, dependable construction, and a host of interior and exterior color and hardware options.

'Good Samaritan' spots burglars with wheelie bin full of loot and calls police - January 13, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

A NURSE whose home was ransacked during a burglary has thanked a "Good Samaritan" who told police where the criminals were.

Anne Spiller, aged 56, returned from work in the evening of October 27 to find her Deane home had been burgled, with the patio doors smashed and countless items taken.

On Tuesday, 24-year-old Luke Walker, who has a string of burglary convictions to his name, appeared at Bolton Crown Court and was given a jail term of three years and four months for his role in the burglary.

Two teenagers, aged 13 and 14, also pleaded guilty to taking part in the burglary and will be sentenced at a later date at Bolton Magistrates Court.

The offenders were found with the majority of Ms Spillers property at a house in Fern Hill Avenue, Deane after a resident saw them suspiciously pushing a wheelie bin in the road which they were using to transport the stolen goods.

Items stolen included laptops, a TV, digital cameras, mobile phones, watches, sunglasses, perfume, jewellery, underwear and even bottles of spirits.

Speaking after the sentencing, the 56-year-old victim said: I just wanted to say a big thank you to the person who spotted them in the act and rang the police straight away.

If it wasnt for that person then this would have been very different and they might not have been caught, so I want to say thank you for that.

A large amount of the haul was returned to Ms Spiller, although an Ipod, a Kindle device and some jewellery with sentimental value has not been returned to her.

She said she was pleased to see Walker given a lengthy jail term for the burglary which left her feeling not right for weeks.

Burglar steals 16,000 CASH given as wedding gifts during break-in at terraced home in Coventry - January 13, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

A burglar thought he had hit the jackpot when he found envelopes containing a total of more than 16,000 after breaking into a terraced house.

The cash had been given by friends and relatives as wedding gifts to the owners son and his bride, a judge has heard.

Brendon Dacres, 22, of Elmsdale Avenue, Foleshill, Coventry, pleaded guilty at the crown court in Leamington to the burglary.

He was jailed for 20 months consecutive to a six-month sentence he is already serving for an attempted burglary for which he was on bail at the time.

Prosecutor Lal Amarasinghe said that on October 10 the householder left his end-of-terrace home in Coundon and when he returned that afternoon the back-door key was in the lock from the inside.

He managed to get in and found that the patio doors were open and the downstairs rooms had been rummaged through.

A total of 16,670 in cash had been taken, and Mr Amarasinghe explained that the owners son had recently got married, and the money was in envelopes friends and relatives had given to the couple, who were said to be devastated.

In addition jewellery, some of it of sentimental value, worth 4,780 and two laptops with family photos on them had been stolen.

A spot of blood found outside the patio doors was subsequently identified as matching Dacres, who was later arrested at his home less than half a mile away, but none of his haul was recovered.

He denied the offence, claiming he had been at a friends home during the day and had left at around 3pm and walked straight home but later pleaded guilty.

Renovation Solutions: Why upgrading your front door will help you save money on your energy bill - January 12, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Editor's note: A version of this column has previously run on deseretnews.com and the authors' blog, renovationdesigngroup.com.

Energy-efficient updates are a good idea any time of the year. There is, however, a more measurable and meaningful reason to go green during the colder months. You can ease the pain of the winter heating bill by making a few simple changes to your outside doors. These simple changes can enhance the energy efficiency of your entire house, keeping you warmer and saving you money all winter long.

Doors and windows are basically large holes cut in the thermal envelope of your house. Even under the best of conditions, the R-value (the measure of the thermal resistance of a material or assembly) of doors and windows is significantly less than that of the wall in which they sit. Without the proper unit or correct installation, air and heat may be leaking out, driving up your energy bill.

There are three common types of exterior door materials: wood, fiberglass and steel. Of these, wood is the most beautiful, but it is also the least energy efficient. Insulated doors have a core of foam insulation, which increases thermal resistance. Any glass within the door frame should also be insulated, meaning two panes of glass at a minimum. This is especially important if the doors are mostly glass, such as patio (sliding) or French doors.

Energy.gov explains the energy efficiency of the different doors by the R-values:

"The R-values of most steel and fiberglass-clad entry doors range from R-5 to R-6 (not including the effects of a window). For example: A 1 inch (3.81 cm) thick insulated door without a window offers more than five times the insulating value of a solid wood door of the same size.

"Glass or 'patio' doors, especially sliding glass doors, lose heat much faster than other types of doors because glass is a very poor insulator. Most modern glass doors with metal frames have a thermal break, which is a plastic insulator between the inner and outer parts of the frame that interrupts the transfer of cold to the interior of the assembly."

"Models with several layers of glass, low-emissivity coatings, and/or low-conductivity gases between the glass panes are a good investment, especially in extreme climates," according to energy.gov.

Over the long run, the additional cost of the unit is paid back many times over in energy savings.

Once you have selected an energy-efficient door unit, care must be taken to install it correctly. Proper weatherstripping is critical to keeping air from leaking. Updating the weatherstripping on an existing front door is a useful exercise, even if you are not replacing the door.
