Smoke BBQ Restaurant & Bar, sporting a new chic barn look, officially opened its patio on St. Patrick's Day just in time for warmer weather.
"There's not many options here for outdoor dining in Newport News," general manager Dylan Recchia of Newport News said. "We're fulfilling a need in the community and expanding our seating capacity."
On Tuesday, hundreds of people, including green-wearing St. Patrick's Day revelers, filtered through Smoke's newly renovated interior and and lighted patio. The mostly-covered patio currently seats 50, including a lounge section with love seat and gas fireplace. The patio will soon be expanded to seat 70, Recchia said.
Warwick Boulevard neighbors PMA Architecture in Hilton Village designed the patio and oversaw the renovation.
"The idea that we had was to make it feel like a barn," said project architect Katie Stodghill, PMA co-owner with husband Jeff. "Because it's Smoke a cool, hip barbecue joint."
Taking out a partial wall gave the bar area more space while making the restaurant feel more open, showing off the reclaimed bar wood siding, reclaimed wood chairs and new worn-look tables. The new metal roof and open wood of the patio contributes to the barn feel.
The darker exterior paint and accents inside making it feel more "smoked," Stodghill said. Sliding red bar doors can close off a private dining room with a backlit Smoke sign on the barn paneling, she added.
The project was approved for $30,000 in facade improvement grant funding by the Newport News Economic Development Authority, which PMA helped Smoke apply for, Stodghill said.
Spain Construction in Newport News performed the recent work, co-owner Kathy Walters said. Steve and Kathy Walters opened Smoke in the former Bill's Seafood space at 10900 Warwick Blvd. on Dec. 29, 2011 after catering and participating in barbecue competitions.
Smoke LLC bought the property in November 2011 for $550,000, according to online city records. The business has been upgrading the property since.

POLICE investigating a burglary in Stanford-le-Hope would like to identify the man in the photo.
Two men broke into a house in Southend Road at about 12.30pm on Tuesday, March 17 after smashing rear patio doors to get inside.
A messy search was carried out but at this stage it is not known what was stolen.
Police would like to speak to the man in the photo, who was described as white, about 6ft tall, and of chubby build. He had a brown beard and wore a dark blue jacket and dark blue hat.
Anyone with information is asked to call Dc Russ Chamberlain at Grays CID on 101.

The annual competition, sponsored by Cuprinol, is open to shed owners all over the country, but 2015 is the first year that Walter Micklethwait has entered.
Micklethwait's shed began life as a dilapidated hen house two years ago, with a rusted sheet-metal roof and wormwood-rotted joints. Beginning the restoration project, Micklethwait, who owns Inshriach estate, re-roofed the building during a blizzard before laying an oak parquet floor salvaged from a bar in nearby Aviemore.

With insulation left over from building materials used on a children's TV show, the shed began to take shape and the one-time antique dealer utilised glass doors and patio doors from the tip to finish the project.
The shed comprises the estate's farm shop, a ladies' waiting room, saloon bar and gin distillery. The shed has been the nerve centre for Crossbill Gin - the first Highland gin produced by Micklethwait and Jonathan Engels, owner of Pincer vodka. Using juniper berries harvested from the Inshriach estate, Crossbill Highland Gin was distilled in copper pots still bought from Portugal and distributed to selected retailers at the end of last year.
The shed also features a bar front and cupboards gleaned from Micklethwait's other projects, sash windows from a house in Edinburgh, a crittal window from the estate's mortgage adviser, timber from scrap or seconds from a sawmill.
The hens that previously lived in the shed before it was transformed into its current guise now live in a turret built from the discarded remains of the smallest and highest railway station in the British Isles.
Micklethwait said: "We're entering the competition because everybody loves a shed.
"It's mostly daft but there is a lot of imagination and creative re-use of stuff in amongst the entries.
"If we get anywhere it will be a bit of a laugh and we get to hang out with some like minded folk and meet George Clarke and his merry band of men."

One of Santa Fes bedrock locally owned retail stores, Leishmans of Santa Fe, is closing its doors after almost 40 years in business.
The store at 504 W. Cordova Rd. today announced a going-out-of-business starting Thursday (March 19).
Owner John Stevenson died in April 2012, after a lengthy fight with Lou Gehrigs disease.Stevensons wife, Katie, has been operating the store since then.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. I continued to operate the business successfully, but I have other interests, including two elderly parents that require my assistance, she said in todays announcement. Its to a point that I feel like this is what John would have wanted me to do.
The store started as Brooms Furniture, located on the Plaza, in the 1960s. In the 1980s, the store was acquired by the Leishman furniture family of Albuquerque and renamed. After working at Leishmans for about three years, John Stevenson bought the business in the early 1990s. His customers and his employees were really Johns family, said Katie Stevenson.
The store became known especially as the go-to place in Santa Fe for good patio furniture.
John recognized the importance of outdoor furniture to our lifestyle in Santa Fe, said Katie Stevenson. Our climate allows us to live outdoors much of the year. John supplied the furniture that made us comfortable on our patios, adding extra rooms to our homes without involving a contractor. Leishmans has the largest patio furniture showroom in New Mexico, the store says.
Youd have to travel to Denver, Dallas or Phoenix to find a larger one, Mrs. Stevenson said.
