Here's a surefire way to get into the Christmas spirit: Spend tonight gathered around a festively decorated Christmas tree sipping hot spiked drinks and raising money for Toys for Tots.

The Gibson's back patio isn't usually open during the winter, but the staff has placed a giant tree in the middle of it and strung greenery, bows and lights along the walls. Ornaments from Miss Pixie's and Target have been hung on the tree. You're invited to stop by and sip one of the new warming cocktails from the Gibson's winter menu -- I'm partial to the Starbucks-esque Chai Chi with Chairman's Reserve Rum -- and take a close look at the ornaments, which are all for sale. Proceeds from all ornament sales and a portion of tonight's cocktail sales will benefit Toys for Tots.
Doors open at 6 p.m. No reservations are necessary. The patio will remain open through Saturday, Jan. 4.

The Patio Theater has been beset by crumbling heating and cooling systems in recent months. First, the Northwest Side movie house shut down for the summer because owner Demetri Kouvalis couldnt afford the repairs to the Patios air conditioning system. They made it through that and were cruising through autumn when the Patios boiler broke down. The Northwest Chicago Film Society, which had only moved from the Portage to the Patio, decided to move again to the Gene Siskel Film Center while Kouvalis worked on getting the boiler repaired.
Kouvalis announced on the Patios Facebook page the heat has been fixed meaning guests attending the theaters screenings wont have to keep their coats on to watch movies. In the spirit of the season the Patios Dec. 21 screenings of Its a Wonderful Life will be free to all who attend.
The Frank Capra classic is being underwritten by Nate Cropp of Edward Jones Financial. In whats become a tradition at the Patio, the theaters entry will be transformed into a shopping center full of craft vendors so if youre looking for some last-minute stocking stuffers youll find plenty of opportunity. Santa Claus will also be in attendance and hopefully he wont be sitting on a throne of lies and smell like meat and cheese. (And doesnt that reference make us long for a screening of Elf?)
The showtimes on the 21st are at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Doors open at noon.

A spike in burglaries across a number of Uttlesford villages this month has spurred a police appeal.
Thousands of pounds of jewellery and small electrical items have been stolen after 17 houses in the district were broken into from December 1 to December 13.
Essex police are appealing for residents not to be complacent and to remain extra vigilant after properties in villages, such as Newport, Clavering, Stansted Mountfitchet, were targeted.
In most cases the offenders forced their way in through rear patio doors or windows during the daytime, often when the homes had been left unoccupied.
Two homes on Cherry Garden Lane, Newport, were targeted on the afternoon of December 12 - jewellery worth 1,000 was taken from one home and two gold wedding bands, a diamond engagement ring and a gold eternity ring worth 800 were stolen from the other. The total damage caused to both homes came to 1,500.
On December 10, another home in Newport, on Belmont Hill, was targeted in the early hours of the morning where an iPod, a digital safe and 250 euros were stolen, and a pair of reading glasses, security light and door were damaged costing 370.
A number of valuables worth nearly 6,000 were taken from a home on Church End, Clavering - including many items of jewellery, two guitars, a passport, and a will and death certificate - and jewellery, a laptop and a bag worth 1,000 were stolen from a house on Silver Street, Stansted Mountfitchet.
