Families were forced from their seaside homes as windows and patio doors were blown in by massive waves during stormy conditions yesterday morning.
Residents of several apartments and homes in Lahinch had to be taken to safety by fire personnel and garda after some of the worst storms ever witnessed in the west Clare resort town.
Dozens of mobile homes and caravans were left under water after the Atlantic surged several hundred metres inland.
A fishing boat was swept up on to the pier at Seafield near Quilty, while the only access to the quay was flooded by sea water for the first time in living memory.
Members of the Kilkee unit of the Irish Coast Guard evacuated several homes, with personnel carrying elderly people through waist-deep water.
Further storm-force winds and several tidal surges were expected last night.
The worst of the storms was felt in Lahinch, where large concrete wall cappings were tossed over 50m across the main promenade car park. Signs buckled under the pressure of the storm surge, while large sections of metal fencing along the shore front collapsed.
Clare County Council said Lahinch promenade would remain closed to the public until further notice. Members of the public have been advised to stay away from the seafront for their safety.
The first alarm was raised at around 5.30am when residents reported their properties being flooded. Several homes in Saddle Lane, close to the promenade in Lahinch, had to be evacuated. A family of eight was taken to safety from their home by Fire Brigade personnel while garda evacuated other properties.

The occupants of as many as 20 homes in the Seafield area have been advised to leave their homes until later today.

A bear is caught on video breaking into a home in Seminole County for the second time in less than a week.
According to homeowner Tramaine Gaines, the bear break-in took place on his back patio at his home in the Magnolia Plantation subdivision of Markham Woods Road in Lake Mary.
In the cell phone video, the black bear looks confident and comfortable on Gaines' back patio.
I was just more dumbfounded this time and now Im really trying to prepare and figure out how to avoid it happening again," explained Lake Mary homeowner Tramaine Gaines.
The first time Gaines admits it washis fault when the bear broke into his back patio on Christmas night. He remembers leaving some cooking oil out.
But Gaines quickly learned his lesson, making sure to not leave anything that would attract the bear on his back patio.
However, it appears the same bear came back for a second helping Sunday night.
"He looked at me, walked in, he pretty much just smelled the entire porch. He went down to the other end, came back down. Once he realized theres no food, he kinda just strolled right back out like passing through," Gaines recalled.
Gaines said one idea he has to keep the bear out is replacing his screened-in patio with glass doors.

London Bay Homes four-bedroom, five-bath Brighton, a single-family estate model at Quail West, is nearing completion. The custom model home overlooks the fairway and features two entry courtyards and multiple al fresco areas, including a private patio at the master bedroom, a great room loggia, and a large outdoor living room with fully equipped summer kitchen.
London Bays newest floor plan offers a study, great room, dining room, butlers pantry, family room and breakfast nook within its 6,326 square feet of living space. It will also have a mudroom and a combined tech and pet center. The design offers 9,954 total square feet, including attached and detached two-car garages and multiple outdoor areas.
The model will feature interior design by Romanza Interior Design, with a Ralph Lauren-inspired vibe with colors and collections reminiscent of the designers tailored and textural look.
