CASSELTON, N.D. - The oil boom in western North Dakota gets a lot of attention.
But follow Interstate 94 from Valley City to the cities of Mapleton and Casselton, and what you find might surprise you.
For a community the size of Casselton and Mapleton, you could call it a boom, said Mark Vaux, executive vice president for business development for the Greater Fargo Moorhead Economic Development Corp.
The story is similar in Valley City, said Jennifer Feist, director of the Valley City-Barnes County Development Corp.
Feist and Vaux say the economic buzz in the eastern part of the state isnt necessarily tied to energy.
It is value-added agriculture and technology and advanced manufacturing, those kinds of things, said Feist.
She said some of the things happening in Valley City population about 6,500 include:
A $20 million expansion of the John Deere seeding group facility in town.
The project resulted in the hiring of about 80 new employees over the past year, according to Feist.
A thriving software company called Eagle Creek Software Services, which provides software support and development services to Forbes Global 2000 companies.

Jackson Pollock, who was famous for his abstract art and his alcohol consumption, undoubtedly would have approved.
An upcoming series of painting classes held in area taverns and restaurants will enable participants to hold a brush in one hand and a beer mug in the other. They'll have to display considerable dexterity to complete their works without spilling Yuengling on them.
Will they be up to that challenge next week in Hough's Taproom and Brewpub in Greenfield and at several other establishments in the coming weeks? The evidence provided by the 2-year-old company that has successfully staged these events in other cities suggests so.
The South Carolina-based outfit, Colors and Bottles, brings to bistros and sports bars something not ordinarily seen during broadcasts of Penguins games on a 60-inch, high-definition television: Up to 30 cocktail enthusiasts and aspiring artists sitting in front of easels for several hours.
You're not there to make a masterpiece; you're there to make friends. You're there to make a good memory, said Leah St. Clair, vice president of customer service and event operations. And at the end of the night, you get to take home something you created.
Here's how it works: For $35 (or considerably less for industrious types who track down readily available online coupons), artist wannabes are equipped with acrylic paint, canvas and three hours of instruction from local painters working as Colors and Bottles contractors. By the evening's conclusion, after step-by-step instruction, the budding artists have a completed 16- by 20-inch painting to hang on their living room wall.
According to St. Clair, discounted drink specials often are offered by the taverns hosting the classes. Presumably, that's done to help speed the creative process.
Hey, it worked for Pollock.
The city's first Colors and Bottles event will be held Thursday in Hough's. It won't be the first offbeat event the place has hosted. The taproom holds a pig roast every summer as part of Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week festivities, and marketing coordinator Cassie Hough hopes that plying people with palettes proves as popular a draw for Hough's as swine on a spit.

Washington A world-famous symbol of democracy is going under cover, as workers start a two-year, $60 million renovation of the U.S. Capitol dome.
Curved rows of scaffolds, like Saturns rings, will encircle it next spring, enabling contractors to strip multiple layers of paint and repair more than 1,000 cracks and broken pieces. The dome will remain illuminated at night and partly visible through the scaffolding and paint-capturing cloths. But the Washington icon and portions of the Rotundas painted ceiling that lies below will be significantly obscured for many months.
The project is beginning just as the nearby Washington Monument sheds scaffolding that was used to repair damage from a 2011 earthquake.
Half-completed when Abraham Lincoln stood beneath it to summon the better angels of our nature in 1861, the Capitol dome has since towered over Washington, which limits building heights to 130 feet. Time, however, has let water seep through hundreds of cracks. The water attacks cast iron, which continues to rust and rust and rust, said Stephen T. Ayers, Architect of the Capitol.
This first major renovation in more than 50 years should add decades of structural integrity to the dome, which Ayers calls perhaps the most recognizable symbol across the globe. The $60 million undertaking will heal inner wounds, he said, without changing the way the dome looks from the ground.
Much of the work will be done at night and on weekends. It wont be as flashy as the 1993 helicopter removal and return of the 19-foot Statue of Freedom from the domes top.
The Capitols crowning piece is actually two domes, one nested under the other like Russian dolls, and separated by a web of cast iron braces hidden from view. From the ground it looks like a massive structure that would be too heavy for the building to support if it were indeed made of the solid stone it appears to be.
Instead it is cast iron painted to look like masonry. The lighter material and open space between the inner and outer domes create a physically sustainable structure. But its by no means puny.
The domes iron and masonry weigh 14.1 million pounds, said Kevin Hildebrand of the Capitol architects office. He led reporters up narrow, spiraling stairs that reach the Rotundas top, and then give access to the in-between world of girders separating the two domes. Ultimately the steps lead outdoors, to a panoramic walkway beneath the 12-columned lantern, or tholos, topped by the Statue of Freedom.
After a 1990 rainstorm left puddles on the Rotundas stone floor, workers found that bird nests had clogged gutters atop the Capitol, helping water penetrate outer walls and streak interior surfaces. Then they found bigger problems. Hundreds of cracks and pinholes in the cast iron exterior added to the seepage.

The dome of the U.S. Capitol building will be temporarily wrapped in scaffolding by the spring of next year as part of a two-year, $60 million renovation project torepair rust and more than 1,000 cracks in the domes structure.
The renovation, which will leave the Rotunda inside the dome ringed in netting to capture falling debris, includes repairing the cast iron, inserting filler where needed, removing old paint, and repainting the structure.
Visitors to the Capitol will be able to see the Apotheosis of Washington, the painting at the center of the Rotundas ceiling, through the center ofa white canopy system in the shape of a doughnut.
Much of the work will be done at night and on weekends. The architects office will update the renovations progress atwww.aoc.gov/dome.
Here are some facts about the Capitol Dome:
The project follows repairs on the Washington Monument, which was damaged in a 2011 earthquake. Scaffolding on the monument, which sits on the National Mall, is in the process of being dismantled.
