Military veterans graduate from Ga. apprenticeship program - January 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

ST. MARYS, Ga. There's a lot more to painting submarines, bridges and other structures on military bases than just grabbing a brush or a spray nozzle.

In fact, it's a 3-year apprenticeship to earn a journeyman's certification to work as a painter for a military contractor.

Eight military veterans who graduated from a training program Friday conducted in St. Marys will take that first step toward being a journeyman.

They will start working for a military contractor at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay on Tuesday.

The graduates completed an intensive two-week training program sponsored by the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades, District Council 77, said Ryan Enos, director of marketing for the organization. He said 70 veterans applied for the program.

"It was grueling to pick those candidates," Enos said.

The union is conducting similar training programs for veterans across the nation to help military contractors find employees to replace an aging civilian workforce.

"We need to bring in new blood," he said.

Military contractors like to hire veterans because they have learned many of the positive attributes such as understanding the importance of team work and the discipline to perform quality work.

Two construction workers killed at Lower Buckeye Jail - January 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

Two construction workers were killed Wednesday morning when the lift truck they were in toppled over.

The scissor lift was extended about 2 to 3 stories high and investigators believe it may have toppled over after being parked on a slope.

Lt. Brandon Jones with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said that the two men were contractors who were painting the side of a building.

"The inmates out in the rec yard actually saw this take place... they were able to see this and what they said two people just jumped off the roof. So to them it looked somebody jumping from the roof when in fact they were attached to this device and this device fell over" said Lt. Jones.

Paramedics responded and took both men to St Joseph's Hospital but medical staff were unable to save both men.

The names of the men are not being released by authorities, both men worked for Riddell Painting Company.

Undercover sting in Rancho Murieta targets illegal contractors - January 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A recent undercover sting operation in Rancho Murieta indicates that the statewide drought has provided illegal contractors with a new angle in approaching conservation-minded property owners, according to the Contractors State License Board.

The agencys Statewide Investigative Fraud Team, with assistance from the state Department of Consumer Affairs Division of Investigation, netted 11 people accused of illegal, unlicensed home improvement contracting during the sting operation conducted Thursday in the gated community.

A $3,800 bid was given to investigators for drought-resistant landscaping by an unlicensed operator, a bid that far exceeded the legal limit of $500 in combined labor and materials charges for unlicensed contractors working in the construction industry, according to a Contractors State License Board news release.

Eleven individuals were accused of illegal contracting after seeking bids for exterior painting, fencing and landscaping jobs, and each faces misdemeanor charges for contracting without a license, officials said.

Nine suspects face additional charges of illegal advertising. Contractors must place their license number in all advertisements. Those without licenses may advertise to do jobs valued at less than $500, but the ads must state that they are not licensed contractors.

Those receiving notices to appear in Sacramento Superior Court for arraignment March 27, along with their license classifications and alleged violations:

Paul Jon Shuey of Rancho Murieta, painting an decorating, contracting without a license and illegal advertising.

Thanh Nguyen of Elk Grove, landscaping, contracting without a license and illegal advertising.

Dave Marriott of Sacramento, landscaping, contracting without a license and illegal advertising.

Dustin Lee Arana of Sacramento, painting and decorating, contracting without a license and illegal advertising.

CDC Study: Painters and Contractors Still at Risk for Lead Poisoning - January 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Denver, CO (PRWEB) January 17, 2014

Despite marked reductions in environmental sources of lead and increased protection from occupational lead exposure, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that lead exposure on the job remains a significant health threat for painting contractors. The CDC conducted a 9-year study (Very high blood lead levels among adults United States, 2002 2011) of over 11,500 adults. Study results, published 11/29/13, concluded that occupational exposure accounted for 9 out of 10 cases of adult very high blood lead levels (BLLs). The CDC designates 10 g/dL as the reference BLL for adults; levels at or above that are considered elevated; very high is defined as greater than or equal to 40 g/dL.

Of 7,076 adults with high very blood lead levels whose known exposure source was their work, construction trades (comprised of painting and wallcovering contractors; highway, street and bridge construction; site preparation contractors; and other construction sectors) were among of the four largest categories represented. Painting, renovation and remodeling work also figured prominently in non-occupational exposure activities that caused high BLLs. In general, the CDC reported:

ECOBOND LBP, LLC (ECOBOND) is committed to protecting workers and occupants from the hazards of lead paint. As such, ECOBOND has invested significant resources in order to develop an effective and easy to use lead poisoning prevention product. This product, ECOBOND LBP, is based on the same ECOBOND technology that has been used successfully for over a decade to treat lead and other metals in over 1,000,000 tons of solid waste. Independent testing performed to US EPA-approved procedures confirmed in multiple testing that a standard application of ECOBOND LBP successfully seals and treats lead paint hazards.

ECOBOND LBP is available through Home Depot, Amazon, and ECOBOND LBP, LLC. To learn more, visit: http://www.ecobondlbp.com.
