Aviation painting firm folds - May 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Two years ago, Aviation Painting Services expected to be expanding now. Instead it will be closing its doors on Wednesday,

The company was hailed as a great success when it opened its $3 million facility at Hamilton Airport's Ingram Rd in December 2011.

As the only certified and purpose-built aircraft painting operation in New Zealand initial demand for its services was huge.

Four months into operation it had painted 15 turbo-prop passenger and commercial aircraft, light planes and helicopters. It had also painted two Air New Zealand Eagle Air B1900s, and had another in the pipelines. It had work booked in until the end of 2013, and twenty staff were employed in the building, with 15 contractors on call. APS had to turn away work on larger aircraft because its 32m by 32m painting booth was not big enough.

At the time director Phil Hanrahan said the company had earmarked land for a $10m expansion in 2014 so it could work on bigger aircraft. The goal for expansion was to attract work from around the Pacific. New Zealand Trade and Enterprise had part funded the venture through funding given to the Waikato Aviation Cluster.

However, Hanrahan confirmed the company would close up this week.

"Initially there was a fair bit of work. But in the last two years there has been less and less," he said.

"There were a couple of other factors.

"We were disappointed over the lack of support from the CAA [Civil Aviation Authority]."

He said the other factor was aircraft were being painted in non-certified facilities which were "much cheaper and we can't compete."

Exterior Anxiety: Painting the outside of your house is a lot more than just picking a color - May 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

This Brainerd homeowner used Sherwin-Williams version of a color visualizer app to select several different possible color palettes for his home, which is now painted white with black shutters.

This Brainerd homeowner used Sherwin-Williams version of a color visualizer app to select several different possible color palettes for his home, which is now painted white with black shutters.

Andy Vincent, who has been painting houses for more than 20 years, lists three must-haves when it comes to painting the exterior of a house.

    * Clean. Get all dirt and debris off the old paint.

    * Dry. Once you clean it, which will definitely include water, you have to give it a day or so to completely dry.

    * Dull. "Paint will not bind to anything shiny," he says. You don't have to sand the heck out of the old paint, he says, just use it enough to knock the sheen off.

Randy Wilson hears it all the time. Someone calls and says the outside of their house needs a new paint job because one or more sections have discolored or lost their luster.

When he gets out there, though, he sees the real problem.

"Usually, when they start thinking about painting, they see some kind of problem with the paint, but it's really the roof or the gutters, some kind of leak or something's rotted," says Wilson, a professional painter in Chattanooga. "When we go out and look at them ourselves, we check all those things and, if it's gutters or carpentry work, that's something we do because it's something we run into on almost every job."

Terra Nova grads take on summer painting business - May 8, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By Jean Bartlett, Correspondent

Submitted photo College student entrepreneurs Michael Harold and Bill Mullen.

Currently in the last quarter of his sophomore year at UC Santa Cruz, heading towards a degree in business management Economics, Pacifican Michael Harold is interning with College Works Painting. Founded in 1993, CWP teaches undergraduate students strong painting skill sets, organizational management, marketing skills and leadership, with a focus on satisfied customers.

Harold's professional painting business starts this summer. "We begin painting in mid-June and end in mid-September," Harold said.

Harold's project manager is UC Berkeley sophomore Bill Mullen. Also a Pacifican, Mullen is an integrative biology major with an English minor.

"As project manager, I will apply skills in paint tech to oversee the job that the workers will do at a specific house or other job site," Mullen said. "This will include knowing the dimensions of the house and how many coats it requires, as well as making sure the painters themselves folks from their late teens to middle age are working efficiently."

"Bill will visit work sites throughout the day and make sure everything is running smoothly," Harold said, "that we are hitting our time budget goals and addressing any concerns of the clients. I will be doing the same thing. Bill will make my life much easier."

The crews will generally consist of two people, with an average job's projected time of four days. Estimates are free.

"We take care of all exterior house painting needs," Harold said. "We repair failing stucco, caulk cracks, and scrap sand and prime localized paint failures. In terms of woodwork such as dry rot, if the client doesn't wish to spend their time looking for a carpenter, I will take over that responsibility and have one of our sub-contractors come out and estimate the job."

"There are a lot of factors that go into the price," Harold continued, "such as having many colors as opposed to one, as well as the amount of prep work needed. Prep is 60 percent of the job, which is why it is always better to maintain your house rather than let paint start to peel off." (Average price, one story home, moderate prep work ($3,200-$4,300.)
