RED BLUFF >> Five Redding men were cited during a recent California Contractors State License Board sting operation that took place at a Red Bluff commercial building Tuesday.

The sting operation was done with the assistance of the Tehama County District Attorney's Office.

Posing as property owners the State License Board's Statewide Investigative Fraud Team called a list of potential suspects to find out whether they were interested in bidding on projects that included painting, drywall, concrete, landscaping and tile work.

Most of the contacts were found through ads posted on craigslist.org.

"Our SWIFT teams conduct stings throughout the state each week to catch unlicensed, uninsured operators (to keep them) from taking advantage of property owners," Registrar Steve Sands said. "Homeowners should never use unlicensed people for their projects these individuals have not passed trade or business examinations, nor undergone a criminal background check."

A state contractor's license is required for work that totals more than $500.

Bids at the sting ranged from $2,000 to $6,500, violating the project limit of $500 in combined labor and material costs.

Steven Cole Pine, Devin Patrick Morrissey, Clifford Jay Markhart, Andrew James Frasure and Jose Pedro Pascual were each cited with a misdemeanor charge of contracting without a license.

State law requires contractors to place their license number in all print, broadcast and online advertisements. Contractors without a license can advertise for jobs valued at less than $500, but their advertisement must state that they are not a licensed contractor.

Oswego's Ogden Falls water tower painting set - August 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The water tower in Oswego's Ogden Falls Subdivision will receive a fresh coat of paint as a result of action taken this past week by the village board.

As part of their consent agenda during a meeting Aug. 12, the board awarded a contract totaling $371,000 to Seven Brothers Painting, Inc. of Shelby Township, Michigan.

In a memo to the board, Jerry Weaver, the village's utility services director, noted that the current exterior paint on the tower is in poor condition and has "faded extensively and there are spot coating failures on the base cone and sidewalls."

Seven Brothers submitted the lowest of four bids received for the project, Jennifer Hughes, the village's director of public works told the board.

The 1.5 million gallon capacity water tower was constructed along the east side of Ogden Falls Boulevard about one-quarter mile south of the U.S. Route 34 and U.S. Route 30 intersection in 1998.

In his memo, Weaver noted that Seven Brothers' bid came in $88,900 lower than the village engineer's pre-bid estimate for the project.

In addition, board members noted the bid is significantly under the $800,000 line item previously designated in the village's current budget for the project.

Hughes said $800,000 was previously designated in the budget for the project because it was believed the contractor might have to install a containment curtain around the tower as it is being painted.

The curtain, she would, would cost about $200,000.

But Hughes said engineers for the village determined the tower does not need to be sandblasted and contractors can paint the tower with rollers instead of using spray paint.

Bungling workmen spell 'bus' wrong in huge yellow road markings - August 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Bungling workmen were left red-faced after painting 'Bup Stop' in the road to mark out a new bus stop.

Confused bus drivers and passengers had to look twice after the Bristol City Council workers misspelt the sign on the road surface in large yellow lettering.

The gaffe, which uses the stencilled letter P instead of an S, appeared last week as part of road repairs in the centre of the city.

The council was today unavailable for comment about the error involving the bus stop markings, which were painted in the busy Old Market area close to the city centre.

But Peter Mann, the service director for transport, said: "It is important that we carry out these improvements as soon as possible to maintain road safety for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians."

It isn't the first time Bristol City Council workers have needed a spelling lesson though.

Four years ago contractors painted a 'keep school clear' sign outside Our Lady of the Rosary Roman Catholic Primary School in Lawrence Weston.

Unfortunately on one side of the road 'school' was spelled without the letter 'C'.
