The Village of Montgomery's ten year-old water tower in the Fairfield Way Subdivision on the village's far west side should soon have a "like new" appearance as a result of action taken this past week by the village board.

The board voted unanimously Sept. 22 to award a contract totaling $23,700 to H2O Towers, LLC of Saline, Mich., to power wash the tower at the southwest corner of Fairfield Way and Gordon Road, and a ground storage tank located adjacent to the village's public work facility on Knell Road, just west of Ill. Route 31.

H2O Towers submitted the lowest of four bids for the project received by the village.

Mike Pubentz, the village's public works director, told the board funds for the project were previously designated in the village's current fiscal year budget.

Pubentz said the power wash will serve to remove mildew from the exterior of the tower and storage tank.

"If you look at the underside of our towers you'll notice that they get mildew because the exterior is generally damp quite a bit of the time," he said.

When questioned by Village President Matt Brolley, Pubentz said the public works department would notify homeowners adjoining the Fairfield Way tower prior to the start of the project.

"We will," Pubentz said. "Generally our towers aren't as close to home as this. But it is our plan to notify the residents next door to give them some sort of idea of what the process is involved, any materials we're using and any precautions they need to take-which we are investigating," he said.

Pubentz said contractors will use what he described as a "lightly chlorinated solution" to wash the towers.

"We don't feel there is any threat to health or home with the product they will be using," he said.

A little more than a month after Nicholas Dillon was injured when a chimney collapsed on him during the 6.0-magnitude earthquake, the New Technology High School freshman continues to recuperate at home.

And he will not have to see the damaged chimney again.

On Saturday, a group of contractors volunteered time, labor and supplies, came to his familys residence in southwest Napa and removed what was left of the chimney, rebuilding a wall with plywood and sheetrock.

We are very thankful, said Nicholas mom, Catalina Dillon, as she, her parents, Gelacio and Socorro Rosales and her sister, Carmen Rosales, served the crew a homemade lunch of carne asada with guacamole, rice and beans, on tables set up in the backyard. This is kind of a celebration of life, Dillon added.

On Aug. 24, Dillon rushed in the dark to her son after the tremors stopped, as Nicholas or Nick, laid helpless in the family living room, where he and a friend had fallen asleep for a sleepover, he on the floor, his friend on the couch. His friend, Imanol Villanueva, was not injured.

He was flown from Queen of the Valley Medical Center by helicopter to U.C. Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, where doctors inserted two bolts and half-a-dozen screws to repair his broken pelvis. After a short stay at Kaiser Permanente Roseville, Nicholas came to the home he shares with his mom, his grandparents and a younger brother. He is still unable to walk and faces another surgery in December.

Still, Nicholas and his family has been uplifted with the outpouring amount of support they have received from the everyone. I never realized how the community can come together so quickly, said Nicholas, as construction workers removed the last of the bricks Saturday. It gives you this feeling in the heart that warms you.

Eamon Griffin, president of Griffin Molinari Building Construction Inc. of Yountville, made arrangements with other contractors to remove the chimney at no charge. He did so after he saw a photograph of the damaged chimney in the Napa Valley Register about two weeks after the earthquake.

That really disturbed me, said Griffin. We kind of knew that they really needed help, he said. The broken bricks were still there. It looked ominous to me, threatening, Griffin said.

The companies involved also included Zerba Construction, Spinnaker Electric Inc., Napa Valley Drywall Co., Borges Masonry and Napco Painting Contractors Inc.

A newly-installed parking meter has been vandalised in St Paul's as the campaign against George Ferguson's residents' parking zonessteps up a gear.

Residents barricaded Morgan Street last week stopping council contractors painting new permit bays as part of the latest stage of parking changes sweeping the city.

Paint was then thrown on double yellow lines inWinkworth Place days later.And last night pictures began circulating of a new meter covered in white paint on the corner ofAshley Road and Dalrymple Road.

St Paul's is the 10th of15 zones being rolled outacross the city.

Protests have taken place across the city in opposition to the schemes but the council plans to complete its roll-out by August 2015.

Alyson Ayland, a spokeswoman for the council, said:We have not had anything reported to us but our engineers will go and look for this meter and put right the damage.

It's both disappointing and costly when people resort to vandalism. If anyone sees someone vandalising machines or signs we would urge them to contact Parking Services via http://www.bristol.gov.uk

She added that the council may not notify the police if they find it is an isolated incident.

Green Party ward councillor Gus Hoyt, who supports the idea ofRPZs, said he had recieved a complaint about the paint on the street.
