Lighting can set the stage for outdoor fun - January 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Thursday, January 30th, 2014 Issue 05, Volume 18.

NORTH COUNTY The arrival of warmer weather can easily renew a homeowners vigor for various home improvement projects, and many have grand plans for interior and exterior renovations as they prep their living spaces for comfort, beauty and entertaining opportunities. While there are many worthy projects to pursue, adding outdoor lighting to a home can help increase its value and make the home safer and more attractive in the evening hours.

According to the American Lighting Association (ALA), with a few updates to outside lighting, families can make even better use of their homes at night. Adding outdoor lighting is easier and less expensive than many homeowners may know, allowing them to transform an existing patio, deck or pool area into an enjoyable nighttime retreat. Pool parties, dinners on the patio or barbecues with neighbors become even more memorable when outdoor lighting is added or improved. But homeowners who want to install or upgrade their outdoor lighting should consider the following tips, courtesy of ALA.

Improve navigation. Lighting is typically layered into a room or outdoor space in three ways: overhead, task and ambient. Even outdoors, where there are no typical boundaries and borders, those three layers are necessary. Outdoor overhead lighting should improve visibility on steps, paths and walking surfaces, especially where theres a bend or an intersection. Task lighting can be used around cooking orgardening areas. Ambient light will cast a comforting glow around any outdoor space.

Enhance security. To improve visibility and security, combine a motion detector with a sconce to illuminate dark corners or entryways. Be sure to aim lights away from the door to improve visibility. Lanterns on either side of the door can give a home a warm, welcoming appearance and improve the safety of entryways.

Create outdoor rooms. Advertisement [ Christ the King Lutheran Church ] Outdoor lighting at the borders of a space is a great way to create barriers, both vertically and horizontally. Lights in a tree create something akin to a chandelier hung in the middle of the sky, and even accent lights in the general area of the edge of a patio, deck or porch will shine across the space and provide enough of a comfort level for people to understand where things are.

Reduce glare. Outdoor lighting that casts a glare can be blinding, as can light thats too bright. Lighting along paths should be cast downward, with fixtures that are hooded. A variety of lighting options will create layers, allowing the homeowner to add or subtract as necessary. Exterior-safe dimmers also can provide flexible control over the level of light, as can movable fixtures added to a patio or porch.

Add decorative elements. Just as arbors, pergolas, patios and other outdoor elements help to enhance the style of an outdoor space, so, too, can lighting contribute to a well-designed landscape. Lighting should play up decorative features of a yard and add the ambience that homeowners desire. Step lights make passage safe while also highlighting molding or trim details. An outdoor chandelier can make for a wonderful accent during dinnertime on the deck or under a pergola. Patio lights provide atmosphere as well as illumination for cooking outside.

Enhance views from inside. Outdoor lighting can make the view from inside pleasant and enjoyable. Use a variety of lights, including spotlights on trees, lights dotted along pathways and accent lights on unique landscape features, to create an idyllic landscape visible from inside the home.

Outdoor lighting enhances functionality of yards and landscapes while making such areas safer for homeowners and their guests once the sun has gone down.

LED Waves’ Outdoor LED Wall Packs Surpasses DesignLights Consortium Specifications - January 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Brooklyn, New York (PRWEB) January 27, 2014

Last month, LED Waves published the UL Photometric Outdoor Test Reports, LM-79 with Integrating Sphere and IES files for the Owl Outdoor LED Wall Pack, their new line of LED flood lights made in the USA. With six different brightness levels spanning from 10 to 200 Watt units, specifiers from all corners of the lighting market had been eagerly anticipating the arrival of this data.

Due to the Owl Packs classification as an outdoor wall pack, it currently does not conform to any product categories under Energy Star or DesignLights Consortium. Energy Star applies to green products typically for the home and for retail and hospitality settings, while the DLC incentivizes larger, more industrial lighting projects. Since the Owl Outdoor LED Wall Pack is used in a wide scope of applications ranging from residential, commercial, industrial and even transportation; it shall be considered for whichever program first recognizes outdoor LED wall packs.

However, new analysis of the Owl Pack test reports show that the lighting performance of each unit meets - and, in most cases, far exceeds the technical specifications for outdoor luminaires qualified for these programs. These specifications include provisions for brightness (measured in lumen output), luminaire efficacy (measured in lumens per Watt), and qualities of light including Correlated Color Temperature (i.e. the light color measured in Kelvin) and Color Rendering Index (a scale up to 100).

LED Waves has posted on their blog a table comparing the performance of each Owl Pack to related categories of DLC-qualified outdoor luminaires. Based on the UL Photometric Outdoor Test Reports, LM-79 with Integrating Sphere and IES files; this resource is intended to help specifiers seeking energy saving rebates for outdoor LED flood lights based on performance rather than a third party designation.

Since the Owl Pack is designed and built onsite at LED Waves headquarters in Brooklyn, it also qualifies for building contracts with provisions for buying American-made products. For help determining the eligibility of your home or business for rebates with the Owl Outdoor LED Wall Pack or other LED lighting products, call 1(800)986-0169.

LED Lighting from www.ledtronics.com Improves Sustainability, Reduces Light Pollution - January 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Torrance, Calif. Today, the LED lighting experts at LEDtronics, Inc., http://www.LEDtronics.com, announced that their LED Cobraheads Streetlight Fixtures helped NRG reduce energy consumption by over 72% and decrease light pollution in the local area.

LED Lights Reduce Energy Consumption by over 72%.

When the NRG power plant in El Segundo, Calif., was redesigned, two towers were demolished which caused extensive light from the plant to bother local neighbors. In an effort to get rid of this light pollution and update old, lighting fixtures at the same time, NRG turned to LEDtronics, Inc. for assistance.

"We faced an unexpected challenge when a large amount of new light was pouring into the homes of local residents after our demolition process," states Jason Luehsenhop, Morrow-Meadows Corporation Senior Project Manager for the NRG LED lighting updates. "LEDtronics supplied us with street lights that reduced the light pollution immediately. In addition, we reduced energy consumption when our old lights that consumed 300 watts were replaced with these energy-efficient LEDs using only 82 watts."

LED streetlights eliminate the unwanted glare, light trespass, energy waste, and sky glow that accompany traditional, incandescent street lamps.

"An estimated 30% of outdoor light generated in the U.S. goes into space, flooding the skies and creating electric haze that reduces stargazing," states Mark Jarel, LEDtronics' Street and Outdoor Lighting Produces Sales Manager. "LED streetlights shine light in the direction where it is needed, at ground level, reducing the amount of light that is lost to the sky and improving overall nighttime viewing, making them dark sky friendly."

With this in mind, LEDtronics, the pioneers of solid-state, LED lighting design and manufacturing in the United States, provided NRG with eco-friendly, RoHS compliant, LED Street Lights (Cobrahead, Full Cutoff), Style M400 part number SLL002P-72X2W-XPW-004 fixtures.

With low power usage of only 82 watts, these solid-state LED lights:

Omit pure, white light with low, ultraviolet emissions that do not attract insects; Offer a long life span with white LED lumen maintenance greater than 70% at 50,000 hours of operation (rated average life based on engineering testing and probability analysis); and Turn on instantly, have solid, die-cast construction, are high-shock and vibration resistant, and more.

"Over 58 LED Cobrahead Street light fixtures were installed on the perimeter of the NRG facility, and more will be added as the ongoing redesign continues," states Jarel. "By updating their old street lights with Long Life, Energy Saving LED Street Lights, we are helping NRG significantly reduce energy consumption, maintenance costs and light pollution while increasing sustainability and providing a safe and attractive facility for workers and the local community."

Environmental group takes dim view of Emanuel’s night light plan - January 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Renderings provided by the city show concepts of the lighting project along the river and "what may be possible out of the international competition".

Mayor Rahm Emanuel was ridiculed Friday for suggesting that Chicago be turned into North Americas city of lights at the same time that Paris, the global City of Light, has toned it down.

Last year, the French Environment Ministry ordered Paris buildings and storefronts to turn off artificial lights between the hours of 1 a.m. and 7 a.m.

The environmental edict did not affect the Eiffel Tower and other major landmarks.

Drew Carhart of the Illinois Coalition for Responsible Outdoor Lighting said that makes Emanuels plan particularly ill-timed.

Its somewhat ironic that the mayor wants to turn Chicago into the Paris of North America when the Paris of France has finally figured out that creating lots of extra light to dump into the night is both wasteful of money and energy and really bad for the environment, Carhart wrote in an email to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Carhart bemoaned the use of electric lighting as a toy.Niagara Falls in daytime? Boring. We can make it look like a Disney movie at night with colored spotlights. The pyramids of Giza? You dont want to see them with the stars wheeling overhead, [but] lit up with multi-color glare and lasers, he wrote.

Syracuse, NY (PRWEB) January 23, 2014

Carlton Management, LLC, a multi-family residential and commercial property management firm in Central New York, recently completed exterior LED lighting upgrades at 22 of its properties. The upgrades, completed by SmartWatt Energy via the National Grid Small Business Services Program, have reduced Carlton Managements monthly energy costs by more than $5,000.

We have completed lighting upgrades at 22 of our properties through the National Grid Small Business Services Program because we saw the energy savings, said Marke Lantry, Property Manager for Carlton Management. It was a no brainer.

After conducting a complimentary energy analysis of all outdoor lighting, SmartWatt proposed a plan to replace the existing inefficient exterior parking lot, building, and canopy lighting systems with energy-efficient LED lighting fixtures. These upgrades came with a National Grid rebate of $141,932 and, according to National Grid, are expected to pay for themselves in approximately 23 months.

Additionally, Carlton Management has referred 18 of its tenants to complete interior lighting upgrades at their facilities through the National Grid Small Business Services Program. One tenant, Mother Nature Pet Supply, completed interior T-12 to T-8 fluorescent lighting upgrades at its retail store in Manlius, NY. The upgrades are expected to save $122 per month in energy costs and came with a National Grid rebate of $2,143.

The lighting upgrades have made a huge difference in our store, said Carla DellContrada, Owner of Mother Nature Pet Supply. The new lights are at least three times brighter.

SmartWatt is the administrator and implementation contractor for National Grid's Small Business Services Program in Upstate New York. The National Grid Small Business Services Program helps businesses with an average peak demand of 100 kW or less per month conduct energy-efficient upgrade measures.
