Philips Hue Smart Plug review: Just the basics, except for the price tag – TechHive - December 5, 2019 by Mr HomeBuilder

As a smart home pioneer, Signifys Philips Hue brand is well known for its smart light bulbs, switches, sensors, and even complete indoor and outdoor lighting fixtures, most of which rely on its $60 Zigbee-to-Wi-Fi bridge. More recently the company has added a new line of devices that give you the option of bridge-free control, via Bluetooth. Thats where the Philips Hue Smart Plug fits into the mix.

The Philips Hue Smart Plug looks nearly identical to many other commonly available smart plugs, its a wide, squat, single-outlet device that fits neatly into a single socket on your wall outlet. Its just barely wider than the wall plate, and its short enough that it doesnt block the second socket from being used.

If youre not planning to make a deeper investment into the Hue ecosystem, you can save the $60 youd spend on the bridge and control this smart plug with just your smartphone or tablet, using Bluetooth. But this approach limits you to just 10 Bluetooth-compatible Hue devices of any type.

The Philips Hue Smart Plug is anonymous looking apart for a sticker on top indicating its maximum supported wattage.

If your smart lighting needs are that simple, there are many, many less-expensive ways to meet them. Our top pick in this category, Levitons Decora DW15P, costs about $25 and connects to your Wi-Fi networkno bridge required. The same goes for our runner-up pick, the Currant WiFi Smart Outlet, which costs the same as this Hue device, but can control two devices independently (and theres aBluetooth version of the Currant that costs $25).

Besides, the Philips Hue Smart Plug gets its real smarts from its interaction with the Hue Bridge, which connects your Hue devices to your Wi-Fi network. With the Bridge (and only with the Bridge) you can control multiple devices in your home at once, use Alexa and Google Assistant. Using the Bridge is also the only way that you control devices when youre out of the house.

Heres the catch, though: The Hue mobile app has been designed and refined exclusively to control lights, and its overall approach doesnt always translate perfectly to the smart plugs. The Philips Hue system has a robust set of routines built in: You can have lights turn on or off automatically when you wake up or go to sleep, control bulbs to turn on when you come home, and set up timers and schedules. The Hue app doesnt always know what to do with the plug, though, and users might be confused that Hues catch-all group is still all lights, not all devices.

I eventually figured out the necessary syntax to get the Hue app working most of the time with the Smart Plug, but timers that instruct devices to blink lights never worked (even if you have a lamp plugged into it).

Timers can be finicky to configure properly.

The Hue Smart Plug is also short on features such as energy monitoring or a usage history log. As well, setting up geofencing so you can control the plug automatically when you come and go requires jumping through numerous hoops on the Hue website (outside of the app), although after I got it working, this ended up working fine in my testing.

And now for the kicker: With a list price of $40, you will have trouble finding a more expensive, less capable smart plug on the marketand thats not even considering the price of the Hue Bridge. If youre already a devotee to the Hue ecosystem, you probably already have a bridge, and the Hue Smart Plugs price tag might not even phase you.

If you do object to the pricing, and you have a smart speaker (like an Amazon Echo or Google Home), that device can be an equalizereffectively erasing the boundaries between brands and technologies. You will, however, need to deal with disparate apps, at least during set up. And if youre just getting started on your smart home journey youll find plenty of more capable and more affordable options on the market.

Philips Hue Smart Plug review: Just the basics, except for the price tag - TechHive

In Alaska, dark winters are a constant. That’s all the more reason to string lights. – Anchorage Daily News - December 5, 2019 by Mr HomeBuilder

Global warming is resulting in lots of variables here in Alaska, but there is one constant: Our days will always get really short during the winter months. Lately, I find myself wondering what Alaskans will do as winters get warmer. It wont be warm enough to garden (at least for a while) of course, but what happens when we cant get on our skis, ice skates, sleds and snowmachines? What do we do with darkness when there is no snow?

There is only one answer: We go to lights. Anchorage did it once before back in the late 70s and early 80s. We loaded trees and shrubbery with strings of those tiny, white lights you still see around. In fact, the story goes we bought more strings of those lights than any other place on earth. I believe it.

The program ran into politics with rival mayors, but I say politics be damned. Today there are all manner of string lights that are very different from those we Anchorage old-timers put up during that City of Lights campaign. After all, that was more than a quarter century ago. There were no cellphones, few computers and LED technology was just coming into its own.

If you have not visited a hardware store or box store lighting department in a while, do check some out. You will still find the 2-foot rolls of string lights, but there are much more. How about a string of icicles or even meteors? No electricity? There are battery-powered strings of light. Others are solar powered.

There are all manner of colored LEDs, of course. And some of these are put inside all sorts of objects ranging from those with holiday themes like reindeer and Santas, to more personal themes such as hearts, hot peppers and worse. Some of these lights come on net arrays for some pretty impressive, but easy to construct, backyard displays.

You can now buy 150-foot rolls LED rope light, with the lights inside a plastic tube (which makes them so easy to put up and, more important, take down and store). And, if you dont want to get into the hanging lights thing, you can now buy gadgets that project points of light onto your plants or house, trees and lawn.

To get an idea of what I mean as to the new kinds of lights, you should head to the internet. Check out string lights and outdoor lights. There is no reason to buy online as anything you could possibly use is for sale right here, locally. Oh, and, we have the darkness for free.

It is important to be safe when stringing lights as you are dealing with electricity (and perhaps a ladder). No sense harming yourself. It is just as critical that lights dont harm the plants used to support them. This starts with how they are attached. They have be secure enough so they dont rub against bark, yet not so tight as to harm the limbs. Moreover, you really must give pre-hanging consideration to how you are going remove them so the plant doesnt get damaged as it thickens during spring and summer growth.

Finally, why not check out the lighting displays at the Alaska Botanical Garden anytime from 5 to 8 p.m., Wednesdays through Saturdays, Nov. 30, through Jan. 11 (with the exception of Dec. 25. and Jan. 1). There, you will not only find wonderful light displays, but live music, bonfires, vendors, model trains and a warm drink in an ABG mug (or bring your own). Welcome to global warming, it is our turn now. Check out the schedule of special events at alaskabg.org.

    Jeffs Alaska garden calendar

Christmas trees: They are for sale. They must be in water, especially if you are buying early.

Poinsettias: They are back. Make sure you dont put yours where there is a draft as this will cause them to drop leaves. Soil should be slightly moist

Free mid-winter lunchtime garden talks: The Alaska Botanical Garden is putting on a week of garden talks Dec. 16-20. All talks start at 12:30 p.m. and are held at the botanical gardens greenhouse. Oh, bring your lunch. Go to alaskabg.org for topics.

Jeff thinks autoflowering cannabis is the next tomato: Check out his new book DIY Autoflowering Cannabis on Amazon.

Holiday Lighting Safety Tips Will Save Money And Add Sparkle – Nashua, NH Patch - December 5, 2019 by Mr HomeBuilder

MANCHESTER, NH Now that Thanksgiving is over, more and more homes and neighborhoods across the Granite State will begin to look festive with Christmas and other holiday lighting displays, both in and outside of home. Eversource, the state's largest utility company, is reminding customers that there are ways consumers can save money, conserve energy and ensure a safe home while also celebrating the twinkles and sparkles of the holidays. Just utilizing one of these tips, like swapping out traditional incandescent lights with more efficient LED lights, can save a lot of money and energy.

"Before putting up holiday decorations, it's important to inspect them to ensure they're not broken or damaged check lighted displays for cracked sockets, frayed wires or loose connections," said Ken Bogler, the vice president of safety at Eversource. "When decorating outside, we remind people to work from a stable surface and to always be aware of any power lines or other hazards that might be nearby."

LED lights use about 80 percent less energy than conventional bulbs. They often last longer, are brighter, and stay cooler.

Also, never run an extension cord under a rug or coil them tightly this can cause them to overheat. A programmable timer will ensure that lights aren't left on accidentally. When displaying lights outside, keep them off the ground water and electricity do not mix. Also, check the labels to ensure that lights for indoor use only are not displayed outside.

Other tips include: Checking lights for dampness and temperature-proof; check extension cords for wear and tear, and plug outdoor lights and decorations into GFCI outlets; use advanced power strips where possible for all holiday lighting to eliminate standby energy loss; turn off room lights when the tree is lit to save energy while creating a festive atmosphere.

Energy Star rebates can also be found here. For more holiday lighting and electrical safety tips, visit eversource.com.

Landscape Lighting | Landscape, Path & Deck Lights | Lumens - September 24, 2019 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Why We Love Landscape Lighting

Landscape lights allow you to continue to enjoy the beauty of your yard even when it's dark out. And it can even make your landscape more dramatic, with well-placed outdoor spotlights and washes casting intriguing shadows and highlighting the best plants, water features with underwater lights and other aspects. While focusing attention on your landscape's most important details, landscape lighting also helps people to safely traverse across it with path lighting and deck lighting guiding the way.

Most outdoor landscape lighting is unobtrusive, designed to discretely illuminate and keep the landscape at the center of attention. As such, landscape lighting fixtures are best hidden within bushes or rock formations and properly oriented to highlight the leaves in a tall tree or wash up a textural wall. Arrange glare-free downlights -- specifically path lighting or deck lighting -- at regular intervals to ensure safe travel along pathways and up and down stairs. Backyard ponds benefit from underwater lights, while in-ground well lights provide an elegant, warm glow. Lastly, use bollard lights in place of pathway lighting anywhere you need extra illumination for safety or direction. With the right selection of fixtures, you'll have no dressing up your landscape to the nines.

Whether your backyard is traditionally styled or boasting with ultra-modern outdoor furniture pieces, you are sure to find an assortment of landscape fixtures that will fit your aesthetic. Hinkley Lighting offers a complete assortment of every kind of fixture you need to decorate your landscape in style. From bollards to recessed wall lights and all of the necessary hardware, Hinkley offers the ideal contemporary solution to landscape lighting. Traditional landscapes find a congruent style in the fixtures from Kichler and Troy Lighting. And if you love the benefits of energy efficiency in your space, look to the selection of fixtures from BEGA. LED landscape lighting is a great way to be eco-friendly and cost effective with your outdoor lighting design.

In addition to the cost savings you'll notice, the use of LED landscape fixtures require very little maintenance on your part. LEDs are rated to last for a very long time, meaning you won't have to change out your landscape lights every summer. Plus, many LED fixtures offer a higher brightness output, which is ideal for outdoor applications.

There are several considerations that go into selecting the right kind of landscape lighting for your front yard, back yard or commercial property. Use these quick tips to help you get it right.

Depending on your application, you'll have a few different options of landscape lights to use including bollards, path lights, in-ground lights, spotlights (great for bushes and shrubbery) and floodlights. Decide where you will plan to use landscape fixtures and the type of light you expect them to provide - uplighting, silhouetting, grazing lighting, wall washing, etc.

Landscape lights are also available in different voltages - 12 volt and 120 volt. You'll need to determine the application of your landscape lighting and make sure you have the right voltage you need. Be mindful of other fixtures in the space too.

Landscape fixtures are offered in a variety of colors and finishes, which allow them to blend into your yard and color choices. Metallic finishes (aluminum, brushed nickel, chrome, titanium) are always popular, while understated white and black finishes offer a minimalist appearance.

Be sure to check the UL rating of the fixtures you are interested in. While all of the landscape lights in this assortment are save to use outdoors, some are available as damp-rated (they are safe to be exposed to water occasionally) and others are wet-rated (they can be exposed to any amount of water without harm).

Lastly, if you live in an area that promotes dark-sky compliance in outdoor lighting, be sure to select fixtures that are specifically rated as dark-sky compliant. These designs are meant to minimize the amount of glow emitted by shielding glare and light trespass.

Any outdoor lighting scheme isn't complete without more decorative lighting -- wall, ceiling, portable and post-mounted fixtures add to the functionality of landscape lighting, as well as to a home's exterior decor. And enjoy grilling on the barbecue with the proper amount of light with a BBQ light from Focus Industries. The line of grill lights from Focus complement outdoor and landscape lighting, while also serving a much needed purpose. Finally, enjoy your landscape lighting into the evening hours with comfortable and stylish outdoor furniture including sofas, lounge chairs and hammocks.

Outdoor Lighting | For Your Business – Georgia Power - September 24, 2019 by Mr HomeBuilder

HID or High-IntensityDischargeis a general term used to designate four different types of lamps commonly used for outdoor lighting: mercury vapor, low-pressure sodium, high-pressure sodium and metal halide. HID lamps require a warm-up period to reach full light output. A momentary loss of power can cause the HID fixture to re-strike and have to warm up again a process that can take up to 15 minutes.

Inductionlighting systems are electrode-less and are very similar to conventional fluorescent lighting systems. Induction lighting systems are composed of an electronic ballast (used to generate a high-frequency electronic current), a lamp or discharge vessel (filled with a mixture of gases, including mercury), and a power coupler (an induction coil to convert the high-frequency electronic current into a magnetic field within the discharge vessel). Induction outdoor lighting systems are energy-efficient when compared to mercury vapor, but not when compared to HPS, and provide white light with good color rendering (80+ CRI), quick ignition and re-ignition, and a rated life of up to 100,000 hours. Photometric performance does not compare well to HPS for outdoor lighting applications.

LED or Light-Emitting Diodetechnology is rapidly becoming competitive with high-intensity discharge light sources for outdoor lighting applications.Well-designed LED outdoor lighting luminaires can provide the required surface illuminance using less energy and with improved uniformity compared to HID light sources. LED luminaires may also have significantly longer life (50,000 hours or more) with better lumen maintenance. Other advantages of LED include that they contain no mercury, lead or other known disposal hazards and they come on instantly without a warm-up or re-strike delay. LED technology is improving rapidly in areas of efficacy, color quality, optical design, heat management and cost, and is compatible with dimming and controls systems.

LEP or Light-Emitting Plasmatechnology is an emerging light source and a possible choice for high-lumen outdoor lighting applications. The LEP system consists of an emitter, driver and power supply.LEP is a category of solid-state lighting but is not an LED. With LEP, a solid-state device is used to generate radio frequency energy which powers a plasma light source (quartz capsule embedded in a ceramic puck). Light emitting plasma technology promises high-lumen output, good color rendering, long life, energy efficiency, reduced maintenance requirements, and compatibility with dimming and controls systems.

15 Different Outdoor Lighting Ideas for Your Home (All Types) - September 24, 2019 by Mr HomeBuilder

Comprehensive outdoor lighting ideas guide setting out the 15 types of outdoor lighting options you have. We cover it all.- Advertisement -

Between outdoor furniture, gardening accessories and other types of exterior decor, its easy to have a stylish and presentable yard, especially in the spring and summer months.

The front and back of your home are equally important, being that the front is the first thing seen and the back is where people tend to gather.

Just like decorations, lighting is significant as well. Implementing lights may sound obvious, but it seems as though many homeowners use them for one function only, light. While this is the most important function, they can be used for decoration at the same time. Dont just illuminate your yard to see, illuminate it for style.

Welcome yourself home with beautiful front door lighting options. Since its most likely the main entryway, these lights will not go unnoticed. Depending on the style of your home or the type of front entryway you have, there are different ways to go about choosing the most fitting option. This includes style, size and placement.

Whether you choose to hang lights, mount them to the siding or both, its important to choose a style that best suits you and the home. Although having proper outdoor lighting plays a significant role in safety, dont let that be your only consideration. This is the time to be creative.

Hanging lights, such as lanterns and pendants, are ideal for tall entryways and porches. Without a hanging fixture, the space may look too empty.

Another idea is mounting the fixture on some kind of post. These are often referred to as pier mount lights, because theyre created for piers and columns. This light fixture makes the stone or brick pier stand out, potentially making it the accent piece of the yard.

Piers arent only placed near the front door, they can be placed in the walkway leading up to the front door, as well as the driveway. An illuminated walkway has the power to create a serene experience when walking towards the door.

Front door with hanging light (centered).

Front door with lights flanking both sides of the door.

Along with driveway lighting, garage lighting can make an impact as well. To illuminate the garage, add flood lights. Flood lights are typically placed higher up, which makes it acceptable to line them up with the highest point of the garage. These lights can highlight an attractive garage or help to light up the outdoor basketball court.

Garage door with recessed or pot lighting illuminating the garage door.

    Garage with sensor-lights.

Garage illumined with interior lighting through the garage door windows.

Luminescent garage doors emitting light. I love this effect.

Check out more garage designs here.

Enhance your landscape with post lantern lights, path lights and well lights. Even during the day, when theyre not yet lit up, they add that something extra and bring attention to the green grass and/or garden. These lights bring curb appeal to the front yard and sophisticated style in the back.

With landscape lighting, you can enjoy the garden late into the evening, especially if you spend a great deal of time outside or host gatherings in the yard.

Adding lighting beyond the typical one or two lights can provide extra security as well, especially if theyre motion sensored or automatically light up when the sun goes down.

Lighting can make time spent on the porch more enjoyable. For those cloudy days youd like to spend outside or a beautiful summer night, let porch lighting provide the brightness that the sky lacks. One of the best options is an outdoor fan light, ideal for both cooling down and brightening the porch space.

Lighting has more of an impact than you may think. Its no longer just a safety element, its a decorative element. With different styles, sizes, colors, and placements, lighting fixtures have the ability to make a difference in the homes appearance.

    Pot lights on backyard porch/deck.

    Porch with fan light.

You have many options to illuminate your deck including lamp posts, lanterns attached to your home, hanging lanterns, string lighting, fire pits, candles, tiki torches, surrounding garden lights and more.

If you have a walkway from the street/driveway to your front door, its a good idea to illuminate it.

Fortunately you have many options including low-to-the-ground lights and/or light posts.

Fabulous lights built into concrete walls lining front walk steps to the front door.

One of the most beautiful effects you can create in your yard is lighting for a pool. I think a lit pool looks fabulous.

You have many options including lights beneath the water, on the surrounding deck and/or elevated posts.

I think a tremendous touch is to add lights in several places on your home exterior so that it lights up like a Christmas tree. Check out these examples surely you agree they make the home look fabulous at night.

There are two main placement options for outdoor step lighting. They are:

    Below are examples of both.

This showcases outdoor steps with lights on the risers.

Another location for outdoor lighting is on a railing. Heres an example.

One final outdoor lighting consideration is illuminating your address whether the address is on your home, a post or on a mailbox. Its very helpful that people be able to see and read your address at night. This lighting is often forgotten.

There are many types of outdoor hanging lights including the following:

We have a dedicated article showcasing and explaining all the different types of hanging lights here.

Wall lighting outside is very popular and as a result there are many options to choose from.

For this reason we published an extensive article explaining and showing 19 types of outdoor wall lights here.

In addition to hanging lights (of which many technically fall under the ceiling lights category, there are two others you should be aware of. They are:

Recessed: Outdoor recessed lights are just like those used inside. Theyre only possible with covered outdoor areas. Heres an example:

Flush-mount: The flush mount light sits flush against the ceiling but the lighting fixtures drops down.

Semi-flush mount: The outdoor semi-flush mount light attaches directly to the ceiling and then expands below (i.e. fans out).

Eye-Catching Light Mark Parameters Mix Styles

Using different styles of path lights in the same scheme can help you avoid the good little soldier look. Be sure to clean the lamp surfaces and check for burned-out bulbs at least once a year, and relocate the stakes if plant growth has blocked their light output.

Path lighting is something that is rarely done well. Whether you opt for inexpensive stakes or pricier fixtures, placement is critical. Think of them as gentle hints for where to go next, not outlining tools or runway lights for an airplane landing. Fewer is usually better.

Path lights are visual aids in a dark space, but they also add color and texture if you place them near interesting plants. This way, you can retain pieces of your gardens charm long after the sun sets.

Seating areas benefit from moon lighting or lighting installed high overhead because there are no harsh bulbs at eye level and it creates a cozy, intimate feel. No one likes to feel as if theyre on stage when theyre sitting outside, says MacMorris.

Candlelight is at the other end of the spectrum from moonlight compared to the cooler 5500 kelvins, yellow has 2000 kelvins. That means in combination with overhead moon lighting, warm tabletop candles really pop.

If you dont have tall trees, you may have to get creative to achieve moon lighting. This outdoor fireplace is spotlighted from a three-and-a-half story eave. The pergola in the background is lit brightly because its viewed from the house most of the time; however, it can be made more inviting with a dimmer switch.

The hardscaping in this outdoor kitchen is lit with outdoor LED tape, which is a flexible strand of LEDs encased in silicone and designed to keep moisture out. Although the back is adhesive, the tape requires support from clips to stay in place. You need some electrical experience if you want to install this yourself.

This scene is lit with the entire view in mind, not just the water feature. Uplit trees across the viewing area provide balance; the designer used more lumen intensity and a wider lamp spread on the tree in the middle, which is the focal point. A bonus tip for lighting evergreens: Using a blue lens intensifies their green color.

Balance is important when youre lighting a homes exterior. Lighting only the house can look unnatural even bleak but uplit trees and statuary add depth and softness.

Shadow can be just as interesting as light. The spotlights on the front of this house were placed very close to the foundation so that the light would catch the edges of the beautiful stonework and create an intricate shadow pattern. To avoid a dead dark spot at the peak of the roof, the designer placed one spotlight on a stem in the flower bed (at left) that sends light all the way to the top.
