When it comes to lighting, consumers have hundreds if not thousands of choices. While many of these lights use traditional incandescent bulbs, the use of LEDs and compact fluorescent bulbs are becoming standard practice. Price can run from $10 to hundreds. Style can vary from rustic to over-the-top contemporary.
Outdoor lighting is not that much different than interior lighting. The main difference lies in the weatherproof nature of the lights housing or its configuration. Another element in outdoor lighting is the use of low-voltage lights. Compared to line voltage lights, low-voltage light systems are often installed by the homeowner, which can be a great cost benefit to hiring and bringing in a full fledged electrical contractor.
Types of Low-Voltage Outdoor Lights
Area lights: These lights illuminate larger areas, like a front porch.
Spot lighting: Got a really cool sculpture or exotic plant in your yard? Spot lighting can bring it to life.
Flood lighting: This is the big brother to the spot light. Flood lights can wash entire walls or groups of plants and other garden features.
Step lighting: Nothing will wake someone up quicker than a tumble down a few stairs. Aside from spilling your evening beveragebumps and bruises are never any fun.
In years past nearly every one of these low voltage lights would have be supplied with a heat generating, inefficient incandescent bulb. Today many of these are equipped with compact florescent or LED technology.

New LED lighting along Maines Interstate 295 will improve roadway lighting and reduce energy costs.
ATLANTA The Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT) selected Holophane HMAO LED high mast outdoor lighting fixtures from Acuity Brands, Inc. (NYSE: AYI) to retrofit 105 light towers that illuminate Interstate 295. The new HMAO LED high mast solution provides two distinct benefits for the MaineDOT: evenly distributed white light for enhanced illumination and greater energy efficiency compared to the previous lighting technology.
HMAO LED high masts use only 290-watts per fixture, and are rated to deliver up to 100,000 hours of maintenance-free operation. They feature multiple LED modules that reduce the potential for dark areas in the event an LED module fails. Through use of multiple LED drivers, HMAO LED high masts offer the choice of various lumen packages, provide a back-up light source and overlapping distribution. Additionally, prismatic glass optics minimize the direct view of the light source for quality illumination.
Our main goal is to provide a safe transportation system for the state of Maine, said Ron Cote, MaineDOT Electrical Supervisor. We were looking for a light source that would provide lower maintenance and a whiter light. The benefits of multiple LED drivers and modules and the longevity of Holophane HMAO LED fixtures are exactly what we wanted. Additionally, the quality of light combined with the payback of these fixtures is absolutely incredible."
The states previous high-pressure sodium light fixtures were turned off each night from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. in order to reduce operating costs, which left roads and rest areas dark during that time period. In addition, the previous fixtures left bright spots and glare on the road due to uneven light distribution.
Electricity cost for each newly retrofitted light tower, operating from dusk to dawn each day, is only $66 per month, compared to $200 per month for each tower using the previous fixtures and operating a reduced number of hours. The reduction in energy cost allows MaineDOT to leave the lights on throughout the night, providing a safer transit environment. Once the retrofit project is completed, the HMAO LED high masts are expected to produce an annual energy savings for the MaineDOT of $135,000, or a 10-year energy savings of approximately $1.35 million.
Light towers in the Falmouth area have already been retrofitted with the new HMAO LED high mast luminaires. The MaineDOT will also retrofit light towers in Portland, Saco, Kittery, Waterville, Bangor and Medway rest areas.
More than 40 years ago, Holophane was first to market with innovative, high mast lighting systems, said Rob Drago, Acuity Brands Lighting Vice President, Infrastructure. As an established leader in the industry, we continue to advance the technology, creating a best in class product that provides the features and benefits of a true high mast luminaire.

The Lighting Research Center (LRC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute will hold three Institutes this Fall for industry professionals. The Institutes will be held at the LRC in Troy, New York.
Newswise LED Lighting Institute: September 10-12, 2013 http://www.lrc.rpi.edu/education/outreachEducation/InHouseInstitute.asp The LED Lighting Institute is a 3-day, hands-on seminar that teaches industry professionals how to incorporate light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) into lighting applications. The workshop includes new content on OLEDs and more time for industry professionals to participate in hands-on sessions using LEDs and OLEDs. LRC experts help participants learn about these quickly evolving solid-state lighting technologies in a small classroom setting. The program culminates with participants designing, building, and evaluating their own lighting fixtures.
Photometry Institute: October 8-9, 2013 http://www.lrc.rpi.edu/education/outreachEducation/PhotometryInstitute.asp The Photometry Institute is a 2-day, hands-on seminar that teaches industry professionals about the latest developments in photometric testing and evaluation, including new testing requirements for solid-state light sources and systems. Engineers, technicians, testing personnel, product developers and designers from lighting and related companies will come away with the knowledge and skills needed to establish and conduct photometric testing and evaluation of a wide range of lighting products and systems. The Institute is held at the LRCs extensive photometric laboratories, accredited by the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP lab code: 200480-0).
Outdoor Lighting Institute: October 16-17, 2013 http://www.lrc.rpi.edu/education/outreachEducation/OutdoorInstitute.asp The Outdoor Lighting Institute is a 2-day, hands-on seminar that teaches engineers, lighting designers, municipal officials, utility personnel and others how to effectively design, specify, and commission energy-efficient outdoor lighting installations for a variety of sites and locations including streets and roadways, parking areas, parks, and pedestrian areas. The goal of the training program is to provide the knowledge and tools needed to develop outdoor lighting installations that substantially reduce energy use and light pollution while improving safety and security.
About the Lighting Research Center The Lighting Research Center (LRC) is part of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute of Troy, N.Y., and is the leading university-based research center devoted to lighting. The LRC offers the world's premier graduate education in lighting, including one- and two-year master's programs and a Ph.D. program. Since 1988 the LRC has built an international reputation as a reliable source for objective information about lighting technologies, applications, and products. The LRC also provides training programs for government agencies, utilities, contractors, lighting designers, and other lighting professionals.

About the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) On Feb. 13, 2009, Congress passed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 at the urging of President Obama, who signed it into law four days later. A direct response to the economic crisis, the Recovery Act has three immediate goals: create new jobs and save existing ones; spur economic activity and invest in long-term growth; and foster unprecedented levels of accountability and transparency in government spending. The Recovery Act intended to achieve those goals by providing $787 billion in tax cuts and benefits for millions of working families and businesses, funding for entitlement programs such as unemployment benefits, and funding for federal contracts, grants and loans.
