One of the countrys foremost insurance companies, Wapic Insurance Plc, is set to change the landscape of Ikoyi area of Lagos with its modern and environmentally-friendly head office.
The company recently performed the groundbreaking for the planned six-storey green corporate head office building located on Awolowo Road, Ikoyi. The project has a completion time of 18 months.
The groundbreaking had in attendance the Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment, Tunji Bello; Director-General, Nigeria Insurance Association, Mr. Sunday Thomas; and President, Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers, Mr. Ayodapo Shoderu.
Explaining the basis for the investment in a green corporate head office, the acting Managing Director, Wapic Insurance, Mr. Ashish Desai, said, We shall be laying the foundation for an iconic building, which will not only contribute greatly to restoring the beauty of Awolowo Road, but more importantly, we will unveil a structure that was conceived within the tenets of global best practice in green building practices.
Desai stated that new corporate head office had been designed to conserve and efficiently utilise energy, water and other resources with minimal impact on the environment.
In describing the unique features of the building, he offered insights into the design process, affirming that the engineers and designers ensured that the wellbeing of employees as well as visitors to the company was factored into the creative and technical process.
Upon completion, this landmark building will boast of natural cross ventilation and natural lighting to enhance health and minimise energy consumption, he said.
Among other things, the ground floor area will be covered by 30 per cent greenery and each floor thereafter will be equipped with a dedicated green zone.
Desai stressed, Whilst the substance of our primary business is to underwrite risks and indemnify for losses incurred, no compensation can reverse, or indeed, compensate for the loss to our environment.

Wapic goes green with new head office complex
Land and building sales, plus major leases, redevelopments and new construction involving an office building, coffee shop, health clinic and 12-story mixed-use apartment tower were among the 2013 Deal of the Year awards announced recently by the Madison-based Commercial Brokers Group.
The fourth-annual contest, aimed at recognizing the most notable commercial real estate transactions in the Madison area, also serves the broader purpose of helping to take the temperature of the local economy. Signs of improvement included the contest receiving more than twice the number of submissions as a year ago, more than 30. Submitted deals also had larger and longer leases, and more build-to-suit transactions, in which landlords agree to build a new space to the specific requirements of a prospective tenant.
This tells us that companies are more confident making a commitment to growing their business, and they feel Madison is a viable location to do that, said TJ Blitz, past president of the commercial brokers group and managing principal of Cresa Madison.
Contest entries were judged by an independent panel of industry affiliate professionals based on factors including a deals size, dollar volume, difficulty, uniqueness and community contribution.
The winners were:
Office:Lease and redevelopment of 1414 Park St. in Madison for a $1.6 million Meriter Health Services physical therapy clinic, including 10,000 rentable square feet and a 2,600-square-foot building addition.

Retail:Lease of 3,000 square feet in the Tenney Building on Madisons Capitol Square for the Alterra/Colectivo coffee shop.

The office of the Mason County Chapter of the American Red Cross will relocate later this month to allow for renovations of its current space for the local parole and probation office.
Approval was given Thursday by Maysville Board of Commissioners to contract with K&M Gerike Construction in the amount of $47,092 to renovate the space at 101 East Second Street. The building is owned by the city's Public Building Corporation, which rents the space to the Kentucky Department of Corrections, Division of Parole and Probation for $21,000 per year.
The Red Cross office will relocate to Maysville Fire Station No. 2, at Kentucky 9 and Kenton Station Road. City Manager Ray Young said improvements to the existing office space at the fire station should be completed by April 1.
The office building housing the parole and probation office will undergo renovations to restroom facilities for compliance with the American with Disabilities Act. The renovation will add more office space for the staff and is expected to be complete by July 1, Young said.
In other business, commissioners:
-- Awarded a contract to Straight Edge Construction of Brooksville in the amount of $58,860 to replace sidewalks on East Third Street.
Young said the project is being funded by state grant money in the amount of $100,000. The initial phase of the contract will replace sidewalks on the south side of East Third Street from the Cox Building at Market Street to the Maysville Motel at Government Street. Because the contract bid came in at a lower cost, the balance of the grant money will be used to replace sidewalks from Government Street to the Mason County Public Library at a later date.
Work is scheduled to begin as soon as weather conditions improve and should take three to four weeks to complete.
-- Accepted the resignation of Officer Brittani Price from the Maysville Police Department.
-- Approved a resolution marking April 1 as National Service Recognition Day in support of local volunteer groups. Members of RSVP, Foster Grandparents and AmericorpVISTA were in attendance at the meeting and were acknowledged by city officials for their volunteer service.

LOVELAND -- As Ward family members watched their office building burn into the night last July 9, they were thinking one thing: "total loss."
In the weeks that followed the catastrophic fire that brought scores of firefighters from all over the region, they learned that the Ward Building might be salvageable after all.
Now, eight months later, the two-story brick structure looks like what it almost is: a brand-new building.
"It's all coming together nicely," said Dave Ward, one of the four owners of the building at 2114 N. Lincoln Ave. in central Loveland.
The blaze destroyed the roof and heavily damaged other parts of the 10,779-square-foot building. And the thousands of gallons of water that firefighters poured onto the structure caused a different kind of damage.

Ward said the owners' decision to rebuild rather than level the structure allowed them to use two-thirds to three-fourths of the original building, which was constructed in the early 1980s.
"It was the right decision to make," he said.

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Residents in the River Oaks area continue to fight to stop a 17-story office building from going up in their neighborhood.
Construction for the building located at 2229 San Felipe began weeks ago. Neighbors complain the noise pollution at all hours is disruptive and the constant movement of cranes has even caused cracks in nearby patios and on the walls of an adjacent home.
"It's totally inappropriate to the neighborhood it's just kind of rammed down everyone's throat," neighbor Bill Pillsbury said.
Richard Armstrong's house backs into the construction.
"The emissions were very strong and we just all started to feel it after a couple of hours of that," he said.
Armstrong says the smell is causing health issues for his family. Armstrong has filed a complaint with the EPA.
Another group of neighbors has also filed a lawsuit to stop the construction, claiming the building is "abnormal and out of place."
We spoke over the phone to a representative of Hines, the company behind the project. He tells us they are in compliance with all city permits and have put up this plastic to try to keep the fumes from spreading. Hines also claims they have tried to reach out to the homeowner with no luck, and if they are responsible for any damage, they would "make it right."
Hines says construction should be completed by 2015.

Dozens of new building schemes have been completed in Cambridge in the past year - and the News is teaming up with Cambridge City Council, and the Cambridge Forum for the Construction Industry, to give readers the chance to pick the one they like best.
Nearly 30 schemes have been shortlisted in the Cambridge Design and Construction Awards 2013, and we are publishing pictures and brief descriptions of them.
The projects are divided into four categories, and a panel of judges will choose a winner from each - but there is also a Peoples Choice award given to one of the 27 schemes listed.
Look through the pictures and text, choose your favourite project, and vote for it below.

Sheriff's Office Works To Curb Construction Site Thefts
After a series of larcenies of building materials from construction sites, the Loudoun County Sheriffs Office is asking residents to report suspicious activity at construction sites, especially during the evening and overnight, when the thefts tend to occur.
In January and February there were 29 reported larcenies from construction sites, according to the sheriff's office. In these cases, the thieves entered unfinished homes where materials, often high-priced and high-valued, and appliances are often left unsecured. The thieves have targeted tools, building materials and copper.
The Loudoun County Sheriffs Office is working with members of the building and contracting community, and we are asking residents who neighbor constructions sites to report suspicious activity, Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman said. If you see a suspicious person or a vehicle on a construction site after dark or during off-hours, be sure to report it immediately."
Residents should call the Loudoun County Sheriffs Office 24-hour-non-emergency line at 703-777-1021 to report any suspicious activity.

Sheriff's Office Works To Curb Construction Site Thefts
A two-story downtown office building with parking will be auctioned as part of Yellowstone Countys plans to remodel the courthouse.
County commissioners on Tuesday adopted a resolution to sell on April 1 the brick building at 214 N. 24th St. No one commented during a public hearing.
The commission also reduced its minimum bid to $293,000, which is the buildings estimated fair market value based on an appraisal conducted for the county by Charlie Hamwey, of Real Estate by Hamwey.
The county initially had set a minimum bid of $320,000.
Finance Director Scott Turner recommended reducing the minimum price closer to the fair market value and to hope the auction will have competitive bidding so the county can proceed with its remodeling plans.
If the county didnt sell the building for $320,000, it could not accept a lower bid and would have to try again at another auction, said Dan Schwarz, chief deputy county attorney. Schwarz also said hes shown the property to a few prospective buyers.
The county plans to use sale proceeds toward construction of a new building at MetraPark for the countys Extension Service, which is located in the courthouse. Moving Extension to MetraPark would provide courthouse space for the expansion of the county attorneys office and relocation of other offices within the courthouse. The county bought the brick building in a complicated land deal to make room for the new federal courthouse.

Yellowstone County approves auction of downtown office building

VALPARAISO The FBI has broadened its scrutiny of Porter County, this time going after records regarding the construction of Porter Regional Hospital and an adjacent medical office building.
Agents were at the Porter County Plan Commission office Friday afternoon and Monday morning, asking for copies of building permits for the two structures, said Robert Thompson, executive director of the plan commission.
Thats all I can say, he said.
The document request came less than a week after Porter County Councilman Jim Biggs, R-1st District, held a news conference March 4 questioning whether the medical office building, owned by a trust, should be part of a 10-year tax abatement the council has granted to the hospital.
He also questioned the trusts arrangement with the hospital which owns the land on which the medical office sits and noted the degree of clandestineness on the part of the hospital in regards to the medical building.
A high-ranking official with the trust has said theres nothing unusual about the arrangement, and said Wednesday the trust is not seeking a tax abatement for the medical building.
The building is adjacent to the hospital, at Indiana 49 and U.S. 6.
This is the fourth time since November the FBI has requested documents regarding the county.
