Pocono Mountain Regional Police face higher costs due to water at headquarters - August 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    July 30, 2014

A more than $150,000 mold remediation project at the Pocono Mountain Regional Police Department headquarters has revealed deeper water issues that might continue to push costs higher.

Police commission members met for a special meeting Tuesday night to consider new approvals with a representative from Strunk-Albert Engineering, the company hired in April at a $156,618 cost. Police and officials first contacted Strunk-Albert to do a walk-through of the space in the fall after noticing mold in the basement.

The remediation process, which began about six weeks ago, has displaced the commission from its typical meeting space. Members met at Tobyhanna Township on Tuesday.

The evidence room is also in the basement and was not part of the original cost estimate, which Constructional Project Manager John E. Stevens, of Strunk-Albert, said was because the company did not initially get access to inspect it. The board approved an additional $3,850 to address the evidence room mold issues.

But interim police chief Chris Wagner said the department prepped in advance of the work and moved storage items out of the rooms in the basement. He also told the commission that evidence is in sealed bins, and some was moved, so activities in the room will not be a problem.

"It's been a minimal intrusion into our daily operations," Wagner said after the meeting.

The final cost of the project will be at least several thousand dollars more than first projected and will take longer after engineers and contractors discovered additional water issues after opening up the space.

Mount Pocono police representative Roy Gross, a longtime commission member, expressed frustration that a membrane the commission paid extra for at the time of construction did not apparently prevent water from entering.

"Well, I think we were sold a bill of goods on that supposed extra defense," he said of the membrane, adding that one of his main goals at the time of construction was a dry basement.

Mold forces relocation of Haley hospital patients - August 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

TAMPA About a half dozen patients in the James A. Haley Veterans Hospital Spinal Cord Injury Center had to be moved and a hallway sealed off after mold was discovered in an area near the patient care section in May, hospital officials say.

The mold was found during repairs after a pipe burst in March.

As a precaution we relocated the patients until the work was complete and retests confirmed no microbial growth, said Kateriniea Littles, a Haley spokeswoman.

The patients were moved for about three weeks, said Littles. The work on the first floor of the Spinal Cord Injury Center egan May 28 and is expected to wrap up in the middle of August, Littles said.

The disruption led at least one patient to complain to Congress.

Problems began March 21, Littles said, when a half-inch hot water line ruptured in the mechanical space of the new polytrauma center. The center was under construction at the time.

The ruptured line cause water to flow into the first floor of the Spinal Cord Injury Center, Littles said, with most of the damage limited to sections of the first floor that contain the VA Internet Caf, office spaces, storage rooms, conference rooms, locker rooms and a hallway.

Archer Western DeMaria, the general contractor on the polytrauma center project, called in a company called DRIRITE to perform initial drying services, Littles said. DRIRITE conducted an inspection of each room to identify the scope of the water damaged areas using infrared camera technology.

Archer Western DeMaria then hired Ericksons Drying Services Corp., a licensed contractor for water damage and mold remediation, which brought in a certified industrial hygienist, Littles said.

The cleanup effort has been extensive.

Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Ill., met Friday with a White House official to call for removing upper management at Hines Veterans Affairs Hospital, which he said would create a culture of accountability for the embattled facility.

Kirk also met with Hines director Joan Ricard, whom he has repeatedly recommended be removed.

He again called for her termination, adding I suggested to her that she get a criminal lawyer to defend her against the upcoming FBI investigation Im going to recommend.

The Illinois senator met with Deputy White House Chief of Staff Rob Nabors to address a plethora of issues at Hines, including long wait times for veterans, and even an alleged mold problem. Kirks staff issued photos of what they said was mold discovered in a newly renovated area of the hospital.

Kirk first met with Nabors and hospital whistleblowers, including Germaine Clarno, a Hines social worker who is local president of a union representing hospital employees. He then met with Nabors, Hines representatives, including Ricard, as well as Sen. Dick Durbin and congressional officials.

Kirk suggested the hospital take on a Navy culture:
