CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) - Complaints from City workers led to the shutdown of one local office and an emergency evacuation due to elevated mold levels Wednesday.
The complaint came from an employee of one of the buildings at the city's office complex near Ayers and Holly. Building 3-C housed the heavy equipment production building and contains a corner dispatch office.
Fleet Maintenance Director Jim Davis said a deteriorating roof and the recent rains led to the testing of the office air quality earlier this week, and the employees will now be working out of a portable building brought in Wednesday.
"I had a couple of employees talk to me and they said, 'You know what? I'm not sure about the air quality in here.' That's the way it went down," Davis said. "So I immediately acted. We moved everybody out. Did the test. Found elevated mold levels and went from there."
The mold remediation involves removing everything in the office and decontaminating those materials, as well as the empty offices. Davis said the two regular employees will not return to the old office until the roof is replaced and the office is remodeled.

TRAVERSE CITY -- A building proposed as a new emergency homeless shelter in Traverse City has been found to contain a dangerous mold.
A member of the board of directors for Safe Harbor believes that this should not impact the group's plans for the building.
The building in question is at 517 Wellington, near the corner of Wellington and Eighth Street in Traverse City.
The building is currently being used as a warehouse for multiple groups including the Traverse City Film Festival and The History Center in Traverse City.
The Safe Harbor board member says any remediation of the mold found in the building will be the responsibility of Traverse City and will need to be completed before Safe Harbor would lease the building for an emergency shelter.
And before any lease agreement can be put together, the Traverse City Commission must first agree to allow the emergency shelter to be located at that site.
Commissioners could vote on the special land use permit for the proposed emergency shelter at their meeting November 17th.

Dan Gross/The Gazette
Jose Pineda, a technician with ServPro, examines the black mold in a closet of an apartment in Montgomery Village.
When tenant Tawanna King discovered mold in a corner at the top of her hall closet and beneath the kitchen sink in the condo she rents in the Center Court complex on Stedwick Road in Montgomery Village, she knew she had to do something.
King had developed breathing problems because of mold in a previous apartment in Burtonsville, and she didnt want to risk a return of the condition.
I fought too hard to get [better], she said. I dont need a setback.
But like many renters, she wasnt sure how serious the situation was or what to do about it. She said she hopes that talking publicly about her experience will help others.
I feel in my heart that a lot of people dont know about it, or who to call about it, she said. It needs to be brought to light.
Mold grows where there is moisture and functions like a fuzzy dandelion when disturbed, it releases invisible spores that spread in every direction.
If left to grow, which it quickly does in wet conditions, it can cause breathing problems, especially for people with asthma, according to the Maryland Department of the Environment.
King, who does not have renters insurance, called her landlord, Karim Atarzada of Montgomery Village, who owns two units in the 132-unit Center Court complex.

Mold Remediation - Removing your Mold Problem
Buildings with mold covered surfaces that measure more than ten square feet present an insidious health hazard that could seriously compromise the immune systems of those exposed to them. In order to be made safe, these buildings require the services of a mold removal contractor who specializes in mold remediation. Mold remediation is the cleanup process for large areas of mold most often found in schools, government buildings and commercial buildings as well as apartment buildings.
Mold remediation, like other mold cleanup, is a specialized service that should be completed by a professional contractor. Since some of the buildings in need of mold remediation are public buildings, the health of an entire community may rely on the professional contractor hired. Contractors are also expected to preserve the integrity of the site and to ensure the complete, safe removal of spores. Your home is equally as important and will receive the same type of remediation as a larger building only on a smaller scale. The health of you and your family's health is their goal.
The process of mold remediation differs from other types of remediation because there is a need for containment of the affected area. Because mold remediation is done on any size mold infestations, it can be challenging to locate the source of the moisture and make sure that all the mold is removed. Restoring the building to a usable, uncontaminated state is challenging when mold can be found:
Treating any areas of mold requires that certain precautions be taken, not only for the safety of the contractor, but also for the safety of the people that occupy or work in the building. Once you or your contractor has discovered that mold remediation is necessary, you should contact your health professional. They should be notified of the problem, they will be able to consult with your contractor during the mold remediation process to limit any physical contamination. They may also advise you to quarantine the part of your house or building that is infested and being remediated.
When containing the area and doing the mold remediation, professional techniques, tools and protective gear must be used. Mold remediation steps include:
Each contractor will have their own procedures of Mold Remediation for the client to choose from for their home's or business's individual need.
Often, buildings we enter every day are in need of mold remediation. If you're concerned that your building or home may be posing a danger, use our directory to find an experienced mold remediation contractor in your area.
