The first of two free mold-remediation workshops will be offered this Saturday, Nov. 8, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Manville Public Library on South 10th Avenue.

Pre-registration is preferred, though walk-ins will be accepted. To register contact Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) Coordinator Eileen Allen, RN, at the Somerset County Health Department at 908-203-6069 or allene@co.somerset.nj.us

All pre-registered households will receive a free mold-mitigation kit worth $55.

Mold has been a serious issue in many communities that were hit by flooding during the past two major storms, said Freeholder Deputy Director Mark Caliguire, health department liaison. This free workshop will help answer many questions residents may still have.

The program is co-sponsored by the Somerset County Department of Health, the MRC-Manville Board of Health Unit and the New Jersey Department of Health. A second workshop has been scheduled for Dec. 6 from 10 a.m. to noon at Manville Fire House No. 3 on North Eighth Avenue.

Presenter at both workshops will be Claire T. Galiano, an experienced health and safety trainer from the New Jersey Work Environment Council and the International Chemical Workers Council for Health. She also is OSHA-authorized to teach mediation pertaining to disasters, general industry and construction. She will address what homeowners can do to safely deal with the challenges of identifying and removing mold.

Mold can cause staining of walls and ceilings and can affect building components, causing property damage. Exposure to mold can cause nasal and throat irritation, coughing or wheezing, eye irritation and in some cases skin irritation. Individuals at highest risk include those with pre-existing health conditions such as allergies, lung conditions, asthma or emphysema, as well as infants and the elderly. Anyone who suspects he or she might have mold exposure-related health issues should contact a physician.

Manville Public Library to hold mold remediation workshop, Nov. 8

Last week, some residents in the East Village said they welcome Western Illinois Universitys recent efforts to fight mold problems in their apartments but remained concerned that not enough is being done.

The issue of mold in the student-family housing complex publicly surfaced Oct. 7 when several tenants complained about the conditions during a Student Government Association (SGA) meeting.

Western officials have since committed additional staff to mold remediation. Nevertheless, some close to the situation said issues escalated due to slow initial response.

It accelerated fast and (Facilities Management) ramped up the number of people when they learned it had accelerated, said John Biernbaum, associate vice president for student services at Western.

Since the issue was made public 28 days ago, university officials said maintenance and cleaning staff logged more than 19,000 hours in overtime at the complex.

Some residents believe something should have been done about the mold prior to the SGA meeting.

You know its a lot of chaos going on now, said Shavonya Williams, an East Village resident who attended the meeting. I feel like thats the only reason they did something about it.

In days following the meeting, 27 (of 36) mold-infected apartments were disinfected and assessed for potential hazard. Facilities Management, University Housing and Dining Services (UHDS) and Physical Plant employees managed a routine to contain the problem in each affected apartment.

Our guys are spread all through them, said Scott Coker, Westerns Director of Facilities Management. If an insulator is in there working on insulation, then we cant be painting yet. Its a very sequential operation.

While staff evaluated the extent of the problem in each apartment and rated them based on severity, some, like Williams, questioned those assessments. She said employees deemed bleach sufficient to clean affected areas in her apartment.
