BINUHUSAN NG KUMUKULONG TUBIG | Saudi recruiter of abused OFW suspended - May 20, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

InterAksyon.com The online news portal of TV5

MANILA The Philippine embassy in Riyadh on Monday suspended the Saudi agency that recruited the Filipina maid whose employer's mother poured boiling water on her.

The case of Pahima Alagasi Palacasi, 23, of Malapaan, Pikit Cotabato, went viral on social media over the weekend after her cousin posted pictures of her burnt body on Facebook.

Palacasi, for her part, is determined to pursue her case against her employer, said Labor Attache to Riyadh Rustico Dela Fuente in his report to Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz.

"OFW Palacasi is determined to file a case against the employer (identified by Palacasi as Adil Akmad Badjuid). The embassy and the POLO will assist her," he added.

Philippine Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Ezzedin Tago, through the embassys Assistance to Nationals Section and the Philippine Overseas Labor Office, immediately ordered suspension of Al Motkasess Recruitment Office, stopping it from recruiting more workers from the Philippines. Its partner in the Philippines is A-M Philippine Professional Services Corporation.

    What happened

A few days after she arrived at her employers house in Riyadh last March 2014, Palacasi felt homesick and cried constantly. Palacasi said her male employer constantly kicked and lashed her.

Her employer then brought her back to the Saudi recruiter, who transferred her to the house of her employers mother because her employers wife did not want her back.

At about12 p.m. on May 4, the mother, who did not speak English, poured boiled water on Palacasi over a simple misunderstanding. In separate media accounts, Palacasi was allegedly slow in preparing the mothers cup of coffee.

SMALL-BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT: Dust Bunnys Maid Service - May 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Gertrude Navikas is proud of the work she and her employees accomplish for her Dust Bunnys Maid Service clients.

"It's a deep clean every time. We do the hands and knees," Navikas said.

The Lowell resident began cleaning houses a few years ago as a way to pay her way through nursing school.

Three years ago, though, Navikas made the decision to go into business to give herself the flexibility she needed to care for her ailing father. "It was what I chose to do. ... Dad died in November," she said.

Navikas is all about flexibility for herself, her employees and her clients.

"As a single mom, it allows me to be with my kids. I have a son who is a freshman at IU, a daughter who's a sophomore at the high school and a 7-year old at St. Marys (Elementary School in Crown Point)," Navikas said.

The businesswoman said she hires both women and men, most of which hold other part-time jobs. Some are single parents. "I work around their schedules with their other jobs. I want to be able to help them because I understand," Navikas said.

Unlike some cleaning services, all employees are insured and bonded, and there are no client contracts. "I don't want to lock people in," she said.

The three years have held one surprise, Navikas said. "I did not know I would grow as fast as I did."

Dust Bunnys Maid Service has clients reaching west to Crete and Grant Park in Illinois, north to Hammond and south to DeMotte, Roselawn and Wheatfield. Most are residential, but she has commercial clients as well.

Security guard in court over $10 'coffee money' - May 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SINGAPORE - A $10 bribe cost former Certis Cisco security guard Kalaiarasan Muniandy his job and landed him in court yesterday, when he was charged with corruption.

The 22-year-old Malaysian allegedly took the "coffee money" from a maid in return for not taking action against her for drinking water at Paya Lebar MRT station on Jan 19.

In court, he indicated that he wished to plead guilty. His case will be mentioned next Friday. The maximum penalty for corruption is a $100,000 fine and five years' jail.

Responding to a media query, Certis Cisco's vice-president of group marketing and corporate communications Richard Lau said: "At Certis Cisco, we train and expect our officers to uphold high standards of professionalism and integrity. We do not tolerate misdemeanour of any kind." The accused's services have been terminated by the company, he said.

Kalaiarasan, who was employed by Certis Cisco's Protection Services, had been attached to SMRT. Part of his duty as a transit security officer was to conduct bag checks on commuters.

The Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau said yesterday it received information from police on Feb 20 alleging that one of its guards had obtained "coffee money" from a maid in return for him doing her a favour.

Further investigation showed Kalaiarasan had spotted Hasna drinking water at the station. He told her she would be issued with a summons of $300 for consuming water. He also recorded her particulars on a bag check list. Hasna could not pay the fine and told Kalaiarasan she had only $10.

He allegedly asked her to place the note on his desk. She was then allowed to leave. Subsequently, he allegedly blotted out her particulars from the list.

Security officer charged with getting $10 from maid at MRT station - May 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Kalaiarasan Muniandy was employed by Certis Cisco Protection Services when he allegedly got $10 cash from one "Hasna" at Paya Lebar MRT station, in exchange for not taking further action against her for drinking water on Jan 19 this year.

Get the full story from The Straits Times.

Here is the full statment from the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau:

A little bit never hurt anyone - so the old saying goes But it is not so when it comes to corruption. No amount of "coffee money", no matter how small, will be overlooked.

The accused, Kalaiarasan Muniandy ("Kalaiarasan"), a 22 year-old Malaysian was employed by Certis Cisco Protection Services Pte Ltd as a Security Officer. He was attached to SMRT Corporation Ltd and deployed at the Paya Lebar MRT station. Part of his duty as a Transit Security Officer was to conduct bag checks on commuters.

On 20 February 2014, the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) received information from the Ang Mo Kio Police Division alleging that a Certis Cisco guard had obtained "coffee money" from a domestic helper in return for a favour.

Subsequent investigations revealed that on 19 January 2014, Kalaiarasan had spotted Hasna, a domestic helper, consuming water at Paya Lebar MRT station. The accused informed Hasna that she would be issued with a summons of $300 for consuming water at a MRT station. He also recorded her particulars on a bag check list.

However, Hasna was unable to pay the fine, and told him that she only had $10 with her. The accused then asked Hasna to place the $10 on his desk, which she did. She was allowed to leave after that. Subsequently, the accused blotted out Hasna's particulars from the bag check list.

Kalaiarasan will be charged with one count of corruptly obtaining a gratification of $10 in return for a favour, an offence punishable under Section 6(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, Chapter 241.

Singapore has always adopted a zero tolerance approach towards corruption. The CPIB takes a serious view of any corrupt practices, and will not hesitate to take action against any party involved in such acts.
