Tortured Filipino maid faces fresh snag in repatriation - October 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

(MENAFN - Arab News) The female Filipino domestic helper who was allegedly scalded by her employer in May this year is now facing a case of slander filed by her sponsor resulting in a delay in the repatriation of the domestic help.

In his letter to Blas F. Ople Policy Center Philippine Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Ezzedin Tago said the employer and his mother had filed a 'qadf' saying that Fahima had falsely accused them of scalding her with hot water. He said the prosecutor had dismissed the public rights case against the employer's mother for throwing hot water on her maid.

According to the envoy Fahima had already received monetary compensation from the Philippines and Saudi recruitment agencies. However this new development has led to a delay in her repatriation.

Tago said that Fahima is in good health but there are several developments in her case. 'I have asked for a full assessment of the case from the GPH (Government of the Philippines) hired lawyer' Ambassador Tago added. He said that before he went on leave he had met with the MFA (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) Undersecretary for Consular Affairs specifically to represent Fahima's case.

Referring to another case of a Filipino minor Fatima who was apparently recruited through a Philippine agency involved in human trafficking the envoy said that the child had already been repatriated to the Philippines on Aug. 14. Fatima had managed to seek shelter at the PH-rented shelter Bahay Kalinga in Riyadh.

Meanwhile an anti-human trafficking Filipino group has appealed for help to repatriate and obtain justice for a 13-year-old Filipino who was allegedly being maltreated by her employer in Riyadh as she was unfit for household chores.

The young Filipino from Sarangani Province in Mindanao arrived in Riyadh on April 20 this year to work with a family here. Subsequently the family members unhappy with her work began to abuse her physically with beatings.

`A sisterhood nobody wants to be a part of` - October 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

CAYCE, SC (WIS) - Kay Strickland and Marlo McKelvey Kanipe just met, but they appear to have been friends for years. They are connected by a bond that no woman wants to share with another.

"It's a sisterhood that nobody wants to be a part of," Strickland says.

They are both breast cancer survivors.

Kanipe, who owns Deserved Comfort Housekeeping, LLC is at Strickland's house to make sure her home gets cleaning services through the Cleaning for a Reason program. Deserved Comfort Housekeeping is one of more than 1,100 maid services nationwide participating in Cleaning for a Reason.

"This has been awesome," Strickland says. "Before, nothing like this was available."

This is Strickland's second turn with breast cancer. Her first was 19 years ago. Since then, the oncologist who treated her has retired.

"The knowledge. The technology," she says. "Everything this time was so much easier because you didn't go into it blind and scared to death. There's people holding your hand. I hate telling people, after 19 years, that I have it again. But I also want everybody to be aware that it doesn't ever go away."

Strickland says if she hadn't caught the cancer early, she wouldn't be here now.

"The early detection saved me this time and saved me the time before."

Strickland emphasizes that same early detection for all women.

TruBlue Total House Care Set for Explosive Growth - October 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Cincinnati, OH (PRWEB) October 08, 2014

A new study from the Joint Center for Housing Studies shows that the number of people over the age of 75 will double from 6.9 million to 13.4 million in the next 20 years and that substantial business opportunities exist in helping older adults modify their home to suit evolving needs.

TruBlue Total House Care, a Cincinnati-based franchise specializing in providing complete house care, home improvements, maid services and more, is actively recruiting new franchise owners across the country who can help these seniors live safely and comfortably in their homes.

TruBlue is on the cusp of explosive growth and were looking for innovative and passionate franchise owners who can expand the reach of our services nationwide. This new report from the JCHS validates what weve already learned from our work in the field seniors have a need for trustworthy business owners who can help them live comfortably in their homes. Thats a service we provide every day and thats part of what makes TruBlue a great business opportunity, said Mark Cottle, COO of TruBlue.

The JCHS report also highlighted that millions of older adults who develop disabilities live in homes that lack accessibility features such as a no-step entry, single-floor living, extra-wide doorways and halls, accessible electrical controls and switches, and lever-style door and faucet handles. In fact, a 2011 American Housing Survey report reports that just 1 percent of US housing units have all five of these universal design features. Roughly two in five housing units in the United States have either none or only one of these features.

Our TruBlue franchise owners and their teams are available to help with these home renovations and also provide the day-to-day maintenance and care every home needs. We all want our communities seniors to be able to age comfortably in place and TruBlue can make that possible, Cottle said.

TruBlue provides complete and affordable solutions for all house care needs including home improvements, maid services, lawn care, emergency repair services and more. In addition to seniors and busy homeowners, franchise owners work with real estate professionals, general contractors and property managers to maintain homes and rental properties, improve curb appeal, make final preparations to sell homes and more. TruBlue was founded in 2011 as part of the Strategic Franchising Systems family, which also includes Home Helpers, Direct Link, Fresh Coat Painters, Caring Transitions and The Growth Coach.

CBSA should staff its own detention centre: B.C. coroner's inquest (updated with video) - October 8, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

BURNABY - A coroners jury looking into the death of Mexican hotel maid Lucia Vega Jimenez is recommending that Canada Border Services Agency staff not contracted security guards monitor immigration detainees.

Other recommendations include civilian oversight of critical incidents in CBSA custody and a dedicated, above-ground holding centre for detainees that features natural light, ventilation and outside access.

Those characteristics are a far cry from the conditions present at the airports current holding centre, which is staffed by Genesis Security.

Jurors weighed in with the verdict late Tuesday, after hearing several days of testimony at the inquest into the death. Jimenez hanged herself in a shower stall at the Vancouver airports immigration holding centre on Dec. 20, 2013 and later died in hospital.

Jurors want a dedicated CBSA holding centre for detainees that is staffed by its own employees, located within a 30-minute drive of the airport, and with its own on-site courtroom for immigration hearings.

Jurors recommended that at a minimum, lawyers must have access to the airports holding centre. It must be fitted with call buttons for help, self-harm proofed, and equipped with telephones.

While the holding centre is staffed by subcontractors, jurors recommend that the CBSA access the video monitoring system at random times to ensure the appropriate number of staff are on site and that they are meeting their contractual requirements.

Jurors also recommended the federal government appoint an independent ombudsperson to mediate related concerns or complaints, and create a civilian organization to investigate critical incidents in CBSA custody.

Translators must also be available for detainees who can't understand English, the jury recommended.

"I'm blown away, basically,'' said Rocco Trigueros of the group Mexicans in Vancouver. "I'm very happy to read the recommendations because they are great, they are profound, they are responsible, and I think we were lucky to have a great jury because they were sensitive.''
