Q5: Bennett Jam set Tuesday at O-State - April 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

STILLWATER, Okla. Bennett Hall will be hosting the Bennett Jam at 5 p.m. Tuesday on the front lawn of the residence hall. Catherine Wilson, a freshman resident of Bennett, is co-chair of the sponsors and donations committee.

1 What is the Bennett Jam at Oklahoma State?

Bennett Jam is a benefit concert that Bennett Hall hosts each year. This year, all of the proceeds we raise are going to a little girl named Ainsley Peters who is currently battling leukemia.

2 How will Bennett Jam help the Peters family?

Ainsley is entering the maintenance round of chemotherapy, which means she still has around two years of treatment left. We are raising money to help the Peters family with medical expenses as well as lifestyle changes they have had to make to accommodate Ainsleys treatment.

3 Why was the Peters family chosen this year?

The Peters family lives in Stillwater, andAinsleys father, Chris, works for OrangeTech. Their involvement with OSU made them an easy choice to be this years recipient.

4 What entertainment and activities will there be?

We have fourmusical acts lined up this year: Marrell Jones,Voss, Jake Daniel Murphy and Travis McClearen. We willalso have food and raffle prizes that include a GoPro, a set of headphones donated by OrangeTech, and assorted gift cards from Stillwater stores and restaurants.

Lawn must be renewed after ravages of winter - April 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

AKRON, Ohio Chances are your lawn is looking a bit bedraggled after this rough winter.

Thats not surprising. Between brutally cold temperatures and drying winds, turf took a beating this year.

Probably it will come back just fine, but a little TLC can prevent problems, reverse damage and let your lawn green up faster, lawn care experts Melinda Myers and Joe Rimelspach said.

    Heres what they recommend.

    PREVENT SNOW MOLD

Grass in the shade and other places where snow and ice linger is susceptible to snow mold, a fuzzy, pink or gray fungus that can damage or kill grass, said Myers, a horticulturist, garden writer and radio and TV host whose books include The Ohio Lawn Guide.

Snow mold likes moist environments, she said, so its a good idea to lightly rake grass in those vulnerable areas to fluff it and allow light and air to penetrate. A leaf rake will work fine, Myers said.

The crowns of the grass plants are still alive, so the grass can come back, said Rimelspach, a turf grass disease specialist at Ohio State University. But Myers recommended taking action now, before you see signs of fungus.

Don't be overeager to start lawn work - April 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Each year in the spring, we tend to get very excited to be able to get back outside and work in our lawns and gardens. However, this is still fairly early in the year to do much work in our yards. This article was written to prepare you for when the best time is to begin lawncare activities in the spring.

Overseeding our lawns can take place between April 1 and April 30 for the cool season turfgrasses, such as Kentucky bluegrass and turf-type tall fescue. If you are planting a new warm season lawn or are adding plugs to thicken it up, you should wait until late May through June to do that. The warm season grasses would be either Buffalograss or Zoysiagrass. These would be the four best turfgrasses to use in our lawns in Southeast Nebraska.

When purchasing grass seed, ensure that you are purchasing seed that is weed free, there should only be 0.3 percent or less weed seed in the package and no noxious weeds should be found in the seed mixture. Avoid purchasing lawn seed that is advertised in the Sunday newspaper, as those are not usually good seed choices and are not suited well for our area. Avoid purchasing lawn seed that contains annual ryegrass as that is more of a weed species. The best seed choices are either 100 percent of turf-type tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, or Buffalograss or a mixture of tall fescue and bluegrass.

Mowing your lawn should begin as your lawn begins to grow again. We should mow our lawns to a height of at least 2 inches for Kentucky bluegrass and 2.5-3 inches for tall fescue. So, you can wait until the lawn gets to at least 3 inches before beginning the mowing routine in the spring. Remember, only mow off 1/3 of the grass each time that you mow. The lawn clippings may be left on the lawn or bagged and removed from the lawn, at your own discretion. If you return the clippings back to the turf, it will add up to 1 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet over the course of the growing season. This can account to one fertilizer application for your lawn over the growing season.

As for the fertilization, this should also wait until later in the spring. It is recommended to add 1.0 pound of fertilizer per 1,000 square feet between April 20th and May 10th. This fertilization should be done with a slow release fertilizer of your choosing. Fertilization of Kentucky bluegrass can be applied 4 more times throughout the growing season. To make this easier to remember, fertilizer treatments should be done on Arbor Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Halloween.

As for tall fescue lawns, these only need to be fertilized two times a year, in the early spring and late fall. We should avoid fertilization during the hot summer months to avoid possibly burning the grass blades. The spring fertilization can be done in combination with a pre-emergent herbicide that will combat crabgrass, foxtail, sandburs and goosegrass. Do not use crabgrass pre-emergent herbicides if you have overseeded in the spring until you have mowed your new seedlings at least 3 times. Dandelion and other winter annual weeds can be treated in combination with the Labor Day fertilizer treatment for best control.

Centre of excellence for gardeners - April 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

THE clocks have changed and longer days are on the way, so it is the perfect time to think about what is going on in your garden.

Dobbies Braehead General Manager Brendan Chambers in the popular store Pictures: Mark Mainz

Finding time for preparation to get planting and planning ahead for the months to come are all important just now, according to experts at Dobbies in Braehead.

Weeding, getting the lawn in good shape and planting a vegetable garden are all jobs that can be done now, even if the weather isn't particularly warm.

"Be canny, there can still be a bit of frost around, but lawn care is very relevant at the moment," advises store manager Kelvin Mobbs. "It is all about setting up routines, if you are going to look after it, it isn't something you do once and walk away. You've got to love your lawn and if you're going to feed it, do it frequently.

"Often people chuck their feed down, stand back and expect that to be it. But it needs repetition and it needs care."

Keen gardeners will already have been out to do the first cut of the year. If there is moss, tackle it now with a treatment that feeds the lawn, kills weeds and moss, then scarify the grass.

"You can do all this by hand, using a flexible grass rake that pulls out all the moss," explains horticultural manager Andy Garven. "Or you can use an electric lawn rake. If you're keen and really want the lawn to look good that's something to think about. You'd use it in the spring and then again in the autumn."

The number of people growing their own vegetables has risen and the time is right for planting seed potatoes and preparing tomato plants for the months ahead. They are projects popular with children and this Dobbies works with four local schools.

"Potatoes are easy things to grow, you can grow them in lots of different kinds of containers," says Andy. "Chit them to get them started, then put them in."

Innerfaith Disciple House helps men who have hit rock bottom - April 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Today he is the president and founder of Innerfaith Disciple House in Grangerland, however Chris Follett used to be on the fast track to nowhere.

At the age 11, I started smoking cigarettes. By 12 years old, I was drinking alcohol on a daily basis. By the age of 14, I was selling and smoking marijuana and began my life as a career criminal, Follett said. As you can imagine, it wasn't long before I saw jail. I was incarcerated the first time at 17 for possession of drugs.

By the age of 19, he was a resident at the Texas Department of Corrections.

For the next four years, Follett fell deeper and deeper into his alcohol addiction and his life was spiraling out of control, he said. It was when he hit rock bottom and tried to commit suicide that God used various family members to get his attention, he said. He made the choice to totally surrender his life to God, he added.

Innerfaith Disciple House is a residential Christian character-building and discipleship program for men 18 and older. The length of stay is a mandatory minimum of six months.

Innerfaith Disciple House is not a drug and alcohol treatment or rehab program, Follett said. Even though we reach out to men that struggle with drugs and alcohol, it is a discipleship program first and foremost. Men are taught how to walk faithfully with God in the same manner Jesus walked, through surrender, obedience and service, Follett said.

In addition to the three critical Christian character-building concepts of surrender, obedience and service, Innerfaith Disciple House presents biblical teaching that focuses its full attention on three life and death relationships that all men must come to terms with: mans relationship with God, his relationship with himself, and his relationship with others.

When a man has come to the end of himself, when he has hit rock bottom and his spirit is truly broken, whether through drugs alcohol, or lifes other hurts, habits, or hang-ups, he must be completely ready and willing to dedicate at least six months of his immediate future to bury his old, former self and become a new creation through Christ Jesus, Follett said.

The Old Man Graveyard, on the property at Innerfaith Disciple House, is the place where the graduates bury their old life of drugs and alcohol abuse for good, Follett said. To never dig that lifestyle up again and to remind them that they are a new creation in Christ Jesus, have been given a new life, no longer in bondage to drugs and alcohol.

Innerfaith Disciple House is a private non-profit ministry supported through the faithful donations, contributions, and tithes of others.

Boston Red Sox player David "Big Papi" Ortiz takes a selfie with President Barack Obama while holding a Boston Red Sox jersey presented to the president at the White House on Tuesday. Obama's jersey number reflects that he's the 44th president.

    The Associated Press

Not all of the ceremonial greeting was quite so serious. David Ortiz, Boston's best-known player, presented the president with a RedSox jersey emblazoned with "Obama" and the number 44 on the back, then promptly took a cell phone picture of himself and the chief executive. "What an honor, thanks for the #selfie @BarackObama" he quickly tweeted.

And Jonny Gomes, an outfielder, strolled the White House grounds dressed in a sports jacket that looked like an American flag, stars on one half, and stripes on the other.

Standing in front of players and team officials, Obama noted that the RedSox have won three championships in the past decade, more than any other team.

He said sports sometimes "seems like it's trivial, it's just an entertainment. And then, every once in a while, you're reminded that sports represents something else and it has the power to bring people together like almost nothing else can."

Three people were killed and more than 260 injured nearly a year ago in a bombing at the Boston Marathon. The Red Sox staged a tribute to the victims on the field and had "Boston Strong" symbols sewn into their uniforms. "The point is, Boston and the Red Sox were one," Obama said.

"When they visited bombing victims in the hospital, when they played ball with kids getting cancer treatment, when they started a program to help wounded warriors get treatment at Mass General (Hospital), these guys were saying, `we're all on the same team.' "

Obama, a Chicago White Sox fan, wished Boston good luck this season, then added, "May the best Sox win."

Thorny problems: can I introduce daisies to my lawn? - April 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Moss-killing products based on natural fatty acids (Bayer Moss Killer) or pelargonic acid (Scotts Weedol Max) should be used with care around green, non-woody garden plants as they can damage them. The best course of action where moss is blanketing borders is to scrape away as much as possible from around plants and lightly cultivate the soil between them with a hoe or handfork. Adding organic matter to the soil to improve drainage is helpful. Mushroom compost (which is slightly alkaline) would be useful for this, though obviously not in great quantities around acid-loving woodland plants.

    Daisy, daisy

Q: I would rather like daisies to grow in my garden as I find them pretty and also, I understand, they are attractive to bees. How do I go about introducing daisies into my lawn or do you think this would be inadvisable in case they might overwhelm the grass?

    Alison Hood, via email

A: By all means grow daisies on your lawn if that is what you would like to do perhaps the easiest way to do so would be to swap a piece of your turf for a daisy-strewn square belonging to a lawn-proud neighbour, before he/she (probably he) knobbles them with a weedkiller. From this imported patch they would be sure to spread quickly.

People who like immaculate green lawns wage war on anything that flowers, but one of the great things about gardening is that you can do what you like out there as long as what you do (or plant) doesnt demolish local property values. A little rash of daisies on a lawn is not exactly going to do that, is it?

However, one of the downsides of encouraging daisy proliferation is the fact that, since they seem to flower randomly more or less all summer, you will not really be able to mow the grass at all without decapitating them each time you do so, which I suspect you would hate doing.

Have you considered filling your garden with all sorts of other such lovely composite flowers with universally bright petals that attract all sorts of pollinating insects? Since you clearly like tiddlers, how about starting with the beautifully messy little wall-and-paving-invading Spanish daisy (Erigeron karvinskianus).

You could let your daisy-quest become a bit of a thing. In pots, beds and borders you could assemble an endless daisy parade, consisting of both annuals and perennials, that would light up the garden from early spring, starting with the earliest, Doronicum orientale (leopards bane), ending in late autumn with Inula hookeri, and on the way taking in all sorts of summer-flowering plants in the general daisy (Asteraceae/Compositae) plant families.

Look for plants with names such as aster, of course, and bellis, leucanthemum, helianthus and helianthemum, rudbeckia, and argyranthemum to name but a few.

One of the most popular of these new products is their Best Yet organic bug spray. This spray is great for homeowners to repel and kill the most common pests while not harming people, plants or animals.
