Bridgewater couple's dilemma: Buy groceries or clear snow? - October 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A Bridgewater couple say theyll be forced to choose between buying groceries and getting their driveway shovelled this winter after receiving notice a financial aid program they use has just been capped.

Ron Facey is a double amputee. A leg was amputated below the knee six years ago, and the 68-year-old is also without his left leg, which was amputated below the knee Dec. 26. Six days later, it had to be amputated above the knee; a few days after that, he suffered a massive heart attack.

I cant do anything physical, and she has heart trouble, he said of his wife, Helena Teal-Facey.

But they have been able to stay in their modest home because of financial help they began receiving in May through a pilot program to help low-income seniors with daily activities.

Health and Wellness Minister Leo Glavine said the $1-million program is to support seniors staying in their homes by helping to pay for such things as lawn mowing, snow shovelling and getting to medical appointments.

Staying in their own home is not only important to most seniors, it also reduces hospital stays and the pressure and cost for long-term beds, said Chester-St. Margarets MLA Denise Peterson-Rafuse, who was part of the NDP government that instituted the pilot program.

Glavine said the money is allocated to each district health authority to disburse however it sees fit.

On the South Shore, a qualifying family received up to $500 a month. However, South Shore Health recently sent the Faceys a letter saying the program is now capped due to high demand, and recipients will qualify for up to $500 a year.

They have already used that up, having spent $716.85 on mowing over the summer.

If we dont get help with snow removal, were going to have to take money from somewhere else, Facey said.

Public masturbator appears in court - October 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A "lonely" man has been charged with masturbating in women's public toilets and pestering women for sexual services or their underwear.

Yook Suk Choi, 36, appeared at Christchurch District Court today to admit one charge of obscene exposure in a public place and three charges of offensive language and behaviour.

The court heard the police summary of facts that outlined Choi's bizarre attempts at attracting the opposite sex.

At 11am on September 1 this year, Choi was found inside the women's public toilets near New Brighton pier.

A woman left her toilet stall and saw unemployed Choi "standing there masturbating".

The "shocked" woman asked Choi if he was aware that he was in the women's toilets.

"(Choi) replied that he knew that and the complainant ran out of the toilets," police said.

Just one hour later, a woman came out of the nearby Waimairi Surf Club public toilets when she was approached by Choi.

He asked her if she could take him into the women's toilet and perform a sex act on him.

"The woman was so concerned for her safety that she ran to her car and pretended to use her cellphone, which is when the defendant drove away in his car," the police version of events said.

Lawn mowing, snow removal ordinances considered - October 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Amendments to two city ordinances regarding mowing lawns and snow and ice removal in Boone passed first readings at the city council meeting Monday night.

We are looking to change the ordinances for snow and ice accumulation and mowing, said Director of Public Safety and Boone Police Chief Bill Skare. He requested the change so the ordinances would mirror each other. Right now theyre different.

The snow and ice removal ordinance requires owners of commercial property to remove snow and ice within 24 hours and residents within 48 hours after a snowstorm. If removal is not done, the city can hire a contractor to do it and fees are assessed to property owners.

All lawns, which, according to city code, must be kept below 12 inches in height, weeds included. If a yard is found in violation, the city can hire a contractor to mow it and assess the contractors fee to the property owner.

If council approves the amendments, notices of fees will no longer be sent through the mail, but assessed on property owners taxes. Penalties for violations of either city code will be a $50 civil fee and $5 administration fee, plus the contractors fee, which is different for each property.

Were trying to cut out some of the paperwork and streamline it so Mike (Salati, community service officer) doesnt spend so much time on the (administration) stuff so that he can do other things, Skare said.

Currently, if Salati answers a complaint or finds a yard in violation, he will send the property owner a letter informing them they need to mow the lawn. The property owner has 10 days to comply. After the 10-day period has expired, Salati has to go out and confirm that the lawn has been mowed. If not, he hires a contractor to do it. By then, Skare said, the grass may be two feet tall.

What this does is once Mike finds it at 12 inches, instead of going back and sending a letter, hes getting a contractor right away, Skare said. It gets us away from that two feet of grass.

If council approves the amended ordinances, public notices would be published in the spring and fall, respectively, in the Boone News-Republican, reminding citizens of the requirements, Skare said.

He is also planning on sending out information about the amended ordinances with the city water bills, if the ordinances are approved.

Growing numbers of boys work as babysitters - October 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

FORT MYERS, Fla.- Is your son looking for a job? You may want to suggest he leave the mower at home and offer up his services as a babysitter!

With the holidays just around the corner, many boys are discovering that babysitting gigs can bring in big bucks.

Babysitting isn't just fun and games for high school student Sam Latzsch. It's a paycheck and a growing trend, according to the American Red Cross.

"Gender roles are becoming less defined. We've seen an increase in teen boys and young males register for our babysitting courses," said Grant Hansen with the Red Cross.

The numbers are expected to grow so much that the Red Cross is making changes to the curriculum to reflect the new demographic.

"We wanted to make sure they're well represented in the classroom courses, so many of our videos now feature young males going through their instruction," said Hansen.

Author Cary Siegel says young men are beginning to see the multiple benefits of babysitting, compared to more traditional jobs for a teen boy.

"One of them is the fact that, you know what, it pays pretty good. Two is it's a lot easier than the manual labor. Three, it's more flexible in terms of what they can do in terms of the hours and how do it. And you know what, four, it's probably a little bit more enjoyable," said Siegel.

But Hansen points out babysitting brings its own challenges.

"It may not be sweating and grueling like digging a ditch or mowing a lawn or being behind a counter all day, but you're very hands on as a sitter. You're playing with the kids, you're always mindful of safety and things like that."

Flick: Funeral home drive-through viewing now! - October 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

It was 1930s humorist Will Rogers who once delivered the line, "All I know is what I read in the papers."

In the mid-20th century, he meant that to be humorous.

    But in the 2000s?

Heck, with todays amazing news, who needs humorists? Yes, thanks to the news services and the country's leading newspapers, this is your latest installment of News Is Stranger Than Fiction:

Seizing on the popularity and convenience of drive-through windows at places like banks and fast-food restaurants, a funeral home in Saginaw, Mich., announced it was launching "drive-through viewing," too, after an elderly woman could not make it inside the home to attend her husbands services and the owner said he saw a growing need.

In Panama City, Fla., a U.S. Congressman running for re-election drew criticism when, in an off-handed comment, he touted attending women's lingerie parties as one way to show how he supports women.

Along an expressway in San Diego, a semitrailer truck hauling fruit overturned and spilled 30,000 oranges onto the highway. As one trucker radioed back, "O.J. is all over the California highways again."

In Davenport, Iowa, hailing the state's same-sex marriage law, a 91-year-old lesbian and her 90-year-old lesbian partner married, after 76 years of "dating."

At a home in Nokomis, Fla., after breaking in, collecting its jewels and placing them in a pillow case, a 29-year-old man sat on a bed and fell asleep so soundly, when a cleaning lady later spotted him on the bed and called police, he continued to sleep, even as police arrived and took pictures of him. (Attached here is one of the photos.)

In Two Rivers, Wis., a 37-year-old man who slipped a disc in his back had five orgasms on the drive to the hospital and another 95 orgasms before the end of the day and was diagnosed with a rare condition known as Persistent Genital Arousal Syndrome and the man said it was not pleasant. "When you're on your knees at your father's funeral beside his casket, saying goodbye to him," said Dale Decker, "and you have nine orgasms right there while your whole family is standing behind you, it is not good."

Improved Lawn Mower Allows For Strain-Free Mowing Invented by InventHelp Client (ATH-164) - September 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Pittsburgh, PA (PRWEB) September 27, 2014

It's difficult for people to cut their grass regularly, especially if they have a busy schedule, a physical disability or age-related limitations. "This inspired me to design an easier way for such people to complete this task," said one of three inventors from Douglasville, Ga.

The patent-pending LAWN CARE ELITE provides an easier way to mow a lawn. As a result, it prevents strain and hassle, as well as saves time and effort. Easy to use and producible in design variations, it's ideal for households and lawn-care services.

The original design was submitted to the Atlanta office of InventHelp. It is currently available for licensing or sale to manufacturers or marketers. InventHelp Client Develops Lawn-Care Accessory (BRK-859) - September 20, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Pittsburgh, PA (PRWEB) September 19, 2014

"My husband was mowing the lawn, and as I watched him, I saw how much trouble he had emptying out the bag when it was full of debris," said an inventor from Trussville, Ala. "This inspired me to come up with a better way to get rid of lawn clippings."

She developed the DISPOSABLE PLASTIC LAWN BAG to make it easier to dispose of lawn clippings. The accessory reduces the stress and strain normally involved in emptying a full lawn-mower bag. This eliminates hassles and frustrations, and saves time and effort. Furthermore, the invention is adaptable for use with both walk-behind and ride-on mowers.

The original design was submitted to the Birmingham office of InventHelp. It is currently available for licensing or sale to manufacturers or marketers.
