Mathis works as personal property assistant - March 1, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

As many homeowners can attest to, home ownership can often feel like a full-time job. From mowing the lawn to keeping the interior clean, it requires daily maintenance. Now imagine the work that goes into maintaining a larger home or an estate property. This is where the services of Mathis Estates can help.

There is a lot that goes into home ownership, and just like we maintain our cars to keep them at peak performance the same goes for our homes, said Stephanie Mathis, owner of Mathis Estates.

Some individuals are extremely busy and they are traveling, or perhaps they have a second home so I would be that person that would take care of their property for them serving as a personal property assistant doing all the preventative maintenance.

While most property managers deal with renters, whether long-term or vacation rentals, Mathis said her boutique property management company is exclusively for homeowners and their primary residence, second homes, vineyard estates or even corporate retreats.

When I first meet with a client, we tour their property and talk about how I can make their life easier, she said. I can do as little or as much as required or the client needs.

Mathis said her range of services covers day-to-day maintenance of properties from landscaping, indoor plant service and pest control to complex home automation systems and roof upkeep, to name a few, but her company can also serve her clients as a concierge.

I can provide arrival services to prepare a home for when clients are coming into town to their second home, she said. Or, perhaps they need their wine club shipment picked up or reservation made to their favorite restaurant. Im here to provide them peace of mind so that they know their home is being taken care of and to free up their time so that they can simply enjoy their properties.

With a background not only in property management but also construction management, Mathis said she can help clients with the loved but also much dreaded home renovations.

I can manage the renovation for my clients. Lets say they want to redo their kitchen, add entertaining space to their backyard or even renovate their master bathroom; Im very well versed and have a long history of working with architects, designers and contractors, and can manage these types of projects from start to finish, said Mathis. So, instead of having to deal with all those vendors individually, I would relieve my client from all the tedious points in between and they could just deal with me one on one.

Having been involved in high-end property management, commercial and residential, for more than 15 years, Mathis said now was the right time to set up her own company.

Ypsilanti Township to set new lawn mowing fees that 'sting' absentee property owners - March 1, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Last year, Ypsilanti Township ordered 563 lawns mowed on vacant properties at a cost of $29,552 to taxpayers.

It charged the property owners - mostly banks and out-of-town absentee individuals - around $5 per lawn, leaving residents to pay for a significant chunk of the cost.

With fees that low, officials say it's common for property owners to choose to let the township pay for mowing because it's cheaper.

But proposed new rates could curb that practice and motivate property owners to mow their lawns.

Mike Radzik, the township's director of the office of community standards, offered the Ypsilanti Township Board of Trustees an ordinance amendment that would change the rate property owners pay to $35 per mowing, which he said was closer to the average cost.

But Trustee Mike Martin said that didn't go far enough.

"I don't know why we should be benevolent. I think we should (set the rate) to the point that it stings a little bit. Why not make it egregious enough that they flinch when they see that bill?" he asked.

Radzik said he would take another look at the fee and come back with a figure that covers all the cost of mowing, though no punitive costs would be included.

If approved, the ordinance amendment wouldn't impact homeowners who live in a house and aren't mowing their lawns.

Township lawns must be kept under eight inches, and ordinance officers typically write owners of an occupied house a notice of violation that's essentially a warning to mow the lawn.

Getting to the Root of Lawn Growth: The Grounds Guys Offers Tips on Dethatching and Aeration of Lawns - February 24, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

WACO, Texas (PRWEB) February 23, 2015

Over time, little bits and pieces of grass die and gather just above the soil causing thatch to build up on lawns. In the same way, foot traffic on a lawn compacts the surface and hardens the upper inches of soil, limiting lawn growth. According to the experts at The Grounds Guys, dethatching and aeration can alleviate these issues and help a lawn flourish.

Thatch, a thick, interwoven mat of living and dead materials, accumulates on the surface of the soil when grass grows faster than it decomposes. It is beneficial to lawns in small amounts, however, if thatch builds up on a lawn, it can form a barrier that prevents moisture and air from reaching a lawns roots. This can hamper lawn growth and increase risk for pests and diseases.

Compacted soil a term describing ground where the soil is pressed tightly together occurs slowly over time after pressure from walking on the lawn. The roots and water both struggle to penetrate the compacted soil, often resulting in patches of dead, brown lawn. Aeration, the process of adding small holes to the soil that allow air, water and nutrients to reach a lawns roots, can help.

Here are basic tips about dethatching and aeration from the experts at The Grounds Guys:

    Dethatching

    Aeration

The Grounds Guys dethatching and aeration services can help breathe new life into your lawn by providing better air and water absorption into the soil. For more information on dethatching and aeration, give their team of experts a call at 1-888-992-4251 or visit GroundsGuys.com.

    Speak Out! February 18-23, 2015 - February 21, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

The following Speak Out! messages appear in February 18-23, 2015 editions of the Journal & Topics Newspapers.

Randhurst tougher to travel than Circle?

I disagree with the Speak Out message last week that downplayed the hazard of trying to drive through Randhurst Village and stated that it is not a corn maze. Since the redevelopment of the mall, I have personally observed a few car accidents there and some near-accidents. In my opinion, trying to drive through the circuitous traffic patterns at Randhurst Village is every bit the hazard as trying to drive though Cumberland Circle, and possibly even more so given the added element of pedestrian traffic at the mall.

    Appreciates aldermans efforts

Thank you Alderman Sayad for your financial help at Brentwood School. It is really appreciated.

Wants to know more about candidate

Who is this gentleman running for alderman in the 4th ward? A person came to my door and handed me his flyer, what is his political experience? How can I vote for him?

(Ed. Note: Well, theres two gentlemen. Mark Setzer, the challenger, and Dick Sayad, the 4th wards current alderman.)

    No degree? So what?

I see the liberal news media is whining that Scott Walker has no college degree. Who cares? Both G.W. Bush and B.H. Obama have degrees but no common sense and both arent too smart. Thumbs up to Scott Walker.

Minutes in Motion aims to attract 5,000 exercise participants - February 20, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Hope springs eternal for Linda Larson, coordinator of Gundersen Health Systems ninth annual Minutes in Motion activity challenge, who aspires to break through the elusive ceiling of 5,000 participants.

We were close last year, so my goal still is to break that ceiling of 5,000, said Larson, a wellness education specialist and coach at Gundersen.

Last years challenge, which enlists people to do at least 30 minutes of exercise a day for six weeks, drew 4,761 registrants, a record that nudged the previous years tally of 4,707.

Larson hosted a luncheon of the sponsors Friday in advance of the registrations opening Monday. The challenge begins March 23 and ends May 3.

Its a great way to kick off spring, Larson said. In our climate, we tend to be more sedentary during the winter months.

The exercise methods dont have to be complicated, she said, adding, You can pick activities that work for you such as walking, jogging, gardening, shoveling snow or, later in spring, mowing the lawn.

The free program can be done individually or in groups, and last years effort included 111 Coulee Region businesses and 29 schools that enlisted employees and staffers, Larson said.

Of the 4,761 who registered last year, 3,066 reported logging a total of more than 5,315 million minutes the equivalent of 88,583.3 hours, or just over a decade of physical activity. Nearly 80 percent of the participants were female, Larson said.

It takes 1,260 minutes to meet the six-week goal. Last year, the average minutes reported was 1,653, and the median was 1,455, she said, with 41 percent of the participants meeting or exceeding 1,260.

The top three health improvements participants cited were more energy, noted by 51 percent; improved mood, by 48 percent , and increased endurance, mentioned by 39 percent. Nearly 40 percent reported losing weight, ranging from 1 to 20 pounds and averaging 5.8 pounds, Larson said.

Jack Philip Cary - February 19, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Jack Philip Cary was born in the town of Clinton to Philip and Josephine (Clark) Cary, March 22, 1927. He attended Clinton Center School, Westby High as a freshman and Cashton High School, graduating in 1945. Jack was a member of Dell United Methodist Church and served on the cemetery board for many years following his father and grandfather before him. He lived and worked with his parents and brother Jeralds family raising tobacco and mink, milking cows, and also worked a short time in Beloit. He also enjoyed working for the town of Clinton and Linds Hardware in Cashton, i.e. Cary Refrigeration Service.

Jack and Eunice worked together for a few years reading meters for Vernon Electric. He had completed a short course in artificial breeding through the University of Wisconsin in 1952. As a special uncle to nieces and nephews he stayed up with them playing Midnight Ghost Night. He also rode dirt bikes with them and they have many fond memories of their uncle. Special to him were trips made to California to see Danny, the west coast, Yellowstone and Ohio, all with his family.

Jack and Eunice Amelia Job (Winchel) were married July 6, 1989, with B.J. Talledge officiating at Norwalk United Methodist Church. Jacks sister, Mary Bufton, and sons hosted a reception at her home three days later on a very hot day for many relatives and friends. On July 6, 2014, they celebrated their 25th anniversary.

Jack and Eunice enjoyed living on their small farm in Amish community on Cary Road in the town of Clinton, working together gardening, mowing a large lawn, raising raspberries, strawberries and loved their cats. Jack and Eunice enjoyed family get-togethers and helping out Amish friends.

Together they found time to take a few trips, as well as attend many weddings and special events. The train trip to Boston in 1995 was special when David picked them up to spend time with his family in Maine and sightsee along the Atlantic Ocean.

Jack and Eunice accompanied Ron and Eileen to Colorado in the fall of 2001, visiting aunt Bertha and cousin Shirley (Bob). In 1999 and 2001, they accompanied Emily, Wally and Beth to visit Lione and family in Cache-Lawton, Okla., to see the Wichita Mountains, Fort Sill and the Holy City. (Jack could not attend Liones funeral in 2003). In 2005, they accompanied Ron and Eileen to Virginia to see Tricia graduate from law school and visit Williamsburg, as well as the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.

Jack had bypass and valve surgery in April 2002 following Eunices bypass surgery in June 2001. She had valve surgery in October 2004 also.

In April 2010, he needed surgery and was not able to return to the farm, so they moved to Crestview Apartments in Westby, where they met new friends and enjoyed their view of Main Street. Jack broke his shoulder and entered Norseland Nursing Home Sept. 23, 2014, and Eunice entered Norseland Nursing Home on Oct. 20, 2014, for therapy but her health declined. She passed away on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 27, 2014. It was a special time for them to hold hands (and kiss) during their nursing home stay.

Quote from Menno T. Hershbergers book, Memories, page 121, describes Jack: Jack Cary was always laid back and never seemed in a hurry. If everybody would have been as easy going as him, just think how nice it would be.

Jack saw Eunices faith in her Lord and Savior and wanted that assurance in his life: He settled it in his heart on Jan. 18, 2000, receiving and trusting Jesus.
