Is this the end of the 9-5 working day? - October 20, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Part of complete coverage on

By Brandon Clements and Monique Todd, for CNN

updated 11:05 AM EDT, Mon October 20, 2014

    STORY HIGHLIGHTS

Editor's note: Smart Business explores the ways companies are thinking smart to thrive in our digitized world.

(CNN) -- High level workers are looking for an alternative to the 9 to 5. Armed with years of experience, a growing number of professionals are looking to fashion project-based careers where the monotony of office life is exchanged for a varied and tailored work schedule. Business Talent Group, the brainchild of Jody Miller, works with nearly 300 companies to provide projects for its highly experienced pool of workers. Roping in opportunities from sectors such as Healthcare, Media and Manufacturing, the 'full-time' employee may be a role of the past.

CNN: What is the landscape like for employee recruitment?

Jody Miller: Typically, companies that have to get work done have two ways they look at it: one is that they usually hire full-time employees or they can go out to firms, consulting firms, outsourcing firms and have them do work. In fact, there's a growing population of people who prefer to work independently and create a project-based career, and those people are fantastic. Companies are now understanding that they can harness this group of talent to create exactly the team that they need to get their work done, and then disband that team and put another team in place.

CNN: Has there been a shift in how people view their work life?

JM: I think you're seeing two different things happening. On the talent side, we're seeing three demographic trends: we're seeing baby boomers retiring, we're seeing women increasingly joining the workforce, and we're seeing Millennials who want a different relationship between work and life. These three demographic trends are driving more and more people into the independent talent market.

All the best young players in the region have been identified and recruited into the new Hockey NSW Accelerated Athlete Program.

However, with so many talented young female and male players, those who dont make the AAP program are eligible for the NIAS hockey program, NIAS girls squad head coach Andrew Farmilo said.

He was on hand to run the selection trials at the Tamworth Hockey Complex on Saturday.

He had some 11 players trialling, with a number of others unable to attend for various reasons.

Well have 16 in the squad, Farmilo said.

Were not sure about the boys at this stage.

Local women hope cautionary tales will help others who hike alone - October 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Many local residents choose to hike alone, enjoying the meditative qualities of the desert landscape in solitude. With the canyons and mountains in Moabs backyard, local hikers regularly step out for a quick hike during their day. But even the most experienced and prepared of hikers can face surprising challenges in both the front and backcountry.

Four local residents recently sat down with The Times-Independent to share their stories of facing unexpected danger when hiking alone, and the strength it took for them to survive.

Remaining calm is crucial because its your survival, said Carol Almson, who has been hiking in the desert since 1980. You have to be self-aware. If theres some sort of danger you have to have a technique to protect yourself and not just give up.

Staying calm and not just giving up is exactly what each of these solo hikers did in order to skirt the dangerous situations they encountered.

Last year, Almson was walking alone on her favorite Bar M trail when she encountered a man who stalked and intimidated her. Knowing she must remain calm, Almson said she kept a quick pace and never broke into a run. Because of the mans large size and erratic behavior, she feared the pepper spray she carried wouldnt be effective.

I had all these things going through my mind as to what was happening and what could happen, she said.

Almson eventually outpaced her stalker on the trail and escaped danger. Yet she was so shaken from that incident that she stopped hiking for almost a year.

Im over 70 years old and Ive never been stymied like this by anything in my life. It just unnerved me, she said.

But with enough time, the images of the stalker began to fade, and Almson now says her reticence towards hiking alone is gone.

Women must treat the potential for abuse seriously but not allow themselves to be easily intimidated, she says. We who love the beauty and the spirituality of the Colorado plateau will not stay home.

Where Wall Street goes to play - October 16, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Catch Turney Duff on CNBC's "The Filthy Rich Guide," a show about how the .00001 percent spend their money. The show airs tonight at 10pm ET.

The plane touched down in San Jose, Costa Rica, in the late morning. After the usual baggage-claim torture, three of us smush into the back of a taxi. We're heading to Jaco. My friends Rex and John and I are meeting a bunch of female Wall Streeters for four daysjust a little getaway. Ninety minutes later we hop out of the cab and head straight to the swimming pool. We'll check in later. A 3-on-3 volleyball game is center stage in the shallow end as we walk up. Umbrella drinks are handed to us; we're still clad in our February New York City clothes. Then out of nowhere my friend John is bear hugged and tossed into the pool. It's going to be that kind of trip.

"You've got 5 minutes until the vans get here," one of the girls shouts to us.

Thirty minutes later, I'm hang gliding, soaring over incredible landscape. We were like my 9-year-old daughter and her friends trying to get in line for the roller coaster. I was first, but I worked on the buy side, and the client always goes first. Afterwards, on the way back to the resort, we're all giggling like school girls in the back of the van.

Tonight, there's a cocktail party and dinner, we might even work in a game of "I Never" or "Truth or Dare" if the evening starts slow. And from that point, we're free to do whatever we want. Some guys are heading over to the infamous Beatle Bar; rumor is that every woman in the place is on the clock. Others are planning on getting a good night's sleep because we have a full day tomorrow.

Breakfast. Pool. Beach. Lunch. Pool. Beach

Halfway through my massage in the spa, I'm thinking about our next activity. The trip is centered on chartering a 70-foot fishing boat; the world's fastest of its kind. I used to fish growing up in Maine, but it's been a while. We also need to make time for zip-lining in the rain forest, snorkeling and diving and, of course, the nightlife.

It's like Costa Rica has become our own private theme park.

Real estate 2020 building the future - October 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A paper released recently by international consultants PwC exploring probable changes in the commercial real estate landscape as the industry evolves to remain relevant in line with rapid economic and social change, gives food for thought for agencies in New Zealand.

The Real Estate 2020 building the future report talks about the commercial real estate built environment in the advanced economies of the world undergoing change in response to the well-identified drivers of technology, demographics and environmental issues.(See report attached)

Bayleys national commercial and industrial director John Church concurs that by 2020, the commercial and industrial property market in New Zealand will have a different vibe, with potentially a broader range of opportunities, new value drivers, and an evolving stock and buyer profile.

How the commercial and industrial property sector adapts to twists and turns in both the global and domestic investment environment will ultimately determine New Zealands appeal to investors and portfolio managers, Mr Church says.

We are fielding strong and intensified interest in our property market from offshore investors. New Zealands economic profile, political stability and perceived value-for-money property arena are not going unnoticed.

Every week we see evidence that global real estate trends are changing, whether were talking about a flow of investment money out of Asia, or confirmation that the Australian commercial property market is overheating as pointed out by the Australian Financial Review recently.

The global commercial and industrial property playing field is evolving and we need to be ahead of the curve.

PwC director Chris Money says New Zealand is not insulated from global trends and it cannot afford to be complacent about international commercial property dynamics.

New Zealand relies in part on global funding for debt and to a degree, equity and is increasingly a part of the global market, Mr Money says.

PwCs six core real estate investment predictions outlined in the Real Estate 2020 report are:

History of change at Addison Mizner-designed Memorial Park - October 13, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The march of time will mar any icon, be it of flesh and bones or concrete and rebar.

Memorial Fountain and Park long the stately postcard of Palm Beach is no exception.

Palm Beach Daily News publisher Oscar Davies proposed the park as a way to screen the fire bays fronting Town Hall and to honor town pioneers who made out-sized contributions to Palm Beachs development. Designed by Addison Mizner in 1929, the park has remained largely unchanged through the years.

The fountain will be reconstructed this season, and on Tuesday the Town Council will review a $3.3 million renovation plan for the park and streetscape. Town staff has broken the project into segments so the council could approval all of it or part of it.

Although the basic elements have remained the same, the park one visits today is not exactly as envisioned by Mizner more than 84 years ago. It has not been frozen in time, says longtime former town preservation consultant Jane Day.

The Australian pines, for example, that landscape architect Charles Perrochet had installed as a fountain backdrop and to further screen the fire bays on the north side of Town Hall were replaced early on by palm trees. Landscaping on each side of the reflecting pool has changed a number of times. Deteriorating portions of the fountain were repaired in 1975 and 1988.

The biggest change occurred in 1985, when curved monument walls designed by architect Ames Bennett were added to the parks north end.

The purpose of that was to expand the idea of a memorial, Day said.

The walls allowed space to honor more people. Today, inscribed on those wings are the names of all town residents who served in any war and the names of firefighters and police officers who died in the line of duty. The list includes President John F. Kennedy, who served in the Navy during World War II.

In 1991, the state gave the town a grant to repair and renovate the aging park. During that project, the main bowl of the fountain was patched, the depth of the reflecting pond was reduced to improve safety and the original tile from Mizner Industries was removed, Day said.
