Three Chch summer pools make a comeback - November 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

This summers pool party season will be the biggest in years, with three favourites - Waltham Pool, Lytteltons Norman Kirk Memorial Pool and the Scarborough paddling pool - opening for the first time since the 2011 earthquakes.

These pools will join Jellie Park, Halswell and Templeton as the 2014/15 summer pool season hits. Festivities officially begin on Saturday 15 November with the opening of the Jellie Park and Halswell pools, with Templeton Pool following on Saturday 6 December.

Christchurch City Council Recreation and Sports Unit Manager John Filsell says theres extra cause for celebration this year.

"The Councils Facilities Rebuild team has pushed hard to reopen these three biggies in time for the summer season, so were thrilled to be able to include Waltham and Lyttelton pools in the party season. Theyll be a bit of a present to these communities that have been without for nearly four years, and the welcome-back parties are a thank-you for their patience and support."

Show Weekend sees the citys paddling pools opening for the summer, including New Brighton Whale Pool, Christchurch Botanic Gardens, Abberley Park, Edgar MacIntosh Park, Spencer Park and Woodham Park. The paddling pool at Scarborough will follow before Christmas.

Sponsors MORE FM and Streets will be at each party with giveaways, competitions and prizes to keep the kids entertained. Details of all the summer pool parties will be broadcast on MORE FM (92.1FM).

    Norman Kirk Memorial Pool

The anticipated December opening date for Lytteltons Norman Kirk Memorial Pool has been revised to 23 January 2015. The delay has been due to more-complex-than-expected ground conditions, with 400 cubic metres of ground needing to be dug out and replaced. The Lyttelton Lives On pool party will be held on Saturday 28 February.

SAP spends P170 million for 3rd office in PH at Ortigas center - November 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Noting the countrys resurgent ICT landscape and rich talent pool, German software behemoth SAP has invested 3 million Euros (about P170 million) to open its third office in the Philippines and 60th office in the Asia Pacific region.

Adaire Fox-Martin, president of SAP Asia Pacific Japan, speaks during the unveiling

The new facility, located at the Cyberscape Beta building in Ortigas complex in Pasig City, was inaugurated on Friday, Nov. 7, by top SAP regional executives and government officials.

The company said the new office, which will occupy two floors of the building, will serve as the hub of SAP shared services team for sales and finance.

Part of the services team for sales is an initiative called Project Nucleus where SAP will set up a call center in the area to support sales requirements across Asia.

The project, which involves the Philippines and India, aims to double the staff strength by next year. Currently, the new Ortigas hub has about 800 local employees.

As for the services team for finance, the company disclosed that the new office will serve as the back office finance support for SAP companies around the world.

The software firm, which has been operating in the Philippines for the last 19 years, has two existing offices in the country one is in the Fort Global City that caters to the domestic market and another in Ortigas which manages the companys HR consulting and shared services for SAP and customers globally.

Expansion of cell tower equipment at Oakview Community Pool raises concerns — Gazette.Net - November 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Oakview community pool is closed. Parents are worried that standing water in the large pool might be a safety hazard for children at Roscoe Nix Elementary School.

A community pools dilapidated appearance is worrying Silver Spring residents who believe its a safety hazard for children at a nearby elementary school.

Now a diesel generator will be placed on the the Oakview pool property, which is across from the Roscoe Nix Elementary School parking lot.

The Montgomery Board of Appeals is debating Verizons request to expand the cell tower equipment compound at 1101 Corliss St. in Silver Spring from 843 to 1,473 square feet. A public hearing is scheduled for Nov. 12.

The primary concern is whether Verizons request interferes with school traffic.

If approved, the diesel fuel generator would move across the back of the elementary school parking lot through a new access gate, where the larger and adjacent kiddy pools are located.

Because of its proximity to the school, Janis Zink Sartucci of the Parents Coalition of Montgomery County, who is opposed to the expansion, believes it heightens commercial traffic near the school. Its particularly dangerous if the gate at the back of the pool is left unlocked, she said.

My guess is it can be unlocked at any time. Its just a deadbolt, she said. A kid comes in and then they could climb out and leave and theyve unlocked the door, with no maintenance of the pool area, with no one checking daily that door can be unlocked today.

The cell tower equipment expansion and the lack of maintenance is an ongoing problem that the Parents Coalition hopes the board of appeals will address.

L.E.S. residents mutiny over Pier 42 kayak plan - November 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

BY DUSICA SUE MALESEVIC | Pier 42 plans presented at a recent Community Board 3 meeting roused anger from Lower East Side residents who want a pool and not a proposed area for kayaking.

After Noriko Maeda of Mathews Nielsen Landscape Architects gave her presentation of the trees, shrubs and plants that may populate the waterfront for the projects phase one, residents expressed their unhappiness with a proposed kayak area.

We are a community that is tired of being disengaged, disenfranchised by everyone else and being ignored, Nancy Ortiz, president of the Vladeck Houses Resident Association declared at C.B. 3s Parks, Recreation, Cultural Affairs, Landmarks & Waterfront Committee on Oct. 21.

This is the first time we are seeing this, she said. Kayaking does not fit the demographics of our community.

Pier 42, between Gouverneur and Jackson Sts., received more than $10 million in funding from the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation in March 2012. Lawrence Mauro, the Parks Departments program manager for Lower Manhattan projects, said there has been extensive community outreach.

Weve handled this progressively, step by step, Mauro said. There have been several meetings with C.B. 3 for both direction and approval, he said.

Ortiz said later in a phone interview that with all the projects and meetings going on in the Lower East Side, including about Pier 42, the Big U, and the general waterfront plan, it is hard to keep track. But one thing is clear: The community does not want a kayaking area.

One of the reasons Parks wants a protected area for teaching kids to kayak, Mauro said, is to expose them to the water during educational programs.

They could learn about the river, learn about the ecology, learn about whats in the river in a supervised way, he said.

C.B. 3 has already approved the Pier 42 master plan. Mauro said that the committee was only voting on phase one, which currently does not include any of the proposed amenities, such as a playground, concession stand, an area where residents could watch movies, roller-skating rink and the kayaking area.

Sydney's largest pool - November 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Video will begin in 5 seconds.

Sydney's beaches and harbourside rock pools inspired the design of the proposed Green Square swimming pool. Vision: City of Sydney.

An emerging Sydney architect has won a large international competition with his design for the city's newest and largest pool in the Green Square development.

Judges selected a design by local Andrew Burges from a global field of nearly 150 designs for the City of Sydney project which has a budget expected to reach $50 million.

The Gunyama Park and Aquatic Centre will cover 16,500 square metres with 2630 square metres of swimming space - 40 per cent more than the Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre, currently the city's largest pool.

Chairman of the jury, Melbourne architect Carey Lyon, praised the artful combination of a landscaped park with an aquatic centre so close to the city centre.

"It cleverly integrated the idea of a park with a building that was the strong view of the judges," Mr Lyon said.

Judges were also impressed by the inclusion of a 50-metre lap pool inside a larger pool for recreational swimmers, in a design they said reminded them of Sydney's famous ocean swimming spots such as the Bronte baths.

All five finalists chosen in June were from Sydney, but the judges said there was no chance this was home-town favouritism.
