South Africa is a botanical wonderland. It is incredibly lush and home to more plant species than anywhere else on Earth.
From the giant protea blossoms that adorn exotic flower arrangements around the world (yet will grow naturally almost no place else) to beautiful osteospermums that bloom in a gorgeous array of blues and purples, South Africa is a plant-lovers paradise.
Norma Glass has been a Dallas resident for almost 30 years, but she missed the vibrant, rich landscape of her homeland. This spring, Glass and her landscape architect completed a backyard makeover to create a bright, welcoming, relaxing retreat at her Preston Hollow house.
Not all is as it seems. Mixed with the lush foliage and flowers are features that would raise the eyebrows of traditional gardeners. Her shrub beds are filled with azaleas, rose of Sharon, Knock Out roses, nandina, needle palm, pittosporum, Japanese aralia and holly fern. These standard choices surround a grassy area planted not with St. Augustine, but with artificial turf.
In summer, decorative ceramic pots spill over with lush variegated ivy, Asian jasmine, Persian shield and bromeliads. Draping the wooden walls surrounding the backyard are fake ivy trellises attached by Glass with a staple gun.
Theres so much real with a little bit of faux, and I think it blends beautifully. If you dont like it, dont do it. But we love it, Glass says.
Glass, 57, is a neurologist who works in the same office as her husband Jeffrey, 60, a psychologist. They moved to Dallas in 1983, and she became a somewhat frustrated Texas gardener. Having color in the landscape all year long eluded her, so she called on landscape architect Harold Leidner of Carrollton to address the issue with hardscape features.
You can create colors with other things like pots or throw pillows or statuary pieces, and you can embrace things that may not be mainstream, Glass says. You open yourself up to so much more when youre not so rigid and set in your ways.
The kidney-shaped pool is trimmed with blue tile and surrounded by red ceramic pots. A long, serpentine concrete bench is topped with custom cushions. Under a magnificent red oak is a wrought-iron gazebo planted with wisteria.
This spot, which Glass calls her reflection place, is bound on one side by more red pots planted in summer with white caladiums. On the other side is a waterfall and pond constructed of natural stone.

PARKERSBURG -Landscape architect students from WVU gave officials a look at some future possibilities for land use in south Parkersburg.
The students were charged with designing a conceptual plan for land use incorporating the south Parkersburg branch of the Wood County library, Blizzard Park and fire station 5.
Kathryn Wittner, professor of the landscape architecture at WVU, said the city-owned property in south Parkersburg was a good case study for her students because it has several uses. Students were also given the area because of the multiple uses of space and the greenspace component.
Photo by Jody Murphy WVU landscape architecture student Lilly Clift and Matt Gerhart discuss their conceptual design for the land in south Parkersburg with Tres Ross, executive director of the Ross Foundation, and former Parkersburg fire Chief Eric Chichester.
Photo by Jody Murphy Parkersburg firefighter Jeff Burdette listens to WVU student Jim Haggar explain his conceptual design for property that includes Station 5.
"Given the site's topography, the students were asked to consider whether or not a joint facility would make sense," said Rickie Yeager, city planning administrator. "Joint facilities are increasingly popular because the users can share costs."
Twenty-four juniors from WVU's School of Landscape Architecture presented conceptual drawings of the space to officials Monday at the City Building.
Students have spent several weeks coming up with a conceptual drawing for land space.
Councilman John Rockhold marveled at the varying concepts.
"There are 24 kids and 24 different ideas. Not one is alike," he said.

ESCONDIDO The San Diego Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects awarded a $5,000 grant to enhance the San Dieguito River Valley Conservancys Sikes Adobe Historic Farmstead site.
A master plan was drawn up pro bono to outline improvements at the historic farmstead in Escondido, one of only a few adobes in the area dating back to the 1870s.
Improvements include building a timber barn for community events that historically recreates what was on the site and building trail head parking with ADA access, shade canopies and picnic tables along with amenities such as a trail bridge and signs for the existing Coast to Crest Trail.
The plan includes planting native trees and shrubs and installing a drip irrigation system for the recently completed peach orchard, planted as part of an Eagle Scout project. Plans also call for growing native grapes propagated from cuttings of 1870s historic vines.
In-Site Landscape Architectures Tim Jachlewski, a licensed landscape architect, worked closely on the master plan with the Sikes museum manager, Anne Cooper, and the San Dieguito River Park Joint Powers Authority.
The goal is to increase the historic ambiance and replace bare ground and weed-infested areas with native plants and a community garden. The project, which is scheduled to start early next year, will raise awareness about the work of landscape architects.
The farmhouse, a San Diego historical landmark and a State Point of Historical Interest, was restored in 2004. The wooden farmhouse burned during the 2007 Witch Creek Fires, leaving only the adobe walls. The San Dieguito River Park Joint Powers Authority and San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy restored the farmhouse and reopened the museum in 2010. Later the adobe was recognized with a Phoenix Award by San Diego-based Save Our Heritage Organisation.

Justin Martin: #39;Genius of Place: the Life of Frederick Law Olmsted #39;
Saratoga Springs History Museum, Solomon Trust Lecture, October 25, 2012: Most people have heard of Central Park and Prospect Park in New York City, Congress Park in Saratoga Springs, Stanford University in California, the Back Bay Fens and Franklin Park in Boston, and Capitol Grounds in Washington DC -- but few can identify Frederick Law Olmsted as the man behind some of America #39;s most iconic public spaces. Of those who do know Olmsted, even fewer know him as anything other than a landscape architect. In Genius of Place: The Life of Frederick Law Olmsted, Justin Martin explores Olmsted #39;s roots as a reformer. As a journalist, Olmsted championed the abolitionist cause to Northern and British audiences in the 1850s and 60s, exposing the evils of slavery; as an environmentalist, he created public spaces that preserved the already-existing endangered natural world. Olmsted #39;s conservation efforts are still felt today in places like Niagara Falls and Yosemite. Genius of Place also delves into Olmsted #39;s personal life. Despite previous portrayals of Olmsted as a devoted family man with a tranquil life, author Justin Martin exposes the tensions of Olmsted #39;s marriage and familial relationships, as well as Olmsted #39;s struggle with illness and personal tragedy, to paint a comprehensive picture of one of the most influential people of the nineteenth century. Justin Martin is the author of three biographies including works on Alan Greenspan and Ralph Nader. The Greenspan biography was ...From:saratogaNYmuseumViews:2 0ratingsTime:58:06More inEducation

September 11 Memorial
The National September 11 Memorial is a tribute of remembrance and honor to the nearly 3000 people killed in the terror attacks of September 11, 2001 at the World Trade Center site, near Shanksville, Pa., and at the Pentagon, as well as the six people killed in the World Trade Center bombing in February 1993. The Memorial #39;s twin reflecting pools are each nearly an acre in size and feature the largest manmade waterfalls in the North America. The pools sit within the footprints where the Twin Towers once stood. Architect Michael Arad and landscape architect Peter Walker created the Memorial design selected from a global design competition that included more than 5200 entries from 63 nations. The names of every person who died in the 2001 and 1993 attacks are inscribed into bronze panels edging the Memorial pools, a powerful reminder of the largest loss of life resulting from a foreign attack on American soil and the greatest single loss of rescue personnel in American history. From:Comprimido PTViews:0 0ratingsTime:01:08More inTravel Events
