Joseph Nicoletti Lecture Series #2 The Lecture
The Toll Bridge Oversight Program Committee hosted the second panel of the Joseph P. Nicoletti Lecture Series about the San Francisco -- Oakland Bay Bridge. Media, along with the public, were invited to the Bay Theater to meet the designers and architects behind this iconic structure. Clive Endress, Caltrans Senior Landscape Architect, Michael Fitzpatrick, TY Lin International Bridge Architect, and Donald MacDonald, Principal Architect of Donald Macdonald Architects, discussed the design concept behind California #39;s largest public works project. The lecture series is named for a Bay Area dean of seismic engineering, Joseph P. Nicoletti, who recently stepped down from several earthquake advisory panels after more than 25 years of public service and more than 40 years in the private sector as a seismic engineer and executive. Nicoletti served on the Caltrans Seismic Advisory Board, an elite panel consisting of eight external engineering and scientific experts in the field of earthquake engineering, starting at its inception in 1990, as well as on the equally esteemed Toll Bridge Seismic Safety Peer Review Panel. From:Mark JonesViews:8 0ratingsTime:01:09:25More inTravel Events

A Unique Sense of Place: Mike Allmendinger at TEDxFargo City 2.0 – Video - December 2, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

A Unique Sense of Place: Mike Allmendinger at TEDxFargo City 2.0
Landscape Architects bring a unique and creative vision when designing spaces. Their visions tend to dig further into existing context to blend with the inherent sense of place. The term sense of place is defined differently and used in many different ways by many different people. It is often tied to the geographic characteristics of a city, state, or entire regions. Places that have a strong sense of place, have a strong identity and character that is defined by cultural features and is shaped by the people who occupy the place. Mike Allmendinger has an extensive history with landscape architecture, design and construction. Growing up in a family-owned landscape construction business in Wahpeton, ND, Mike was exposed to the potential of Landscape Architecture in this region, which led him to enroll at North Dakota State University. In 2003, Mike opened Land Elements, a Landscape Architecture firm, where he assists clients in realizing their goals, all while creating a unique sense of place. Besides being a Landscape Architect, he is also the General Manager of Kilbourne Group, a real estate development company. Mike also serves on the Alumni Board for the Architecture and Landscape Architecture Department at North Dakota State University. In thespirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and ...From:TEDxTalksViews:168 4ratingsTime:11:06More inEducation

Fletcher Steele and Naumkeag: A Playground of the Imagination – Video - December 2, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Fletcher Steele and Naumkeag: A Playground of the Imagination
Between 1926 and 1955, landscape architect Fletcher Steele and his client Mabel Choate created many new gardens for Naumkeag, the Choate family summer estate in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. The new designs respected the layout of earlier gardens created c. 1885 by Nathan Barrett for the original Stanford White "cottage." A vibrant relationship developed between Steele and Choate, whose work began with Naumkeag #39;s Afternoon Garden and soon progressed to other features in the landscape: the South Lawn, Chinese Temple Garden, Blue Steps, and Rose Garden. Each of these designs reflected the tempo of its time and also connected visitors to the beauty of the Berkshire Mountains, visible from any part of the landscape. It is a magical site, truly a playground of the imagination. This film was made possible by a generous gift from the Viburnum Trilobum Fund of the New York Community Trust, advised by Nancy R. Turner. All films in the series are created in association with Hott Productions of Florentine Films.
