Site clearing brings new Urangan shopping centre closer - January 30, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

LAND is being cleared to make way for the development of a new shopping centre including Aldi and McDonald's in Urangan.

Urban Planet principal Ward Veitch said the land on Boat Harbour Dr was cleared in preparation for construction.

"Vegetation removal has started," Mr Veitch said.

"We're getting the land ready for development."

Mr Veitch's client Lindsay Kayne has been working on the Urangan project since 2006.

He said he decided against searching for other possible tenants until the land clearing had begun and had hopes to include some medical facilities at the centre.

"We'll start talking with other fast food companies now but when it comes to medical tenants it's a little more complicated," he said.

"We'd like to see a medical centre with up to eight doctors, radiology and pathology."

Although there has been a long wait to erect the new centre, Mr Veitch is expecting the centre to be up and running by 2017.

"We're expecting it all to be done in the next 12 to 18 months," he said.

Ward of the Woods: Burton's Halifax County wildlife refuge - January 30, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    HALIFAX CO., Va. -

It smells of burning wood, fresh cut pine, fresh air, and dirt on a rare warm day in January.

On thousands of acres of land, one lifelong farmer and nature lover is clearing land by burning brush for a new forest, part of a habitat enhancement project soon to be full of trees and plenty of food for birds and four-legged creatures that will soon call this place home.

"It's really part of who I am," said Ward Burton.

It's not the atmosphere you'd think to find former NASCAR driver Ward Burton, but this peaceful refuge is where he spends all of his time, a far cry from a noisy racetrack.

Burton went pro in the early nineties with five career wins in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series. In 2002 he won the sport's premier event, the Daytona 500.

He never backed off the throttle just stepped into a whole different make and model off the beaten path. His vehicle of choice for leisure is now a golf cart.

"Even when I was racing I always longed to be back, back here," Burton said.

Burton grew up in rural Halifax County, near South Boston, and it's a place he never wants to leave.

"Now that we're going to get sunlight to the canopy in there that will start growing up with vegetation for all small game as well as big game. Everything out here has got a plan," Burton said.

Appoint Kelantan Orang Asli as rangers - January 27, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    January 27, 2015

Orang Asli can monitor illegal logging and land clearing said to be a primary factor in the massive floods in Kelantan.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Orang Asli community in Kelantan should be appointed as honorary or volunteer rangers to monitor illegal logging and illegal land clearing in the state.

Minister in the Prime Ministers Department Shahidan Kassim said the government could help the community by opening nurseries to provide them some additional income.

We employ the Orang Asli to plant trees and help with the surveillance and monitoring of illegal logging and land clearing, he told reporters after launching the Undergraduates Parliamentary Session organised by the Malaysian Council of Former Elected Representatives (Mubarak) at Parliament House yesterday.

Mubarak president Abdul Aziz Rahman was also present at the event.

The two-day session co-organised by Mubarak, International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM) and the Education Ministry was chaired by Dewan Rakyat Speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia.

Excessive illegal logging and land clearing activities were said to be among the primary factors contributing towards the massive floods in Kelantan.

Soldiers, including one ex-con, arrested over land-clearing allegation - January 27, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Three soldiers, one of whom was previously implicated in the murder of an environmental official, were arrested last week in Preah Sihanouk province for allegedly clearing an area of protected forest land in Ream National Park, officials said yesterday.

Provincial deputy prosecutor Ros Saram said that two of the soldiers were arrested on Thursday alongside the operator of an excavator they were using to clear the land.

The following day, a third soldier, Thorn Virak, was arrested.

The driver and three soldiers were charged with clearing the forest land in Ream National Park without permission and they were detained in the [provincial] prison to await trial, Saram said.

The quartet was charged under Article 56 and 62 of the Protected Areas Law, he added.

When asked about details of the four detainees, Saram said that the vehicle operator was a normal villager, while the two arrested alongside him were serving in the military in Preah Sihanouk.

Virak, he said, had military fatigues and had confessed to being a soldier under questioning.

If the claims of being a soldier turned out to be false, he would face additional charges, Sarom added.

Virak previously spent time in prison after he was convicted in July 2009 of supplying the gun used to murder Nov Kim, an environmental official stationed in the park, earlier that year.

The killing took place after Kim detained Virak and four other men on suspicion of illegal logging. Virak was sentenced to one year in prison and fined 500,000 riel (about $123).

Land Clearing Work Continues for New Albemarle Shopping Center - January 26, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va (WVIR) - Bulldozers are clearing trees and moving dirt on 73-acres just outside Charlottesville city limits, making way for a new shopping center.

The 5th Street Station is expected to bring more than 500 jobs to Albemarle County.

Everyone is working well together; the county, the developer, the shopping store management. And we're trying to stay in touch and make sure this project comes out as good as it could possibly come out, said Albemarle Co. Board of Supervisor Chair Jane Dittmar.

Currently, crews are clearing land and putting in underground infrastructure. By the fall of 2016, a Wegmans grocery store will be open. Field and Stream, Dick's Sporting Goods, Petsmart and Panera Bread will follow soon after.

The whole south side of the county is underserved for shopping. This is going to be great for them. It saves them time. It saves them transportation costs, said Albemarle Co. Supervisor Liz Palmer.

Riverbend Development is now working on the second phase of leasing retail space for the shopping center.

They have about 75,000 square feet in negotiations, so we're looking forward to finding out who might be joining the original tenants fairly soon, Dittmar said.

A road connecting Avon Street and 5th Street is expected to be completed by the year as well.

Even people that are not interested in necessarily, oh wow great shopping' and new service businesses are looking forward to easy access between those two roads, said Dittmar

Supervisor Palmer says tax revenue from the shopping center will allow the county to make other improvements in that area.

Riverslea protest heats up - January 23, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Riverslea protest heats up

Concerned Riverslea residents staged a protest at Darch Brook this morning to stop tree clearing and call for more information on private subdivision plans.

Margaret River resident Jim Matan said the group wanted the clearing stopped until more information had been given on plans by developer Walsec to clear land for 70 new houses.

He said the group requested the workers hold off until such time as we can totally ascertain the legality of what theyre doing.

Mr Matan said protestors were at the site at 8am for about an hour before police asked them to leave. Resident Trudy Hayman said members of the group was concerned they had not been consulted before the clearing.

We had questions for them regarding the legality of their operations, she said.

Mrs Hayman said the group had inquired about the developers permission to clear the site, which was granted in 2002.

Were following up on a few avenues in relation to their permits to clear the land, Mrs Hayman said.

We just want to know all the boxes have been ticked.

Mrs Hayman said the developers were bulldozing trees like they were matchsticks.
