DEVELOPMENT: Be rational about land clearing - June 4, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

04 June 2013| last updated at 11:11PM By T.K. Chang, Petaling Jaya, Selangor

There are no two ways about it. Land has to be utilised for development, whether for agriculture, infrastructure or property. So long as the clearing of land is carried out responsibly and according to engineering standards, it should not be labelled as "rape".

How else could development be carried out otherwise?

The self-styled nature lovers and environmentalists are so passionate about saving the trees and environment, yet they are the same people complaining about poor infrastructure, lack of affordable housing and pricey houses, poor economic growth and inadequate opportunities for employment and for business development.

Land clearing is necessary for economic development, and not all of it is illegal, nor translates into the destruction of nature.

I hope the press will not continue with one-sided lambasting of land clearing. The press has to educate the people that there needs to be a balance between utilisation and preservation of land.

It would be most enlightening to hear from more knowledgeable people about how to develop the country, house the people and create employment opportunities without clearing any land and cutting down some trees. I wait with bated breath to be educated.

If people want houses, then land clearing is necessary.

    20. New Kedah government stops two land clearing projects - June 3, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

LANGKAWI: The Kedah Government has ordered a temporary stop on land clearing activities following public complaints, said Mentri Besar Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir.

He said two land clearing projects, implemented by the previous state administration, have been stopped so far.

One land clearing was for an agro-tourism project near the Pedu dam while the other is the Ladang Rakyat project at Gunung Inas, Baling.

Mukhriz said the orders to stop were issued on May 18.

He added that a review of both projects was being made and the state government would come out with a solution to protect the safety of the people and the environment.

The state will not hesitate to terminate any logging concession if it flouts procedures, even the smallest requirement, he said.

The state government is acting on complaints from villagers that the two projects affected their supply of clean water, he told reporters here yesterday, after witnessing the signing of an agreement between the Lang-kawi Development Authority and Pekan Artisan Sdn Bhd for two tourism projects on the island.

Regarding his planned state budget for next year, Mukhriz said it would be a realistic budget based on the states ability.

The revenue projected by the previous state government was far-fetched ... about RM20mil from the RM640mil in projected revenue to be derived from the sale of raw water to Penang ... in which there has been no progress, he said.

Mukhriz added, however, that his state government intended to go ahead with the proposal to charge Penang for raw water.

Queensland changes land clearing laws - May 22, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Controversial changes to Queensland's land clearing laws have passed state parliament.

The Newman government passed the changes on Tuesday evening which allow farmers to graze starving cattle in five national parks and eight reserves until the end of 2013, and if needed, beyond.

Farmers will also be able to clear their land without permits for routine management, such as building fences.

Remnant forest can also be cleared if farmers can prove it's for a high-value agriculture area.

Natural Resources Minister Andrew Cripps says the reforms will give landholders more control over their land and allow them to sustainably grow their farm businesses.

'Landholders can get on with the job of providing food and fibre for Queenslanders and international markets,' he said in a statement.

Conservationists and a group of 25 leading Queensland scientists warned against the changes, saying it would lead to more extinctions and be devastating for biodiversity.

WWF Australia CEO Dermot O'Gorman says the changes amount to 'one of the largest environmental rollbacks in Australian history' and Premier Campbell Newman has broken an election promise.

'By not intervening, the premier has acted against advice from Queensland's leading scientists,' Mr O'Gorman said in a statement.

'These amendments have stripped away protections for two million hectares of mature and recovering bushland.'

Protest against land clearing changes - May 21, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Conservationists have protested outside Queensland parliament over what they say is a broken promise not to relax tree clearing laws.

The state government is expected to pass amendments to vegetation management laws on Tuesday to allow farmers to clear their land without permits for routine management, such as building fences.

They won't be able to clear remanent forest, except when they have approval to establish a high-value agricultural area.

The government says the previous Labor government allowed the pendulum to swing too far towards extreme green policies and farmers support the changes.

But opposition environment spokeswoman Jackie Trad says millions of hectares of regrowth vegetation will be vulnerable to clearing.

She says Premier Campbell Newman promised twice not to change the laws.

"He is breaking an election promise and the people of Queensland will judge him harshly for that," Ms Trad said.

About 30 activists protested outside parliament house, many dressed in koala suits and holding placards reading: "No tree, no me".

The Wilderness Society's Tim Seelig said Queensland used to be the land clearing capital of Australia.

Pos Terisu Land Clearing Adheres To The Law – Pahang MB - May 20, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

KUANTAN, May 20 (Bernama) -- Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob has come to the defence of a land clearance on a 24ha site in Pos Terisu, Cameron Highlands, saying that it was being carried out in accordance with the law.

He said the land clearing was carried out after the Orang Asli Development Department (JAKOA) took over the land from Orang Asli in the area for an agricultural development.

"Those who feel that there was an abuse of power or a corrupt practice involved in the venture, please report it to MACC (Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission), instead of making wild accusations," he told reporters after announcing the state executive council's line-up in Kuantan, Monday.

He was commenting a newspaper report that another huge tract of virgin jungle was found stripped bare in Pos Terisu, Cameron Highlands to make way for more vegetable farms.

According to the report, a special task force to be set up under the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry would work with the Pahang government to tackle the widespread ravage of Cameron Highlands.

Adnan said a company had been engaged by JAKOA to carry out an agricultural project there to ensure that land development would be carried out systematically and avoid unorganised land clearing by Orang Asli.

"The company had been making payouts to 55 Orang Asli families involved in the venture yearly since 2008," he said, adding that each Orang Asli family was given RM800 in 2008, RM1,800 (2009), RM2,400 (2010) and RM4,000 (2011).
