In a statement here today, Sime Darby Berhad said Sime Darby Plantation has had several discussions both internally and with external stakeholders on recurring problems associated with traditional land clearing methods in Indonesia.
"Sime Darby Plantation recognises that current discussions are mainly about responsibility for land, and accountability for activities that occur therein," it said.
The company has also engaged with the natural resources and environment ministry to discuss the issues faced, with a view towards providing any and all assistance to the authorities in resolving the issues.
Sime Darby Plantation will maintain the current boundaries of its operating areas and will continue to work closely with the local authorities and educate local communities on sustainable farming practices.
"Sime Darby Plantation is willing to discuss this with the Indonesian authorities to seek an equitable solution to the problem," it said. -- BERNAMA

Sime Plantation seeks equitable solution on land clearing
KUALA LUMPUR: Sime Darby Bhd is willing to discuss the issues faced by its concession in Indonesia with the local authorities to find an amicable solution for land clearing methods.
The group was responding to several reports published recently on open burning in Indonesia that had caused the recent haze.
Some 14 companies had been identified and were being probed for open burning.
They include eight Malaysian-owned firms namely PT Langgam Inti Hiberida, PT Bumi Rakksa Sejati, PT Tunggal Mitra Plantation (PTTMP), PT Udaya Loh Dinawi, PT Adei Plantation, PT Jatim Jaya Perkasa, PT Multi Gambut Industri and PT Mustika Agro Lestari.
The group said in a statement yesterday that its unit Sime Darby Plantation had had several discussions internally and with external stakeholders on the repeat problems associated with traditional land-clearing methods in Indonesia.
"Sime Darby Plantation recognises that current discussions are mainly on responsibility for land and accountability for activities that occur therein," it added.
Sime Darby said in order to find a sustainable and long-term solution, it has engaged with the Malaysian Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to discuss the issues.
"This is in line with our recent call on June 28 for constructive dialogues between all relevant stakeholders to find a sustainable solution to the haze problem.
"There is a need to clearly demarcate areas under the control of a company and those occupied by local communities within a Licensed Concession Area," it said.
Sime Darby will maintain the current boundaries of its operating areas and continue to work closely with local authorities and educate local communities on sustainable farming practices, it added.

Sime Darby open to talks on land clearing methods
Bulldozers have started clearing the first block of what eventually will be 13,400ha of new farming land near Kununurra.
Chief executive of Chinese-backed company Kimberley Agricultural Investment (KAI), Jian Zhong Yin said the beginning of land clearing was a major milestone for the company.
"This is actually the foundation for the whole of our development work here," Mr Yin told _WestBusiness _.
The company plans to invest about $700 million in the East Kimberley farming region over the next five years.
KAI general manager Jim Engelke said the company was looking to initially grow sorghum for ethanol production, with a long-term view to growing sugar if economies of scale could be reached to make a Kununurra processing mill profitable.
"We need scale in a sugar industry to make it viable, so we're talking some years before a mill," Mr Engelke said. "The smallest mill we want to build is a 2 million tonne mill, so in rough area that's about 20,000ha."
Mr Engelke said the company would look to the 14,000ha of existing Ord farmland and at future developments in the Northern Territory to expand potential sugar-growing land.
The first 500ha is expected to be planted next year, with sorghum, maize or chia the most likely choices. As part of the deal with the State Government, KAI must begin farming progressively as land is cleared.
Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said the Ord land clearing showed northern Australia had a strong farming future.
"There are plenty of naysayers who say we shouldn't be developing the north of Australia, they probably need to come to Kununurra and see it actually happening," Mr Grylls said.
