Consumer Reports: Kitchen trends focus on colors, entertaining - January 18, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Gray walls and counters, beverage centers, distressed wood and appliances in orange, turquoise and other cheery colors are design trends in kitchens, according to ShopSmart, the shopping magazine from the publisher of Consumer Reports.

    Check out those hot looks:

Shades of gray. All-white kitchens have been the rage and are still popular, but more designers are shaking things up by using grays and beiges (or greige, a combo of the two), according to the National Kitchen & Bath Associations Kitchen & Bath Style Report. Those neutrals look crisp and classic on their own and blend well with many other colors.

Get the look without remodeling. One of the easiest ways to give your kitchen a cool and modern vibe is to paint the walls, backsplash or cabinets a neutral shade of gray.

But you have to do it right, or gray can end up giving your kitchen a chilly, industrial look. One way to warm things up is to pair gray with wood tones or energetic accent colors such as red, orange or yellow. And be sure to choose a semigloss paint, which is the perfect finish for a kitchen because it's easy to clean.

Built-in charging stations. With more people downloading recipes, using FaceTime with friends and reading their morning news on a tablet, the kitchen has become a hub for electronic devices. That has led to the rise of cleverly concealed charging stations showing up in drawers, utility closets or cabinets with built-in electrical outlets and USB ports.

Get the look without remodeling. To keep a tangle of cords from messing up your countertops, ShopSmart suggests looking for a freestanding multidevice charging station that looks nice when left out or that can be tucked into a cabinet. Or consider an electrical outlet with a built-in USB port, about $20 at amazon.com.

Distressed wood flooring. Traditional kitchen flooring tile, laminate and vinyl still has its fans, but hardwood floors are becoming more widely used in open-plan kitchens. They create a warm, seamless look between living areas. Whats new is that designers are using hand-scraped, grooved and other distressed floors because their dents and dings conceal wear and tear.

Get the look without remodeling. You don't have to rip anything out if you install floating floors. They fit together without being glued or nailed down to a subfloor and can be laid over an old, dingy floor as long as its flat and level.

Beverage centers. For people who entertain a lot, creating a designated spot where guests can hang out and help themselves to coffee, cocktails and more is catching on. It can be anything from a simple coffee station to the works: liquor cabinet, wine chiller, ice maker, sink, built-in coffee maker or espresso machine and cabinets for mugs, glasses and supplies.

Kitchens To Go Launches New Blog Post to Streamline Commercial Kitchen Renovations - January 17, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Serving up the right advice can help keep commercial kitchen renovations pain-free, publishes kitchens-2-go.com

Naperville, IL, United States of America January 14, 2015 /MarketersMedia/

Reports from the construction industry indicate commercial kitchen remodeling oversights can set businesses back an estimated $50,000 per project in additional labor and materials alone. This figure does not include revenue forfeited due to construction delays and diverted customers. Profit losses of this nature could render businesses in the food service industry unable to recover from their mistakes. Having seen first-hand the devastation resulting from such developments, Ralph Goldbeck of Kitchens To Go has launched the renowned kitchen development solutions companys latest blog post, detailing 5 important pitfalls to avoid when embarking upon a Commercial Kitchen Remodel or renovation.

Said Goldbeck, The information in this post can save institutions a ton of money, not to mention a bunch of time. Those just planning on doing it the easy way with phased construction owe it to themselves to explore their alternatives. What if they have to close off part of a street, or they have to deal with any issues with historic properties? There are many different issues to consider. After viewers see our expertise and our list of commercial clients, just like their institutions, we hope theyll contact us to discuss their needs further. But even if they dont, we hope theyll read the post so theyre informed.

For schools, hospitals, military bases and other large-scale food service operators, renovating their cooking and serving areas is generally not optional, and often years overdue. In addition to taking advantage of the latest technology in the industry to support their staff and raise the caliber of service and experiential quality for those they serve, these facilities must remain up-to-date in order to pass routine inspections and meet all applicable building and safety codes. These same remodels that are designed to keep them in business, however, can also drive them out of business if not executed properly.

Facilities often cannot afford to simply shut down for months while their renovation project is underway. Some choose to outsource their meal production to a catering company or contract managed provider; however, this route can place an extra 20 to 30 percent strain on their budgets in addition to the cost of renovation. Among the hints provided in the new blog post found at kitchens-2-go.com, is making use of a temporary commercial kitchen to reduce expenses and downtime.

Concluded Goldbeck, Anyone looking into this type of project knows every facet of the job may not go as smoothly as they intend. At Kitchens To Go, we specialize in providing both short and long-term temporary kitchen solutions. Our new blog post is just the latest step in our efforts to help streamline the renovation process for commercial kitchens and support the individuals that lead them.

Smart Ways To Make The Most Of A Compact Kitchen - January 15, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Joanna Simmons, Houzz Contributor

We might all dream of a huge family kitchen, but most of us have to make do with something smaller. That said, whatever the size of our kitchen, the demands we place on it tend to be the same. We want it to function well for preparing and cooking meals. We might also like to be able to sit and eat in there, even if just perched at a breakfast bar. And we need space for a lot of different objects, from chunky appliances to silverware, dishes and food. The good news is, with some clever planning and great design, it is possible to have all these functions in one tiny space, as these inspiring spaces demonstrate.

6 mental tricks to outsmart your small space

Use every nook and cranny. It sounds obvious, but where space is tight, its essential to make use of all of it. This might mean commissioning custom units. Shelves or cupboards designed for your space, rather than bought off the shelf, can exploit even the most awkward corners or weirdly angled rooflines. Luckily, since the number of units you will be able to fit is limited by the small size of the room, a custom design often will be reasonably economical, too.

Enjoy a little rack n rail. Wall cupboards can eat into the space in a very small kitchen, but you can still make any wall work for you by adding racks, rails and slim shelves. These can hold things like saucepans, strung up on S hooks, mugs and pots holding cutlery, and even utensils. Covering the wall in blackboard paint helps it to multitask even more, as a place where you could write shopping lists and messages.

Make it streamlined. Chunky and mismatched pieces would eat into the space and make a tiny kitchen feel cluttered. Instead, opt for units with a minimalist look and, as here, a countertop that flows over all the base units and even extends to become a breakfast bar. The minimalist metal legs seen here keep sight lines open. This kitchen is flooded with natural light, so the color on the unit doors invigorates the space without encroaching on it.

Find another home for laundry appliances. Its not uncommon to find washing machines and dryers installed in the kitchen, but, when space is limited, its a good idea to find an alternative home for them. A nook under some stairs can be a good place. Or consider putting a dryer and perhaps a freezer in the garage, if you have one.

Choose clever details. There are heaps of clever space-saving elements that can be built into a new kitchen, so if youre starting from scratch, look for things like slim spice jar storage, knife drawers, toe-kick drawers and integrated chopping boards that can be slid over a sink or pulled out from the wall.

Try freestanding pieces. Freestanding furniture has its benefits in a small kitchen too. If you take the view that where room is tight, its important to make every item you place in it shine, then suddenly there is a logic to not building everything in. A freestanding piece containing an oven, sink and cupboards, like this one, looks like a beautiful piece of furniture that fits elegantly into the space.
