In George Woodrow's beamed kitchen transformation, they created a sociable space for him and his family with a kitchen addition. The University of Bridgeport has announced its first enrollment increase in five years largely due to international students making up almost half of new students.

The private university, located in Bridgeports South End, said 1,322 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in fall 2022, a 30 percent increase from last year, the university said. The fall semester began last month.

Students undergraduate and graduate alike choose UB because of our outstanding faculty, our commitment to being a diverse and inclusive community, and the incredible learning opportunities we offer, said University of Bridgeport President Danielle Wilken in a statement.

About 45 percent of the newly enrolled students are international students, who the university said applied thanks to a partnership between the universitys international admissions office and a Rhode Island-based firm specializing in international student recruitment called the Enrollment Advisory Group.

University officials did not respond to questions regarding the increase in enrollment. The university has for years been able to draw a significant number of students from abroad. But it was unclear Friday what percentage of the student population has traditionally been made up of international students in past years.

The university said in a release that many graduate international students who enrolled were drawn to its engineering school.

It's also unclear how the international travel ban and the period of online learning imposed at the start of the pandemic has impacted UB's international population, which tends to pay full tuition.

The University of Bridgeport captures the attention of students abroad because of the quality of the programs and the employment opportunities they offer students after graduation, said Khaled Elleithy, an engineering and computer science professor and the College of Engineering, Business, and Education's dean, in the statement.

Almost 30 percent of new undergraduates are student athletes, which the university linked to five new varsity sports programs, which include NCAA Division II mens lacrosse and men's and womens indoor track and field.

We now have some of the biggest roster sizes weve ever had, and that is a testament to the quality of our coaches and staff, Jay Moran, the universitys vice president of athletics and recreation, said in the statement.

As of October, the over 7,000 applications the University of Bridgeport has received so far for the spring term is more than double that of the same time last year, according to the university. That increase has largely been driven by international students as well, the university said.

HJARTFORD A third suspect in Mondays deadly daytime carjacking got away, according to a police report released Friday.

The suspect is one of three who police said pointed guns and fired at the driver of a Range Rover in an apparent attempt to steal the luxury SUV. The driver pulled out his own gun, and there was an exchange of gunfire, the report stated.

One suspect, later identified as Jahziel Phillips-Ray, 23, of Bellevue Street in Hartford, died at the scene. His half-brother, Joseph Ray, 22, was dropped off at Hartford Hospital, where he was treated for gunshot wounds to the left groin and right thigh, the report said.

He was scheduled to be arraigned at the hospital Friday afternoon on charges of criminal attempt to commit murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree robbery. first-degree assault and criminal possession of a pistol/revolver, police and court spokesperson said.

The person who dropped Ray off crashed the getaway car near the hospital and fled, according to the report. Police have not arrested or identified the third suspect, Hartford Police Lt. Aaron Boisvert said Friday.

Police said the shootout happened about 3:15 p.m. Monday outside an apartment building in the 1400-block of Park Street, near the new Parkville Market in the city's Parkville neighborhood.

According to the incident report, officers responding to a 911 call about shots fired found an unconscious man lying in the apartment building parking lot with what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds. They gave him medical aid until medics arrived and pronounced him dead. The man was later identified as Phillips-Ray.

Meanwhile, police received another 911 call about a gunshot victim inside the apartment building. That man, who turned out to be the driver, had gunshot wounds to his legs and torso, the report said. He was taken to the hospital.

While police were helping shooting victims and gathering information, a third victim, Ray, showed up at Hartford Hospital. Someone driving a gray 2019 Nissan Altima had dropped him off and quickly left, crashing into several parked vehicles near the hospital before coming to a stop at Jefferson and Hudson streets, according to the report. In the front passenger seat was a substantial amount of blood and a gun, the report stated.

Witnesses saw the driver get out of the car and run away, police said in the report.

Detectives watched surveillance video of the shootout and saw the driver arrive in the apartment building parking lot, get out of the Range Rover and go into the building, the report stated. The Nissan Altima then pulled into the lot and backed into a spot, facing the SUV, the report said.

The driver then returned to the Range Rover, and as he opened his car door, three masked men simultaneously approached, pointing their guns at him, the report said.

The driver, who has a pistol permit, pulled one of his two guns and gunfire is exchanged as (he) returns fire in an attempt to fend off the three assailants who were firing upon the Range Rover and at (the driver), the report said.

In the mayhem, one of the suspects apparently stole the drivers cellphone, the report stated. It was found in the bloody Nissan that crashed near the hospital, according to the report.

As of Friday, there were no plans to arrest the driver, but Boisvert said the shooting is still under investigation.

A police news release about the attempted carjacking said there were only two suspects.
