Some families give scarves for Christmas. Others give kitchen floors. Thats seriously how our kitchen reno got started, says Katherine Bailey, owner of a local design firm, Kat Bailey and Company. On December 26, 2011, five of Katherines relativesincluding her dad, who works in commercial constructionarrived at the Baileys Birmingham, AL, home and began demolition on the cramped kitchen.
Lisa Romerein
The Bailey boys are cooking in their remodeled kitchen, which features a galvanized metal roofing island, ivory-colored cabinets and unfinished rubber-wood butcher block countertops. Four different brick styles were pieced together to create the flooring.
At first the plan was just to redo the floor, says Katherines husband, Clark, a traffic engineer. But before we knew it, a whole remodel was in the works. Katherines family completed the demo in a few days, then left Katherine and Clark to finish the job. I worked for Katherines dad in construction during college, so I knew something about remodeling, but I also had to teach myself a lot, says Clark.
Ten weeks, $3,100, and just one professional hire (a pro to put up drywall) later, the Baileys had a brand-new kitchen.
The cream cabinets and drawers (21 in all) are from Habitat for Humanity ReStore, a national chain that sells donated furniture, appliances, and building materials for a fraction of the cost. Total price: $600. New hardware for the cabinets was just $150. Katherine was able to use the old pulls, so she didnt have to buy all new onesa big money saver.
Katherine came across three long pieces of unfinished rubber-wood butcher block at a local salvage shop and scooped up all 26 feet for $350. They stained them Kona by Rust-Oleum, then put two along the back wall and the other on the island.
The Baileys bought all their appliances off Craigslist for a steal. The fridge, for example, was just $175. Clark is kind of a research guru, says Katherine. He set up alerts that notified him anytime someone in the area posted a stainless steel refrigeratorthats how he snagged this one.
The base of the kitchen island is made from the same Habitat for Humanity ReStore cabinets, but since they were meant to go against a wall, the backs were unfinished. We didnt know how to solve that problem until, on a whim, I thought of galvanized metal roofing, says Katherine. Two sheets were $40.
Four different brick styles make up the kitchen floor. Some had to be cut to size, so the couple rented a brick saw for $100. People dont use brick much indoors, but its indestructible and hides dirt like crazy, says Katherine.

New York, NY (PRWEB) January 02, 2015
MyHome, the Manhattan-based renovation company, has completed a kitchen renovation at 529 West 42nd Street in Manhattan. The project was designed by MyHome Remodeling Con-sultant Kristiann Colasacco.
Colasacco and her team were tasked creating the illusion of more space in the kitchen without the actual construction of the room changing. To address this, an existing closet space was in-verted and used for the refrigerator, thus creating a built in refrigeration system. To make up for the lost closet space, a larger island with a drawer storage system was installed. Extra seating was also added around the island.
Tall upper wall white melamine cabinets were installed with silver edge banding, creating fine lines and a open, bright, uniform look. A Haisa Marble backsplash creates a mosaic effect, re-sulting in minimal grout lines and providing beautiful contrast between the backsplash and the darker Caesar stone countertops installed in the space. Porcelain floor tiles that resemble slate were also installed, adding a touch of rustic style to the space, which connects it to the ambiance of the rest of the apartment.
MyHome was founded in 2001 by managing partner Yoel Piotraut. The company, which is based in New York City, has a team of fifteen consultants, designers, and managers. MyHomes New York City showroom is located at 353 West 48th Street in Manhattan. Kristiann Colasacco, the projects lead designer, joined MyHome in 2013 after five years of experience in the industry following graduating with honors from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandizing in Los Angeles.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) So its the first weekend after the holidays are you thinking spring and home remodeling projects?
I think people are always thinking about home remodeling. Theres no bad time to update your house, says Nick Vedder of L&L Exhibition Management.
L&L Exhibition has arranged the 12th annual Pittsburgh Remodeling Expo, and over a hundred local exhibitors are betting homeowners agree that its time to update their homes.
Sure the holidays are just over, and it may seem a bit early to think spring remodeling, but dont tell the folks at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center that. A lot of people are turning out to get some good ideas.
Over ten thousand people are expected to show up this weekend to check out everything from bathrooms to kitchens to basements to garages to all kinds of outdoor improvements.
Just come to see all the new products out this year, and Im off work so its a good time to come, says Bill Phelan of Uniontown.
Like many, Kristen Wenskovitch of Gibsonia with her husband and newborn had some specifics in mind.
Few for the outside patio area that we are working on, yes, and we have an indoor flooring project that were looking for next.
And others were, well, sort of along for the ride.
What brings you out to this exposition today? KDKA money editor Jon Delano asked one gentleman.

Typical costs: The cost of remodeling a kitchen depends on the current layout, size and condition of the room, as well as the quality of replacement products chosen. According to an annual construction cost survey by Remodeling Magazine[1] , a minor remodel of a 200-square-foot (10x20) kitchen averages $20,077-$23,210 nationwide; a mid-range major remodel including an island and other upgrades runs $52,405-$63,803; and an upscale remodel for the same size kitchen can be $105,621-$120,379. These are averages; actual costs may be higher or lower. In contrast, DoItYourself.com[2] estimates that the cost of a typical kitchen remodel can start around $5,000 with some do-it-yourself work included, and averages $15,000-$26,000. I remodeled my kitchen for $16,000. It is about 225sqft. Has a 4x8 island and about 20' of wall counter space - 2 sinks. it has hardwood floors - oak with 5 coats of finish, maple cabinets and quartz countertops. I got a budgetary quote from teh calculator at http://www.remodelormove.com and then subtracted the cost of appliances which i did not replace. The calculator was nice because i did some of the work myself
We hired Lighthouse Construction (Lighthouseconsco@aol.com)to remodel our kitchen because of their experiance in working with older homes. We relied heavily on their reccomendations and were amazed every day with the commitmentment to the quality of the work and the attention to planning details. They were very knowlegable in the products available.
We remodeled our Kitchen about a year ago with Green Planet Building located in Los Angeles, CA. They were truly an amazing company to work with. Their attention to detail helped me create a kitchen I love. We put new eco-friendly everything into our kitchen from the beautiful ice-stone counter tops to the no voc paints. It was great to be able to track the entire process of my project online. I knew what what happening everyday because they have a client log in that gave me a calendar of events taking place like the plumber will be there on Friday or the cabinets are being installed on Monday. It was such a great experience we are now having them do our bathrooms.
We recently renovated our kitchen similar to Phillip in Columbus. We gutted it all but left the ceiling, added can lights, new window, and moved a door (new door), removed the furrdowns from the ceiling. Some minor plumbing work and new wiring and outlets, undercounter wiring. Cabinets from Ikea (with soft hinges and door glides, granite countertops (on sale for $36/sf)and travertine floor and backsplash. Total cost was S11,400 for all materials only including tile labor and plumbing labor. If quality contractor was included might cost about $22K. It is a lot of work but looks and feels fantastic. 30-60K increase in value. We already had the appliances, so price is bare kitchen.
