A master class in balancing opposites -
September 20, 2014 by
Mr HomeBuilder
Monochrome master: Greg Natales signature is apparent in the tailored contrasts of black, grey and white in this Brighton home. He created the shape of the rooms before deciding on the exterior. Colour highlights leap out and accentuate the tonings, as with the painting. Photos: Anson Smart.
The plainness and geometric discipline of the street-side presentation of the four bedroom Brighton home is Shaker-style in its rigor and restraint. The tonal story is too. Black, white and grey.
The balance between the black and the white forces of the interiors is along a knife-edge. Neither a blackout nor a whitewash but schemed as big blocks of both in either walling or cabinetry. This poise between opposites is characteristic of the work of one of Australia's busiest and most influential interior designers, Sydney-based Greg Natale.
Order is his manner. He reckons it makes individual furniture piece stand out better. Contrasts of black; invariably some shade of grey, and stark white is his unmistakable signature. Natale is the master of the monochromatic, maybe with some extra textural ground in paled timber (in this case it's American white oak), or in figured white marble.

Usually too, there is a punch of a high key colour to discover somewhere in a room. In the Brighton home, a blue cushion or an orange splash of paint on a large canvas will "pop" into contention like a visual wake-up call.

Black. He can sure do black. "But you do need to know what you're doing," he cautions. "Black is a classic". To Natale it never overwhelms and never gets old. "Black and white is Chanel, isn't it? Her shops have been black and white since the beginning and they never look dated.
"In interiors, it is very bold, very powerful and very tailored". Tailored is another of his maker's marks. He has a coffee table book exploring and explaining his best projects coming out later in the year and has entitled itThe Tailored Interior.

College Station residents might have seen Michael Stribling as a contestant on the TV show Design Star. Or they might remember him from several episodes of Little Couple as an interior designer.
Or they just might have seen him around town, particularly near 2501 Texas Ave., where he is opening the Christopher Michael Salon.
The salon, which formally opens at 5 p.m. Friday, was initially going to be a smaller salon in College Station. But through Striblings mentor, Jason Backe, LOreal partnered with Stribling, providing products and instructors to create what Stribling calls a luxury salon.
Stribling, whose full name is Christopher Michael Stribling, made his reality-show career as an interior designer, but the stress of owning his own firm led him to seek a different profession. The revelation came to him during a Disney cruise with his family.
Whenever I was at my most stressed-out place in life, whenever I was over-worked and just burnt out, the place I found the most relaxation was at the salon, Stribling said. If I was able to do that for someone, if I can relax them, then my job is awesome.
Stribling was living in Houston, but decided to move home to College Station, where his parents, brother and sister-in-law live. Its also home to Striblings three nephews and niece.
My life is about those four kids, Stribling said. When Im not at work, Im with my nephews and niece.
Stribling pitches his salon as more than just a place to get a haircut. There are TVs on the ceiling above the sinks so clients can have a music video with their shampoo. Giant pictures of models cover several walls, and wine and chocolate are available.
I wanted it to feel like an art gallery, he said.
Backe, whose clientele includes Anne Hathaway and Angelina Jolie, said he has high hopes for Striblings salon.
