Over five years, Hoppen has been carefully tapping into the upper-middle classes in India, China and beyond. This affluent and fast-growing demographic has been a saving grace for Hoppen Interiors. In Mumbai, for example, many generations of the family would live together. But now they are splitting up and buying small apartments, and they can afford branded luxury, she says.
Hoppen is currently working on 40 projects around the world, which range from private homes to hotel developments. Diversification is the best way to protect the business from future economic shocks, she says. As an entrepreneur, you constantly have to look at where the next buck is coming from, and how you can make a difference elsewhere in the world.
Hoppen's success abroad prompted the Government to appoint her as an export ambassador for its Business is GREAT campaign. She has just returned from a two-week tour of Mumbai and Hong Kong as part of this role.
During the Mumbai leg of her trip, Hoppen launched the 55-storey Lodha Estrella luxury residential development built in collaboration with her Kelly Hoppen for YOO business. She is also hot on the trail of new strategic partners to help grow her new e-commerce firm in Asia. Ive been working on the dotcom business for a year and a half, and its been live for eight months, says Hoppen.
KellyHoppen.com is now selling homewares, linen and wallpaper direct to the consumer, and Hoppen is planning to turn this into a global enterprise. I have a massive following in Asia but its expensive to ship items over so Im looking for partners where I can have stock, says Hoppen. We brought all our manufacturing back to the UK to support our economy but Im also looking for international artisans to help fuse East and West.
On home turf, Hoppen is launching pop-up shops in Bluewater and Westfield this month. These pop-ups are going to test the waters so I can find out where we want to be.
Hoppen has also now launched Studio Hoppen, a team of designers trained by Hoppen, which now complements her established couture business. Its not me, its them doing the designing but I do look in on projects, she says. It takes the pressure off me.
Hoppen is also spending a lot of time on her investment companies. Last year, she joined the BBC show Dragons Den, and has notched up investments in fake tanning brand Skinny Tan; exercise start-up The Running Mat; Revivaphone, which saves water-damaged smartphones; Skribbies and Phom Teas.
Its much harder than you would think, she says. Some of these companies need a lot of babysitting.
The third series airs in January but the sheen has already worn off the show for Hoppen, who says that she was like a kid in a candy shop during filming for the first series.

"Measuring and laying out a room in advance can save you a lot of headaches," David Bromstad, interior designer.
Interior design is all about taking a space and making it better, either by making it more beautiful or more functional, if not both. From consumer living rooms to corporate complexes, interior design can happen on any scale. Just like with the old idiom "measure twice, cut once," interior design requires careful planning and an eye for detail. The same can be said of a well-executed marketing campaign. LeadFerret, the free B2B data site, has published a directory of men and women who, regardless of job title, consider themselves to be experts in interior design.

NATION BUILDERS. Representatives from media, tourism and design industries discuss how each sector can do their part in nation building. Photo by Linh Do/Gawad Kalinga
BULACAN, Philippines The notion of nation building is scary," interior designer Cynthia Almario told participants at the Gawad Kalingas Social Business Summit 2014 on October 2.
How can tourism, design and online media help build a nation? Interior designers Cynthia and Ivy Almario; Rappler CEO Maria Ressa; and Department of Tourism Assistant Secretary Bong Bengzon shared their thoughts on how to do it during a panel discussion.
Social design
Cynthia and sister Ivy, also an interior designer, own Atelier Almario. Their portfolio includes many luxury hotels and homes around the Philippines and abroad including the Astoria in Boracay and Movenpick Hotel in Cebu.
Their edge? Our design solutions are always innovative and fresh, Cynthia said.
Without hesitation, the sisters said they agreed to design for GKonomics which, according to the GKonomics website, "facilitates the social entrepreneurs partnership by forming strategic partnerships between the entrepreneur and GKs communities.
Ivy explained, Were very conscious in highlighting Filipino talent."
Cynthia said, Our model: Existing skills plus good design and production expertise equals value creation. Because of this model, fund generation is in waves instead of trickles.
Ivy also echoed the summit's underlying theme. Collaboration is key, everything is Bayanihan," she said.

MICHELLE BURGESS believes that if you look and if you listen, a house will tell you what to do.
This is the story of what the interior designer/artist did to hers.
There are pictures of family and things I found. Antiques and bits from relatives. Art from those she likes and admires. Burgess is not above Ikea nor beneath fine textiles. The latest item to settle in is a love seat that belonged to a friend. Every time I had a dinner party I borrowed it from her. Last year at Thanksgiving she brought it and said, Here, this is yours.
It all comes back to family and friends at the place she calls Taylor Cottage, cheery cherry red and tucked into the woods of Bainbridge Island.
About 15 years ago, Burgess and her husband, Henry Shepherd, were searching for a house on the island. Shepherd was raised here. (Also, beaches are minutes away in three directions.) Friends told them about the cottage, but it was out of their league. They bid on a house in Port Madison. But it didnt feel right. They took the offer back. A year later the cottage was still for sale.
Burgess knew it was the one, her first and, so far, only house. The little place is both an intimate and interesting choice for a woman who is often called upon to transform and personalize far grander homes for others.
I didnt anticipate that wed still be here or that the building would still be this size, she says.
Burgess guesses her home is 1,600 square feet. She is being generous. Its kitchen to living room, left through the pocket doors to the master bedroom (also Burgess office). Daughter Paloma sleeps in the other bedroom off the short hallway. The attic has been conscripted into a bedroom for daughter Ava and office for Shepherd (up a ships ladder in the kitchen). One bathroom.
Out back, what was once the garage is now the Party Palace, one room that holds a table for 12, a chandelier in the rafters, waiting to be called upon to cast a welcoming glow.
Thats it.
