Frank Fontana
Putting the improv in home improvement
Interior designer and lifestyle expert Frank Fontana is the host and lead designer for the Chicago-based version of HGTVs top-rated design show Design on a Dime. He is also one of the few host/designers simultaneously appearing in two HGTV shows, as well as an array of network specials. In addition to taking the reins of Design on a Dime, he is also the lead designer of Takeover My Makeover, featured designer for the Change the World campaign and the Christmas special Decked for the Holidays.
Many recognize Fontana as the real life Italian Stallion of the lifestyle world and underdog winner of ABCs 2004 reality competition, The Great Domestic Showdown, where he launched his now booming television career.
In his mid-20s, Fontana, a student of real world design, started his own event design company, where he created themed parties and designed nightclub decor through out the country. After a strategic move to Los Angeles, he started producing major events and creating cutting-edge interiors for many of the entertainment industry elites, fortune 500 companies and Hollywood celebrities, including a few parties for Halle Berry, Dennis Quaid and Jeff Goldblum.
He is best known for combining his innovative vision with traditional home design basics, making him one of the most versatile designers to explode on the lifestyle scene today.
Fontana is also a featured columnist. In addition, he is a contributing expert to publications and media outlets nationwide.

HOST: Celia Sawyer on Your Home In Their Hands.
YOUR HOME IN THEIR HANDS BBC1
"WOULD you," asks interior designer Celia Sawyer, "hand over your keys to complete strangers in exchange for a makeover?" No need Celia. We've got kids. Every wall comes with an individual hand mark.
Your Home In Their Hands sees desperate householders allow ambitious amateurs to redesign their homes. "Will it be tears of joy," asks Celia, "or just plain tears?" Depends how badly you want a day-glo orange toilet.
First up were Kelly and Andy, whose own tastes varied so much they'd compromised by allowing one another a wall in each room. okay, so long as one of you isn't into Glee and the other Hammer Horror.
They'd been given Kirsty, a fashion designer from Canada. "My style," she revealed, "is a maximalist, opulent, psychedelic fairyland." Or a migraine as it's otherwise known.
"It's a walk on the wild side," she added. I'd suggest she redesigns the lion enclosure at Longleat while they're still in there.
Kirsty was charged with transforming Kelly and Andy's bedroom. She came up with a red ceiling, leopard print carpet, and pink flowery walls. Someone should have told her it was for a middle-aged couple from the Home Counties, not Dorian from Birds Of A Feather.
"Now this," sighed Celia, "is what I call a mess. We've got purple, we've got red, we've got black, we've got blue, we've got leopard skin." That reminds me, when is the sale at DFS?
"I always think interior design should be like getting your clothes out the wardrobe," Celia noted. "You put them on and you have an outfit and it kind of goes together." Kirsty's template appeared to be Rod Stewart's stage gear circa 1978.

Sponsored by Lee Douglas Interiors, Inc. & Build Omaha: When a builder and interior designer work together from the beginning, you get a home that is worth looking at, and that is just what happened at the Lee Douglas Interiors homes for the Home Inspiration Tour.
Using an interior designer at the start of a home building process was once considered a luxury, but now builder partners see them as part of the package.
Designers can look at the plan when it is on paper and work with the home owner to determine how the house is going to live. They can make critical alterations before they become expensive changes.
In addition, good builders hire designers to choose the materials and permanent features with the homeowner. Wouldnt you rather have your builder on site and managing the project vs shopping with you at a tile or window store?
Designers can alert you to trends and the possibilities of good design, but what is good design? Good design is what works for the homeowner and every project should be different. There are so many good trends to talk about, but were starting out with two that we get a ton of questions about. These may seem disjointed but hang in there with me.
Kitchens: The kitchen is the heart of the home. Whether you want them there or not, your family and friends are going to hang out while you cook and prepare. Isnt it time we stopped the madness and made the kitchen an adequate space where you can cook and be with your friends as they sip their wine?
Designing a kitchen by creating boundaries, no cross zones, and divisions that are invisible to your guests keeps everyone happy. Yes, you can entertain while cooking, and it can be one of the best looking rooms in the house by mixing woods, metals, lighting, ceiling treatments etc.
More kitchens are also including a door to a hidden space that looks just like another cabinet. This definitely keeps them out of your business! Whats behind there is whatever works for you. Just think of the possibilities: a pantry, a prep kitchen, appliance storage, wine storage, a coffee bar, a desk for meal planning, let your imagination go! Its no longer just what the plan says; its what you want it to be.
Floor Transitions: Do you know why streets have lines painted on them? Its because people generally like to go by the rules and stay within the lines.
Think of that analogy when planning your flooring breaks. There are so many floors to fall in love with: Great woods, tiles, concrete etc. but sorry, folks, you need to pick just a few and plan effectively.

It's two men and a baby: Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent are going to be dads.
The "American Dream Builders" host and his new husband shared the news Wednesday on their Facebook pages, revealing they were expecting their first child via surrogate in the spring.
"We have had the most special year and its JUST become even more beautiful," Berkus wrote. "We are happy to announce that we are expecting our first child!"
"While we can't share much, we can say that thanks to a surrogate and the support of those we love we will officially be a family in the spring of 2015!" he added.
Berkus, 43, an interior designer, and Brent, a former assistant to fashion designer Rachel Zoe, got engaged in Machu Picchu, Peru, in April 2013 after dating for about nine months.
They wed at the New York Public Library last May in a wedding that was touted as the historic landmark's first same-sex nuptials.
The event was attended by Berkus' pal Oprah Winfrey, TV personality Rachael Ray, "The Kitchen" cohost Katie Lee, designer Rebecca Minkoff,"Cougar Town" star Busy Philipps and Elizabeth Hendrickson of "The Young and the Restless."
The ceremony was reportedly officiated by Sheri Salata, president of OWN.
We can totally see Oprah being the baby's godmother. Follow me on Twitter @NardineSaad.

What is your fashion view?I went to Otis/Parsons School of Art and Design for Fashion. I have since been in the interior design field, but fashion has always played a huge role in my inspiration as a designer. Shapes, textures and trending moments of color solidify my ideas in design and continue to inspire me.
How do you describe your style?Well, the better question would be how would another person describe my style? They would say I love feathers and glitter! Seriously, I love exploring fashion, and the boundaries to which I express my creativity through fashion are nonexistent. I am kinda known for showing up to an event red-carpet ready - and then some.
What are your favorite pieces? My favorite pieces are ones I find during my travels.
Why are these your favorite pieces? They remind me of where I have been and the times I had there. I also use travel as a wonderful excuse to shop my heart out.
Where is your favorite place to shop?I mostly shop at boutiques. I love SOHO for shopping. At the end of a long day of finding amazing things, I like to settle in for a peach bellini in the Mercer Hotel lobby and people watch.
Who is your fashion icon?Issey Miyake and Comme de Garcon are two of them, but there are too many to count. I typically like the more fashion-forward, out-of-the-box designers. No Fear! I have the same approach to my own fashion and interior design.
What do you love most about being a designer?Working with my clients, getting to know them on a personal level. Making their houses into homes. That is where it is at. I am changing the world, one room at a time.
Is there anything else you want our readers to know about you?My new home dcor line, http://www.kenngrayhome.com, melds my love of fashion and nostalgia with a modern aesthetic, which evokes a current attitude and superlative style.
