Renovation Solutions: Design for everyday homeowners - December 20, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Our message in a nutshell: No, the first step to a remodel is not to call a contractor. Design comes before construction and each professional has their expertise.

Many of our friends and acquaintances are kind enough to tell us they enjoy reading our columns. Other than that, however, we dont get a lot of feedback. So, it was with interest the other day when we received an email commenting on our efforts.

The author was a man with a personal interest in architecture and a professional background in interior design. His comment was that many of the photographs that accompany our articles left something to be desired in terms of interior design, and he recommended that we considered upgrading the performance of our firms current interior designer.

Many medium and large architectural firms do employ a full-time interior designer or even a whole department of interior designers. Our firm, however, is small and we do not have an interior designer on staff. His comments, however, caused us to think about the philosophy of our firm.

We started our firm to bring architecture to the "masses" to real, everyday people. In our previous firm, we seldom worked with clients with budgets less than $1 million. These clients always used interior designers, and the results were generally worthy of publication in glitzy design magazines. At the same time, we noticed that we regularly received phone inquiries from people regarding how to proceed on remodeling their homes, but their budgets were too small for that firm to serve.

The result was that in 2003, we took a deep breath, left our well-established employer, and started a company designed to help homeowners who want good design in their lives, even though their budgets are more "normal" than those served by most architects.

For the last almost 12 years, we have had the privilege of working with 900 clients and uncounted numbers of "investigators" who have come into our office to find out what an architect does, how much they cost, and why would one want to hire one anyway? We have spent countless unpaid hours educating people about the concept of good architectural design and the necessity of having a master plan before one undertakes a home remodel.

Our message in a nutshell: No, the first step to a remodel is not to call a contractor. Design comes before construction and each professional has their expertise. If you wouldnt be comfortable with us swinging the hammer to build your addition, you shouldnt feel good about a contractor designing it.

With draperies dancing in afternoon breezes and an innate sense of style and architecture, Palm Springs based interior designer Christopher Kennedy was inspired by the beauty surrounding him growing up on Californias central coast.

The designer recently opened a showroom in the up and coming southern corridor of Palm Canyon Drive. Although half of the 3,000 square foot space is dedicated to retail, Kennedy took a different approachone that would whisk clients and customers away into his lifestyle vision.

I did not come at it with a retailers point of view, the showroom was driven by my background as a designer, Kennedy said. This is about a lifestyle brand and I want customers to come in and be a part of our world.

That world, according to Kennedy, is filled with vibrant California-glamour and jet-set luxury.

Interior Designer Beatrice M. Fulford-Jones, SBID IIDA, Completes Design of Luxury Turnkey Condominiums - December 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    (PRWEB) December 18, 2014

London-based high-end interior designer, Beatrice M. Fulford-Jones, SBID IIDA, recently completed the design of two high-end condominiums located outside of Boston, Massachusetts. The project, Wetherby Place, is a turnkey development. Jones acted as interior designer and project manager to create two condominiums that feature exquisitely designed interiors outfitted with sumptuous furnishings and state-of-the-art systems and appliances. The venture is a signature illustration of how Beatrice brings an international lan to American residences designed for discerning clients looking to move right in. As Ms. Fulford-Jones explains, for this project I created a comprehensive solution for busy professionals who appreciate high-end design but demand a hassle-free lifestyle.

Wetherby Place 1, the first floor condominium, features a sleek kitchen outfitted with Bosch appliances, Cabico European-style frameless custom cabinetry, seamless Krion countertop, backsplash and sink by Porcelanosa, low level LED ambient lighting and pop-up USB power column on the peninsula. The space is furnished in classic modern style, with a Calligaris dining table and chairs, Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier seating, Noguchi coffee table, Ligne Roset media console, Italian chandelier, and a curved ultra HD TV. The master bedroom and guest bedroom each include a custom walk-in closet with beds by Ligne Roset and BoConcept. Custom high-end bed linens and window treatments complete the design.

Wetherby Place 2, a bright contemporary space, occupies the second and third floors of the three-story building. Similar to the first floor unit, the kitchen features Cabico custom cabinetry, a seamless Krion solid-surface countertop, sink and backsplash by Porcelanosa, and integrated high- and low-level LED ambient lighting. A pop-up USB power column on the island, a Bosch cooktop featuring 'flex-induction' completes the kitchens superbly appointed yet supremely efficient purpose. The condo is furnished with exceptional pieces from Ligne Roset, BoConcepts, and Roche Bobois. An entertainment system is anchored by a 65 curved, ultra HD smart TV and accompanying media. The three bathrooms have Porcelanosa fixtures and tile, as well as rain showers, heated flooring, and heated towel bars.

I envisioned the spaces to be soothing and comfortable, elegant and refined. Whether used as a primary residence or as a home away from home for international professionals, my turnkey designs offer all the amenities needed for a luxurious lifestyle, notes Ms. Fulford-Jones.

The methodology Ms. Fulford-Jones employs for these turnkey projects is unique. While traditional renovations typically pass from the early involvement of a designer to a project manager and contractor who realize the original scheme, Beatrice takes on and integrates the dual roles of interior designer and project manager. Although challenging, Ms. Fulford-Jones finds that the day-to-day, hands-on design and construction process is highly efficient. Moreover, supervising a project from start to finish allows her to keep a watchful eye on all the details and ensures that everything is completed with thoroughness and skill. Ultimately, her designs express the high level of luxury desired by her clients.

    Premier joins Sydneysiders at shrine

NSW Premier Mike Baird has laid flowers at the makeshift shrine to the two victims of the Sydney cafe siege.

Firefighters are battling to contain two neighbouring bushfires in South Australia's Barossa Valley.

Firefighters in Victoria's northeast are trying to build a buffer between a bushfire and nearby homes.

Disgraced former Labor powerbroker Eddie Obeid has been stripped of his Order of Australia.

Lindt cafe manager Tori Johnson has been remembered by colleagues as a man who always put others first.

Three people, including the gunman, have been killed and four injured after the siege in Sydney's CBD ended.

Australia is facing its worst bushfire day so far this summer with five states expecting extreme fire risks.

Kelly Hoppen's Travelling Life - December 16, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

If its a beach holiday, a perfect hotel, the most gorgeous beach and weather. And for a ski break, the chalet has to be perfect.

    Favourite places to visit?

Anywhere in Asia. I also love Mauritius and adore Europe and get a kick out of Paris, Capri and Florence. Travel inspires me hugely. Ive just spent two weeks in Mumbai and Im going back in March as an ambassador for the Britains GREAT campaign. The people there are extraordinary and its so different to what were used to. Its noisy, fast, colourful and vibrant. But of course it has its problems and the poverty is awful.

    Mauritius (Fotolia/AP)

    Best ever holiday?

I cant pick one. Theyve all been good, whether it be to Careyes or Tulum in Mexico, or Mauritius.

How do you most like to spend your time away?

When Im on holiday, doing absolutely nothing. Usually Im so busy at work, juggling hundreds of phone calls, meetings and running to catch flights. So essentially a holiday should be a break from all that. I want to unwind and chill out, whether Im up in the mountains somewhere or by the sea.

    Your most adventurous trip?

Bhutan. I went around seven years ago and it was an extraordinary, unique place. I hiked up to the Taktsang Monastery (Tigers Nest), which is perched high on a cliff-top and believed to be the birthplace of Buddhism in Bhutan. I did a lot of meditating while I was there.
