Cullen Moser of New Bern said she was kind of shocked for being featured in the fall edition of Meredith Magazine.
Moser is one of four former alumni of Meredith College featured in the quarterly magazines new Wings Program section that commits to adult learning and symbolizes the power that every woman has to elevate herself.
I thought it was really cool, she said. I never really thought I would be someone they would choose to do an article on.
Yet, Moser said her job, designing interiors for Hatteras Yachts, is not something most people typically think of in the field of interior design.
Its a pretty cool job, she said.
Moser graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a degree in advertising and marketing in 2002 but, after a year and half, she decided she did not want to do that kind of work. In 2004, she enrolled at Meredith College to get an interior design degree.
I was kind of concerned I would be one of the oldest people in the program, she said, but there were actually quite a few of us folks going back to school getting another degree. I didnt fully understand their adult education program. Some of the students ranged in age from 24 (Mosers age at the time) to their 70s who graduated, which I think is great.
Meredith College was extremely comfortable and the professors were accommodating to the adult students, Moser said.
I loved the classes, she said. They were the perfect size. I was going to Carolina where the classes had 300 or 400 students. With classes that size, you are just a number.
At Meredith, it was more intimate and more focused on students, Moser said.

ON THE CUSP: Hayley Anne-Brown has an impressive portfolio and growing client list, but taking the plunge into business is still a tough decision.
Dan Khan
When is it time to give up your day job? It's a quandary many entrepreneurs face, and Auckland interior designer Hayley-Anne Brown is standing at that crossroad.
The 30-year-old works 40 hours from Monday to Thursday as Manukau Institute of Technology's resident interior designer. Meanwhile, she is flat out running her interior design firm, Lou Brown Design, from Friday to Sunday.
While the day job has led to her single-handedly overseeing the colourful fit-out of the polytechnic's new campus, demand in her own business is growing so quickly that soon the time will come for her to go it alone.
"In the next six months to a year I will go fulltime [into my business]. I can work seven days and hold down two jobs for a while because I don't have kids but, at some point, I just need to go for it," Brown says.
"I don't have backup and I need to pay my bills so, to run this business, I have to have enough money coming in and a solid base of customers. I don't want to be fretting about cashflow and invoices - I want to hit the ground running."
Serial entrepreneur and startup mentor Dan Khan says it's particularly hard to make the leap into a fulltime business in a service-orientated profession such as interior design.
"It's often harder to make the shift with this type of firm because building the business takes time," he says.
"With a product-based business it takes a lot of tweaking before you can scale it up but it's a lot easier to do that on the side.

Northville, MI (PRWEB) November 05, 2014
Tutto Interiors, a leading interior design firm based in Northville, MI, announced today that it was the recipient of 7 Detroit Home Design Awards for 2014. The project submitted to the home design contest was the complete renovation of a 10,000 square foot Bloomfield Hills home; it won in multiple design categories, including 1st place for home theatre, traditional foyer, interior lighting and small space remodel.
This year has been particularly rewarding for Tutto Interiors. While renovating a 10,000 sq ft space into a dream that was only imagined in my client's mind, I discovered the transformative power of renovation said Cheryl Nestro, the companys Principle and lead interior designer.
I may call myself an interior designer, but it feels like what I actually do, is orchestrate the dreaming process. I listen to my clients, I absorb their dreams and then I steer that energy into something that is real. I look at a space holistically not just looking at one room, but I consider how it connects to the whole, and to my client.
Cheryl worked closely with the client, Dr. Louis Radden, during the renovation, to create living spaces that are both beautiful and practical, for him and his two teenage sons.
Drawing decorating cues from the architecture of the space, and inspiration from the clients personality and lifestyle, Cheryl accomplished a renovation that is impeccable in both style and function. Contemporary interior design, understated elegance, exquisite details, and a gentle flow from one room to the next, helped transform the home into a sophisticated and sumptuous, yet still comfortable environment. A subtle, neutral color palette, rich layering of a variety of textures and finishes, and sparkly light fixtures work together to add interest and sophistication, and maintain an elegant contemporary feel.
The stunning, double staircase foyer ranked 1st for traditional foyer." Light colored marble, white walls, dark wood, and a crystal chandelier hint of understated elegance and tasteful luxury that carries throughout the home. The 1st level renovation of the kitchen/family room area ranked 1st in small space remodel."
The minute attention to detail, evident throughout the home, was recognized with 1st place awards in the categories for using decorative glass and mirror, interior/exterior lighting and use of fabrics and wall coverings. Mentioned in the judges accolades were the cascading bubbles chandelier paired with an illuminated glass countertop in the lower level kitchen, the home theatre transformation (fabric panels, rich wood paneling, leather seating, golds and browns, meld luxuriously together for a space thats inviting and plush) and the layering of fabrics and materials in the family room for a plush and sophisticated look.
Overall, I feel my house has evolved into something I never imagined it could be thats the beauty of working with an accommodating and talented interior designer said Dr. Radden, when asked about the renovation.
Success for me is when the clients walk into a space I created, and they feel drawn to it, even if they dont know why. When the space feels like an extension of ones self, when it feeds the soul and allows you to feel at home, thats when I feel I was successful, and thats what I look to accomplish for each one of my clients, with each of my renovations said interior designer Cheryl Nestro.

As an interior designer, one of the things that clients ask me to perform most often is organizing, decorating, and accessorizing their home bookshelves. People seem to be intimidated by the prospect of making these spaces look neat and interesting. When styling a multitude of homes for my book Elements of Style: Designing A Home & A Life, I found myself utilizing a series of rules when it came to working on the bookshelves. Here are five essential tips:
In order to do this properly, pull out everything from your shelves, wipe them down, and start from the ground up. When you try to reorganize piece-by-piece you get nowhere. Edit down to your most important books and possessions and group them by type on the floor.

Before you start putting things back in, think about ways to dress up the space itself. I love applying patterned wallpaper or grasscloth to the backs of shelves to make them feel like a little jewelry box. An easier (and less expensive) method is to do a bold or dark color paint. These methods will really makes the objects on your shelves pop.

Dont limit yourself to just books! The key to making your bookshelves feel curated is to mix in accessories along with your book collection. Sculptural objects, bookends, vases, tchotchkes, picture frames, and art pieces all make fantastic additions. Another tip is to orient your books in different directions, with some spines vertical and some horizontal. On the horizontal stacks place an object atop it for perfect layering effect.
