How does an interior designer create privacy for a bathroom window that looks out onto a busy street? Interior Designer Linda Cohen, ASID, Associate AIA, of L.A. Cohen Design faced this challenge while working with a client on the renovation of an ocean-front luxury home in Palm Beach County, Florida. The home has a grand exterior stairway leading up to the second floor entry with a two-story window on each side facing busy A1A. The original clear glass windows are each 20 wide by 115 tall and offered little privacy for the guest bath and interior stairway and elevator area.
Linda has always admired Tiffany glass and wanted to incorporate art glass into her designs. This was the perfect opportunity. The guest bath was being remodeled with the finest custom cabinetry, plumbing and lighting fixtures, and gorgeous custom wallpaper. The window needed a privacy solution and she thought custom art glass to coordinate with the wallpaper would be a great solution. They would be enjoyed by everyone from both inside and outside the home.
After being referred to glass artist Peter Edward of Krystal Glass Company by Michael Gianvito of Stone Styles, Inc., Linda visited his showroom to explore decorative custom art glass solutions. She brought in a sample piece of the wallpaper she planned to use in the guest bath and consulted with the 30-year glass artist about recreating elements from it in the art glass windows.
After viewing his art glass it was evident that Peter Edward is an excellent artist and a fabulous resource, Linda said.
Working closely with Linda to achieve the exact look she wanted, Peter Edward created a stunning custom art glass solution using etched glass illuminated with LED lights. The glow from the art glass windows would add another unique element of beauty to the inside and outside of the already magnificent home.
My first challenge was to create a design to coordinate with the wallpaper selected for the bathroom that would also look good on the other window in the stairway, Peter Edward said. The second challenge was to make the windows opaque for privacy but also compliment the homes exterior.
Peter Edward reproduced the fine detail of the wallpapers main design onto new low-iron Optiwhite glass using hand carved and etched glass techniques. He completed the look with LED lights to illuminate the art glass windows with a beautiful glow of white light. He created art glass inserts so the existing hurricane impact windows would not have to be changed.
Linda says she is very pleased with the custom decorative solution that Peter Edward created for her client and the prompt, friendly service that Krystal Glass Company provided.
They are a wonderful company to work with on many levels including design, detail, and scheduling, she said. The custom designed and etched art glass windows are the first project I used Krystal Glass Company for. Their quality and finished product was excellent.

AN INTERIOR stylist from Wycollar appeared on the BBC's 'Great Interior Design Challenge' yesterday.
Jane Collins, of Happy Interiors, featured on the programme after her next door neighbour told her about the opportunity.
Jane said: I have always had a real passion for interiors and am forever rearranging rooms in my head when I see things that arent just right or would look better if they were put elsewhere.
Its something that comes very naturally to me, and Ive been doing it since about the age of five.
When the TV opportunity came along I didnt feel daunted, I felt really excited and ready for the challenge, so got my application in straight away. When I was called up for the interview I was blown away.
Despite a long, gruelling interview process, Jane successfully made it through along with 26 other hopefuls, and was ready for filming earlier this year.
She said: It was a great feeling - almost relief - to find out I had made it to the show. The whole experience had felt pretty surreal up until this point, so I was keen to show what I could do.

RMH-LI Redesign Hits Home With Dall -

Kelly Dall, a Long Island-based interior designer and participant in the Ronald McDonald House of Long Islands (RMH-LI) $5.1 million Project Design initiative, is just one of the 45 prestigious designers of the nonprofit organizations recently completed renovation. Her participation, however, is particularly unique, as her family is a former resident family of RMH-LI in New Hyde Park, a home away from home for families of seriously ill children.
During RMH-LIs designer recruitment phase, Dall stood out not only because of her interior design talents and abilities, but her personal history with the house and understanding of its mission. In 2007, the Dall family faced one of the most difficult times in their lives when their third child, Elle, was born with a diaphragmatic hernia. This diagnosis has a 15 percent survival rate.
Last year, the Dalls once again faced a life-or-death situation when their 14-year-old son suffered from osteomyelitis (an infection in the bone), an abscess in his acetabulum and a septic joint. Having RMH-LI by their side made life a little bit easier while they were caring for Elle and Sean at the hospital next door.
The house is an extremely special place to us, Dall says. When our kids were sick, the thought of not being with them every possible moment was frightening. We were away from home for weeks but RMH-LI made it possible to stay close while being able to take a shower or lay down for a quick nap.
Dall describes her work in the project as good karma and her relationship with the house as coming full circle. When I heard about this project, I immediately knew I was going to be a part of it, she said. The house provides unbelievable comfort to families during a very emotional time, and I am honored to be able to provide a calm, restful healing environment for families experiencing the pain of having a child in area hospitals.
