Iyanla's new fix - November 26, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

TV host Iyanla Vanzant was pretty much homeless at the start of the year. Yes, she was living in a cavernous 7,500-square-foot house in Upper Marlboro. But the home amounted to four walls and a roof. There was no reflection of her in it. It was an empty shell.

When her boss Oprah Winfrey, head of the OWN Network that broadcasts Vanzant's "Fix My Life" show, heard about it, she decided to transform the interior of Vanzant's home with all the dcorative bells and whistles.

The metamorphosis was a Christmas, birthday, and anniversary gift all rolled into one, Winfrey said. The makeover was so spectacular that Winfrey created a prime-time special centered on the reveal. "Oprah Prime: Iyanla I'll Fix Your House," chronicles the changes made to the Prince George's County estate with the help of celebrity interior designer Nate Berkus.

"This is a gift on behalf of every wonderful thing you have done for others," Winfrey said on the show, which airs Nov. 29 on OWN. "Your home should be your sanctuary."

Berkus scoured the globe to find products that would incorporate Vanzant's Afro-centric roots, deep faith and vibrancy that has won millions of fans for the life coach guru and best-selling author. He found African textiles online; furniture and accent pieces from a vintage homeware emporium in Los Angeles; stone from Italy; tile from France; and locally sourced items such as wood from an old barn near Vanzant's home.

"Even in a very condensed amount of time, the home feels very layered," Berkus said. "It wasn't a bad house. It just was a bit outdated."

Berkus' efforts worked. Five months later, the end result was a home that left Vanzant speechless, tearful and extremely grateful.

"Everyone is just amazed at the way that Nate was able to capture my spirit," Vanzant, 61, said. "The house looks like me. You would expect that I had done the original design."

Vanzant's new home caps off what has been a remarkable year as she embarked on a nationwide tour with Oprah for "Oprah's The Life You Want Weekend" events. On Dec. 4, she will visit Baltimore for "An Evening with Iyanla Vanzant" at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall.

More than a decade ago, Vanzant was making regular appearances on The Oprah Show to the delight of millions of fans, but her life was spinning out of control. Following a series of setbacks that included the death of her daughter, Gemmia; a divorce from her husband and a falling out with Winfrey over the direction of Vanzant's career, she eventually lost her television gig and filed for bankruptcy, which resulted in the bank repossessing her home.

    A restless multi-talent - November 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

If you can cut precisely fitting dresses, you can sew anything, even circus tents. Its all in the cutting, opines Grard M. Wilson (40), an Englishman with eastern European roots, a fashion creator, and an interior designer.

HE CAN DRESS a person in most anything, from perfectly fitted suits through paper cards to well-cut wooden dresses. And for a change he dresses furniture of all types with the nonchalance of a first-rate tailor. When he was just seventeen, this restless Londoner opened a shop on Carnaby Street featuring crazy outfits (Boy George was one of his customers). It was in this shop that he gained practical experience, cutting and sewing tailor-made clothes. However, he was not very satisfied with his studies at the renowned St. Martin School of design, preferring to gain experience in various design fields. In France, he served an internship in the manufacture of equestrian saddles and tack, learning new upholstering techniques. Upon his return to England, wild latex items became the craze, so he glued colorful T-shirts and pants made of rubber latex together. Seven years ago he moved to Prague and established Rogue Designs, a fashion and interior studio. He currently designs costumes for advertisements, films, and fashion shows, but he also tailors for private clients. Wilsons witty and unconventional designs adorn interiors of well-known Prague clubs and restaurants like Radost FX. He speaks most highly of the interior of the Blind Eye club in ikov, which is to open at the end of February. There will be a huge, articulated, wavy couch that can seat up to 50. This is probably my finest creation to date, he says. Wilsons creations are often a symbiosis of fashion and design. I like furnishing my clients with everything from clothes to furniture. If they let me, I like to go wild, but I have no personal style of my own. True, Im not very proud of this, but I can make near-perfect copies, he confides. On the other hand, he is able to create original wares of which not even fashion designer John Galliano would be ashamed. He enjoys designing haute couture style items, but simple, comfortable, fully functional fashion is his real challenge. An evening gown (materials included) sells for CZK 3,000 and up at Rogue Designs, suits go for around CZK 9,000, and you can have your favorite sofa reupholstered for as little as CZK 4,000-5,000.

Greg Natale's style secrets - November 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Arguably Australia's most renowned and influential interior designer, Greg Natale has released his first book.

In The Tailored Interior, the award-winning, Sydney-based founder of Greg Natale Design guides readers through his chic, elegant interiors while detailing the creative process that goes into each project - from finding inspiration and establishing a concept, to layering pieces for contrast and balance and adding the finishing touches.

"I've always wanted to do a coffee table book but I didn't want it just to be the pictures," Natale said.

"While of course I want readers to be inspired by the images, I also wanted it to be about the process of interior decorating and an educational experience."

The book showcases 18 of the incredible spaces Natale has created, with stunning images by celebrated photographer Anson Smart.

"Interiors are actually very logical when you know how to approach them, and that's what I hope The Tailored Interior can teach homeowners," Natale said.

Since he started in 2001, Greg Natale Design has become one of Australia's top interiors firms, working across design and decoration in residential, retail and commercial spaces and recently expanding to residential exterior design.

Natale was named Interior Designer of the Year at both the 2014 and 2011 Belle Coco Republic Interior Design Awards and won the Best Residential Interior award in 2013. He has been shortlisted and commended in the Australian Interior Design Awards, the Interior Design Excellence Awards, the Belle Coco Republic design awards, and the Dulux Colour Awards.

Known for his bold, sophisticated style, use of colour and pattern, and warm, layered interiors, Natale said minimal was firmly out, with rich interiors the key direction for the year ahead.
