The man who murdered his partner of 16 years, well-known interiordesigner Stuart Rattle, was a pathological liar known as "The TalentedMr Ripley", a court has heard.
Chief Crown Prosecutor Gavin Silbert, SC, told the Supreme Court onMonday that Michael O'Neill strangled Mr Rattle as an "act offinancial self preservation".
Mr Silbert said O'Neill was trying to cover up for his incompetence, which had been threatening to bankrupt the interior designer'sbusiness.
O'Neill, 48, had told "a cock and bull story" to police for morethan five hours after his arrest before confessing to having killed MrRattle on December 4 last year at the couple's South Yarra apartmentand setting fire to the property four days later to try to cover upthe murder.

O'Neill admitted having taken a saucepan from the kitchen at about 6amand striking Mr Rattle, 53, over the head before wrapping a nylon doglead around his neck.
Mr Rattle begged for his life as he was being strangled.
O'Neill has pleaded guilty to one count of murder and one count of arson.
Mr Rattle's mother, Jill, in an emotional victim impact statement readto the court during the pre-sentence hearing, said O'Neill called herafter the fire to claim Stuart had been trapped upstairs and could notescape.
Mrs Rattle said she believed O'Neill's story and kissed and hugged himto try to comfort him.

Interior designer Stuart Rattle's murderer a pathological liar, court told
A Melbourne man who murdered his male partner of 16 years was so deceitful he never told his family he was gay and people who knew him called him "the Talented Mr Ripley" a court has heard.
Michael Anthony O'Neill, 48, who murdered prominent interior designer Stuart Rattle in December last year lived a lie for five days after the murder, going about his usual routine, the court heard.
Crown prosecutor Gavin Silbert said O'Neill attended dinners, business appointments and even a party - telling friends and clients Mr Rattle, his partner, wasn't feeling well.
O'Neill later admitted to police he killed Mr Rattle by bashing him over the head with a frying pan then strangling him with a nylon dog leash on December 4, 2013.
Mr Silbert told the court O'Neill was a pathological liar.
He said one witness had said O'Neill would frequently say he had done something when he hadn't.
"We used to call him the talented Mr Ripley because he would lie and then get caught up," Mr Silbert quoted the witnesses as saying.
Mr Silbert said O'Neill was not qualified for the job he had of handling the money side of the business he shared with Mr Rattle and killed Mr Rattle in an act of financial preservation.
O'Neill admitted to the murder after police discovered inconsistencies with his story.
A blaze at the couple's apartment on December 9 was originally thought to be the cause of death.

HGTV host and interior designer Taniya Nayak, a UMass Lowell graduate in business marketing, speaks at "Home for the Holidays" event sponsored by UMass Lowell Alumni Relations Office. (Sun photos by Julia Malakie)
It was a fun and energetic night at UMass Lowell's University Crossing as HGTV star and Boston interior designer Taniya Nayak took the stage.
The audience was quick to its feet as Executive Chancellor Jacqueline Maloney introduced Nayak and joined in her entrance dance, a fantastic way to break the ice.
Nayak is no unfamiliar face to the campus. A 1997 alumna of the college, she earned her bachelor's degree in business marketing and went on to receive her master's degree in interior design from Boston Architectural College.
But she is best known as the host of HGTV's "House Hunters on Vacation," "Freestyle," "Design to Sell" and "Restaurant Impossible." Most recently she has appeared on "Oprah," the "Rachael Ray Show" and the "Ellen DeGeneres Show."
During the talk, the proceeds of which went to help raise scholarship funds, Nayak offered DIY holiday decorating tips. Some of Nayak's creative and quick decorating tips were money-saving last-minute ideas that anyone could pull off.
Some of Nayak's suggestions:
Christmas wrapping: Transform an armless chair such as a parsons dining chair by slipping pillowcases over the back of the chair. Wrap a contrasting fabric piece around the pillow case and tie off.
The take-away: Personalize a glass ornament by adding a sticker to it and writing in your dinner guest's name. Put it in a decorative box or bowl and use it as a place card which they can then take away as a personal gift.
Color advice: Stick to the strip! For the indecisive, when it comes to choosing paint color, find a color you love, and use the whole paint spectrum strip for the rest of the home. For example, go three shades up from the color you love in the kitchen for a more dramatic look in a dining room. The whole house will look like you worked with a designer if you stick to the paint sample strip.
