As adept at sumptuous louche grandeur as he is with classic English style, its no wonder that famed British interior designer Nicky Haslam is a favorite of both rock stars and royalty. Born in a Buckinghamshire manor and educated at Eton, he worked for Diana Vreeland at Vogue and raised horses in the American Southwest before returning to England and beginning his career in earnest during the glam-tacular 70s. Lavishly illustrated, the new book "Nicky Haslam: A Designers Life" ($55, Rizzoli) covers his early days, the inspirations that shaped his style and the timeless designs that are his trademark.
You've designed and organized many glamorous events and parties; what's your favorite way to entertain at your own home?
My favorite way to entertain is without constrictions. A dinner for six may morph into 10. Just have an expandable showy first course (say, mousse of foie gras) and a simple main course any form of sausage and plenty of potatoes and salad will do. I like having parties that just go on and nobody bothers with food. Most of all, I like to eat outside whenever possible.
Can you briefly explain your view on the difference between taste and style?
Taste is what you are born with, though you may not know it. Style is looking, learning and refining.
Is there a room or place that you consider the most beautiful you've ever seen?
The hall at the Sanssouci Palace [in Potsdam] is a masterpiece of colors, finishes and false perspective scaling. And Cole Porters tobacco brown library in his Waldorf Towers apartment in New York, designed by Billy Baldwin, took my breath away every time I drank Gibsons with Cole there.
You often repurpose items in unexpected ways. Can you offer some guidance on how to do that?
As a rule, almost anything thats meant to be outside looks good inside. The opposite is, I fear, not so. Indoor things rarely work outdoors, unless youre edging toward the surreal.
The '70s have returned to the fashion world and now to home decor. What should we look for in the attic or the second-hand shop from that period?

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) March 30, 2015
BOKA Powell has completed interior design work for the new Dallas headquarters of Omnitracs, a growing transportation technology firm that relocated from San Diego, Calif. Set on four and a half floors, the sophisticated 106,612 square foot office at 717 N. Harwood houses over 500 employees.
The space tells a powerful story of the companys journey, and celebrates its new location in downtown Dallas, explains Staci Tave, project manager and interior designer from BOKA Powell. We sought to design a creative space that is sophisticated, timeless and supports collaboration.
When entering the space, visitors will immediately see a sculptural monumental stair connecting the 13th and 14th floors. Beyond, a weathered steel-clad reception desk sits in front of a layered, natural wood wall.
Floor-to-ceiling windows offer sweeping views of the Dallas skyline from one side of the office to the other. Open workstations line the windows and have a loft-style feel, with abundant natural light and open-structure ceilings. Directors occupy refined interior offices with transom windows that allow daylight to permeate the space.
We incorporated a mix of refined and raw elements for a business meets industrial theme, says Taylor Brown, designer with BOKA Powell. Industrial metals, polished concrete floors and unfinished ceilings in the workspaces are softened by natural wood accents.
Each level features a similar floor plan, creating continuity, with gathering spaces in the center and coffee bars that serve as touchdown spaces for staff. Open workstations, lounge spaces, huddle rooms and ubiquitous marker boards encourage teamwork.
The Pit Stop, an expansive dedicated lounge space, is divided into three main areas: ping pong and pool table, break room (The Filling Station) with high-top bar and picnic tables, and a collaborative lounge with soft seating and wall-mounted racks for bike storage. Employees may store their bikes during the day, or may borrow company-provided bikes.
We want our employees to take pride in our new corporate environment, and as such, we worked with BOKA Powell to create unique, energizing elements throughout the space that make it a joy to come to work, says John Graham, chief executive officer at Omnitracs. Everything from the striking large-format photographs of significant locations in our history that accent each huddle space to the Pit Stop lounge reflects our heritage and mission to serve the transportation industry.
The blue and orange color scheme is in keeping with the companys brand, creating a vibrant contrast to an overall neutral palette.

This year's Architectural Digest Home Design Show paired with Dining by Design, presented by the Design Industry's Foundation for Fighting Aids, was a spectacular interior designer's dream.
For me it was a jam-packed three days of nonstop learning, inspiration and total design fun. Not only did I have the opportunity to attend Interior Design Camp NY, I met some fun and creative industry professionals.
The Tile Bar's Jacob Herskovits, brand ambassador and director of marketing, was such a pleasure. He was sure to embrace every designer in the showroom at 45 W21st St. Before the designers feasted upon the Tile Bar's stylish and sassy backsplash and flooring offerings, we shared a delectable brunch of fresh pastries, bagels, muffins and mimosas.
On to Pier 94, where Architectural Digest Home Design Show awaited. This is not your typical home show. If you love "Architectural Digest" magazine and the products featured therein, this forum was certainly the place to be. Two of my favorite appliance brands, SMEG and AGA were both exhibiting. Italy's SMEG manufactures state-of-the-art appliances custom designed to your particular style for your home. Whether you desire the retro style of the '50s in your kitchen or a wine fridge that looks like the front end of a vintage automobile for your game room, SMEG can do it. SMEG's signature models bear the British and Italian flags on their retro refrigerators -- also available in bright and retro solid colors.
Innovation and out-of-the-ordinary designs were smattered throughout the exhibit. Aero Pod by artist Dean Jackson grabbed my attention; a modern style storage pod that can be customized for your personal needs. I was particularly drawn to the brandy and cigar storage pod, perfect for storing the Acid blondie and a decanter of your favorite scotch or brandy.
So many new toys intrigued my designing mind. Two of my favorite pieces of art were from two different artists, Delah Brucelli's "Walking the Edge" and Craig Alan's plexi acrylic painted tulle and hay designs.
My designing and column-writing friend from New York, Claudia Jacobs, and I had the privilege of attending the preview event at Dining By Design. This gala fundraising event is where dining room vignette installations are created by some of the top designers in the industry. Furniture, tableware and other items are auctioned off at this event. This year's gala raised more than $650,000 and was held at Pier 92, adjacent to the Home Show.
Some of my favorite dining installations were Essie, designed by Robert Verdi, in which Verdi created centerpieces of Essie nail polish colors. Hermes' colorful Trojan horse collage created a buzz, too. Benjamin Moore designed by HGTV's Design Star Tyler Wisler created a bistro atmosphere and Echo Design's Lost in Print was so pretty in pink.
If you're searching for design inspiration, this event is certainly a spectacular one and well worth the short trip to the Big Apple.
