Tile artist joins interior designer in new showroom - April 9, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

David Blad of Vashon Tile Company now shares a showroom with Roadside Attraction Design Studio.

Local tile artist David Blad has partnered with kitchen and bath designer Judith Neary to open a small joint studio and showroom in town.

In the A-frame building near Thriftway, the two have displayed a variety of kitchen and bath samples tiles, stone slabs, cabinets and more and say they are ready to help homeowners with their building or remodeling projects.

We can give people good direction in a short amount of time, Blad said.

Neary, who owns Roadside Attraction Design Studio and has over 30 years experience in interior design, opened a small studio in the same building as Cafe Luna about a year ago. However, she recently moved to the A-frame after Skunk Works, an art gallery and bike shop, vacated its street-level storefront on Bank Road.

In the larger space, shes now joined by Blad, who owns Vashon Tile Company and has been doing custom tile installations for over 30 years.

Blad is also a well-known tile artist who has exhibited and sold his colorful, handmade and hand-painted tile artwork on the island. Recently hes been creating artwork using a method involving crushed glass on porcelain tile.

Blad noted that while he sometimes puts his more artful installations in local homes, most homeowners stick to traditional tile work for kitchens, baths and other rooms. With help from some contractors who work for him, he says hes completed hundreds possibly thousands of projects in Vashon homes.

I just like (working with) tile, he said. I like the hard surface and the durability of it, the longevity of tile.

A home refreshed - April 5, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Before Jill and Will Geisdorf bought their home on Field Road in Sarasota, they were renting a hip little downtown cottage close to restaurants, nightlife and all the cultural amenities that two busy young professionals could want.

Then, it all changed, said Jill Geisdorf, who is an interior designer with Chic on the Cheap in Sarasota. We were going to have a baby, and almost overnight, our priorities switched to a nice big yard, a house in a family neighborhood, good school district, close to shopping all of those kinds of things.

Will started looking at real estate listings online, and we both began seriously talking budgets. It was clearly time to put down roots.

Will Geisdorf, who works for an investment research firm in Venice, found a home, in a desirable West-of-the-Trail Sarasota neighborhood. He believed they could afford it because it was a foreclosure property, and because the 2,000-square-foot house was built in 1958 and looked it.

It had the original terrazzo floors, old windows, a very old roof, nice yard (somewhat overgrown) on a third-of-an-acre lot, three bedrooms, two baths and a workable floor plan, even though the kitchen was small and closed off from the rest of the house. A bonus was that a previous owner had installed a swimming pool.

They bought the house last June, started renovating immediately while still living in their rented cottage, and moved into their new old house in October, just 11 days before Quinn Geisdorf was born. The blue and white nursery was ready.

We realize there is work in this place to keep us in home-improvement projects for years to come, said Will. But it was a great buy for the neighborhood, and Jill was pretty sure that for $75,000, we could bring the house up to what it should be to fit our needs and lifestyle.

They would end up spending closer to $100,000, which designer Jill will tell you is pretty typical when homeowners set a budget for a major renovation. Actual costs average 15 to 25 percent over the homeowners initial estimate. And some things are a downright luxurious splurge with homeowners disregarding the price tag.

Our splurge was the custom walnut kitchen cabinets and quartz counters, said Jill.

In high-end homes, only the best will do - April 3, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Granite bench tops, feature light fittings, polished timber floors or handcrafted fixtures - it's the details that can make a nice property an outstanding one.

"It's really the combination of features and finishes selected and how they work together that take a room to the next level," Yolk interior designer Nicola Smith says.

"A well-thought-out selection of finishes from flooring, joinery materials and paint colours, through to lighting design and window treatments will result in a fully resolved space.

"The use of pattern and the use of colour in joinery can have an amazing impact. Often keeping the overall design simple will pack a punch if the detailing is immaculate."

McGrath Dickson agent Christopher Dixon says popular home renovation shows have educated buyers who now have high expectations for interior inclusions.

"People are pretty savvy and have an expectation that if they're going to pay a premium to buy a property then a level of investment and workmanship is key," Mr Dixon says.

Luton Properties Gungahlin agent Karen Broadhurst agrees.

"What people are looking for in a large house more than anything else is high-end fittings and fixtures," Ms Broadhurst says.

"They're really looking for high-quality - good LED lighting, outdoor kitchens, double-glazed windows and high-end floor coverings."
