OTTAWA, CanadaInterior designer Tammy Younker was creatively inspired after watching Shen Yun Performing Arts at the National Arts Centre on Dec. 28, 2012.

Its awe-inspiring and educational all at the same time. Its really wonderful, she said.

I love it, it was nothing that I had anticipated.

Ms. Younker has worked as an interior designer for 12 years across a wide variety of industriesfrom residential and commercial projects to hospitality, industrial, and health care.

She said the vibrant and unique colour palette in Shen Yuns costumes was remarkable and inspiring.

The colour combinations are wonderful, Ms. Younker said.

It evokes feeling and sensation and really engages the audience in whats going on onstageits beautiful.

New York-based Shen Yun is a world-renowned classical Chinese dance and music company that aims to revive 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture.

According to its website, the company creates hundreds of new costumes each season and aims to achieve an authentic presentation of the attire that comes from Chinas divinely inspired traditional culture.

Boston interior designer and stylist Erin Gates, best known for her popular blog Elements of Style, just got a book deal. Gates who was dubbed one of The Globes 25 Most Stylish Bostonians back in 2009 has inked a deal with Simon & Schuster to publish an illustrated book slated for release in fall 2014. Her literary agent is the Boston-based Kathryn Beaumont. Its going to be a design and lifestyle book that has a narrative along with it, kind of discussing how the home and your personal style is a reflection of your life story, Gates told us. There will be never before seen pictures of my work, my own space, and some designers I admire. A few of whom, she says, include Celerie Kemble, Miles Redd, and locals Rachel Reider and Liz Caan. Gates, who recently bought a new home, also gave us a design tip for the new year. Im loving a resurgence of brass, especially in kitchens. You can make it look modern or traditional, she says.
