Interior Designer Rex Todd Rogers had his eye on the property at 106 W. Shiawassee Street in Fenton for two years. I had heard that the city owned the property and wanted to tear it down and build a three-story building in its place. I thought it had great bones and I knew I could renovate the space to bring my vision of a design store to life, said Rogers.
Rogers then worked with the city of Fenton to make the property on Shiawassee home to his studio. The interior space was opened up by tearing down walls, adding large windows, and restoring the original hardwood floors. The exterior has a new porch, a garden, and a sitting area. Rogers thinks of the space as the outdoor living room.
He is hosting a grand opening at his new design studio today. Rogers works and travels extensively throughout Michigan, Pennsylvania and other areas of the East Coast shopping for unique period furniture pieces to help with his design projects.

Business background helps interior designer succeed

SNOHOMISH Local interior designer Tanna Barnecut, a design writer for Snohomish Magazine and owner of Tanna By Design, has been named as first-place winner in the 2012 Interior Design Society's Designer of the Year Awards for the category for Kitchens under $49,999.
The Designer of the Year Awards recognize outstanding achievement in residential interior design among Interior Design Society members across the nation. Barnecut has also been honored by the Central Washington Home Builders Tour of Homes and was a Reader's Choice award Best of the Northwest Silver Winner last year.
The project that won an award from the Interior Design Society was a speculative remodel for a Seattle firm that flips homes in the $500,000 to $1 million range. The project house was a dated 1950s era home that had been trashed by the previous occupants.
"The existing floor plan presented fundamental challenges and was in much need of an up-to-date final design," she said.
Barnecut was chosen for the job based on her reputation as an interior designer and her willingness to get the job done quickly. She completed all of the layout drawings, color palettes and plans for the finishes within two weeks.
Barnecut really enjoyed this finished kitchen, she explained, because, although it was in a high-end home, it had elements that people could do in their own homes on a tighter budget. The old kitchen was gutted and a wall removed to offer a more open feeling. The original hardwood flooring was salvaged, but the cabinets had to be replaced and a kitchen island was added.
The finished kitchen caters to today's lifestyle with a much more modern feel, Barnecut said. She offers pictures of the completed work, along with other before-and-after photos, on her Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/tannabydesigninteriors, and website, http://www.tannabydesign.com.

Eric Engstrom, founder of EDG Interior Architecture + Design died June 15 after a long battle with cancer. He was 70.
An award-winning interior designer and graphic artist, Engstrom served as the president of IIDA from 2005 to 2006, was a member of the board of trustees of the Rhode Island School of Design, and was named a member of the Hospitality Design Magazine Platinum Circle.
Engstrom began his career as graphic designer after graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design, and went on to design iconic rock posters for bands like The Who. He later developed a passion for interior design and founded the Engstrom Design Group in 1987 in Marin County, California. Alongside business partner Jennifer Johanson, Engstrom created an acclaimed design firm known for restaurant and hospitality projects around the globe. He retired in 2007 to devote his time to art, travel, and photography.
Eric was a true renaissance manan original hipster who appreciated the undiscovered art in lifeAmerican back roads, stray graffiti, even leftover gift-wrap, Johanson, the firms president and CEO, said in a statement. His passions encompassed Ducati motorcycles, rock and roll culture, great cuisine, Japanese baseball and, of course, interior design. He had a unique way of seeing and sharing what he found through his work.
