Interior Guru Ryan Korbans Neo-Luxe - April 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

If interior designer Ryan Korbans name sounds familiar its because hes super well known in elite design circles. His is a name that filters down slowly so that you might walk round several of his store projects before realizing you absolutely love their looks. Instead of the full-on, solid gold luxury of say, Peter Marino, Mr Korban offers a more, as he puts it, edited version of all-out luxury. Alongside designing stores for Balenciaga, Alexander Wang and Diesel, plus homes for James Franco and Jessica Stam, Mr Korban is adding author to his resume with his new book, Ryan Korban: Luxury Redefined , out today. The Observer sat down with him to get the inside scoop on the book.

Can you tell us about your first book and key anchor points of your design ethos?

The key points of my design aesthetic are Sex, Romance, and Fantasy. They are the three distinct ideas that have really been explored in this book and I have chosen photographs to reflect those ideas.

    How doesNew York inspire you?

How does New York not inspire me? There is so much condensed into such a small city that it is easy to be inspired by every block. I love the retail spaces, the hotels, the skyscrapers, the brown stones, the parks, the bars, and the restaurants, even the Westside highway.

Whats the first thing you think of when you walk into a place youre going to redefine?

What color am I going to paint the walls and what color am I going to stain the floors. I think about that even before floorplan or construction. Without those ideas in place, I cant really focuson anything else.

This is your first book, what was the inspiration for it?

Flea markets a gold mine of vintage beauty - April 13, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The arrival of spring means that flea markets are reopening for business around the country. Shoppers will hunt for treasures amid acres of used goods. A few will come home with just the right vintage art or quirky piece of furniture.

Jaime Rummerfield, co-founder of Woodson & Rummerfields House of Design in Los Angeles, sometimes mixes flea-market finds with new, high-end furnishings to decorate the homes of her celebrity clients.

The beauty of flea markets, she says, is you never know what you will find. Theres nothing like being outdoors or in a place off the beaten path, rummaging through old treasures.

Interior designer Brian Patrick Flynn of Los Angeles, creator of the FlynnsideOut design blog, also hunts for vintage pieces: I shop secondhand regardless of my projects budget or clients level of taste, he says. Vintage and thrift is the best way to add one-of-a-kind flair to a space without insanely high cost.

There is luck involved, of course. But skill also plays a role. As you browse through crowded tables of used things this spring, how can you find the treasures that will give your home an infusion of style while avoiding decorating disasters?

Here, Flynn, Rummerfield and another interior designer who shops for vintage dcor Lee Kleinhelter of the design firm and retail store Pieces in Atlanta tell how they do it.

    When to go

Winter and early spring are perfect for flea-market shopping, Flynn says.

Since thrifting and antiquing are often associated with gorgeous weather and weekend shenanigans, many people shy away from hunting for their vintage finds when its cold or gloomy, he says. So go now and go early.

I usually show up just as the flea market opens to ensure I see every new item as its put out on display, he says. When you wait until the end of a flea markets run to check out its stuff, youre likely to find mostly leftovers, things priced too highly, which others passed over, or things that are just way too taste-specific for most people to make offers on.

Interior designer renovates home show - April 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A bigger, better show that is less expensive for exhibitors is part of the master plan for a revised Powell River Home and Garden show this year.

In the wake of the cancelled home show presented by Evergreen Exhibitions, Leah Rourke, owner of Relish Interiors, has taken a lead role in organizing a new show slated for May 10 and 11 at Hap Parker Arena, Powell River Recreation Complex.

Rourke has seen the show from the inside out as an exhibitor and has now undertaken to organize and promote it on her own.

Its all what you make of it, Rourke said. As a new business owner the home show was an excellent opportunity to meet thousands of pre-qualified potential clients and to grow my business. I planned a sale to run through the week of the show and those were some of my biggest revenue months to date.

The turnout for previous years was estimated by organizers at around 8,000 people over the weekend. Its an excellent opportunity to connect, she said. I still have clients today that I met at the first show.

Rourke stressed that exhibitors need to get creative in how they market for the show. Just hanging a shingle out will not necessarily net the best results, she said. Its important to plan for the event to benefit most. Rourke explained that having a Facebook page isnt enough to drive small business. Getting out and meeting people is a key part of building relationships in the community, building on existing relationships and roping in new customers.

Of 52 exhibitors at the last home show, Rourke said 30 of them were from out of town. She plans on focusing more on local business at this years event. We will develop a presence of local businesses at the show rather than an overabundance of those from out of town. Were not excluding out-of-town businesses but we want to make sure local businesses are well represented.

Proposed changes this year are bigger booths that are less expensive, a possible contest challenging students to build something out of recycled material that would relate to home and garden, and a $5,000 home makeover giveaway. It will be free for those who attend the show, Rourke explained for anyone interested in the giveaway. Five businesses will each donate $1,000 to the makeover and somebody will win it after the weekend.

There will also be the Valley Building Supplies stage where workshops and demonstrations will be ongoing throughout the weekend. Planet Cleve will be running a concession on-site, and Rourke is trying to organize an indoor garden with seating where people can sit down and grab a bite to eat.

We are looking to bring some new creative changes to the show, change that will reflect the changing needs in the marketplaceboth from the consumer perspective and from the view of the business owner, she said. We are looking to engage our audience here and bring in more attendance from the community.
