Nate Berkus Dishes on How to Redecorate Your Space for Spring - March 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

by Emily Popp Fri., Mar. 28, 2014 2:50 PM PDT

Nate Berkus is on a major roll.

The renowned interior designer's spring collection for Target hit stores last month, he scored a gig staring in a Banana Republic ad campaign, and he's a host/judge/producer on NBC's new reality competition series, American Dream Builders. He's also just a really cool guy.

In Nate's new show, designers compete against each other to create the best redesigned home for families. If it sounds both dramatic and uplifting, that's cause it is. Since Nate also acts as one of the show's judges, clearly he is the ultimate person to go to for design advice. So, we did.

We caught up with Nate to find out exactly what he recommends for refreshing your digs this spring, where he goes to find the best deals and why he's not into following trends when it comes to interior design.

NEWS: Spring nail polish + sandals combos

What are your favorite ways to redesign your space for spring? In the spring it's all about outdoor living. Have fun overhauling your yard and take inspiration from your living room, but under the trees. Get an outdoor rug and lots of moveable pieces...stools, cord chairs, over sized pillows for seating. Mirrors help to create the illusion of a bigger space. And put a hammock up. Spring is allabout casual elegance and easy entertaining. The best kind!

What's a really common mistake people make when redecorating? The thing is, design isn't about how fast or cheaply you can do it. Take your timethe best spaces are the ones assembled over time.

Where are your favorite places to shop for affordable home goods?Target, of course. And not just because my own collection is sold there! And I love to shop antiques markets. They are the best for one-of-a kind, vintage finds that feel special.

What are your favorite underground/lesser-known interior design stores?I'm obsessed with ShowPlace Antiques on 25th Street in New York. It's the first place I go to when I'm looking for a gift, or for something unique for a design project.

Home makeover show back on TV3 - March 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

TV3s home makeover show Nevilles Doorstep Challenge is back for a third series next month with Crown Paints and DoneDeal on board as sponsors.

Under the format, interior designer Neville Knott revamps the tired and datedhomes of eight participants in a two-day challenge and on a strict maximum budget of 1,000, with the money provided by the sponsors.

The programme is made for TV3 by Vision Independent Productions (VIP), the maker of Operation Transformation and The Hit, and is billed as an interior design show for the times we live in.

Filming on the new series begins this weekend, and the first three homes have already been selected, but the producers are inviting any homeowners who are keen on participating in the later episodes to contact them at doorstep@mipmg.tv with the subject line application request.

Crown Paints has sponsored the series from the beginning, but this is the first year that DoneDeal has decided to back it. The classifieds site is hoping to spark redecorators and upcyclers interest in its House and DIY listings through its association with the show, which will feature furniture and other items bought via the site.

Executive producer Philip Kampff, the managing director of VIP, said the two brands were organic to the objective of the show.

Knott , who heads up the Bachelor of Arts degree in Interior Design at the Dublin Institute of Technology, has worked as a consultant for a number of Irish companies over the years, including Clerys department store. He also has the title of head of trend colours for Crown Paints.

His broadcasting career began 12 years ago, when he presented Beyond the Hall Door for RT and he counts Open House, Showhouse and Roomers on his television CV.

The home makeover television genre remains popular on Irish screens, with Nevilles Doorstep Challenge securing an average of 180,000 viewers in its Friday 8pm slot last year.

Meanwhile, VIP recently received its first series order from the UK market, after ITV2 commissioned Viral Tap, a comedy panel show co-production with Yalli Productions that will be anchored by presenter Caroline Flack.

Working on the First Coast: Sisler Johnson Interior Design helps makes more than just profit - March 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Sisler Johnston Interior Designs was opened 30 years ago but has branched out into a business that specializes in detailing the inside of buildings. It reaches well beyond the First Coast and also includes charitable work.

Owner Judith Sisler Johnston has a long history in the Jacksonville area. The business manages to generate about $4 million in annual revenue from her offices off Philips Highway on Florida Mining Boulevard South. But she went through two careers as a teacher and then a psychologist before settling on her current job path.

Johnston is a Florida licensed interior designer and a member of the American Society of Interior Designers. That came after a brief stint in real estate.

However Johnston first entered the workforce after getting an education degree and working as a teacher. Then after getting her masters degree in psychology from Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo., she worked in that field with clinical, hospital and private practice patients for four years in Chicago.

It was her move to Jacksonville in 1977 that started her on the path to interior design and shes since handled projects from large commercial complexes for which she might charge $25,000 for a 50,000-square-foot project, to remodeling interiors at hotels and resorts. Most of Johnstons business is in the Southeastern United States, though shes done projects in Arizona, Colorado and Texas.

Beyond her commercial work, which has included designing the interior of corporate jets and residential space for the U.S. embassy in the Bahamas, Johnston continues to branch out by providing work for charitable organizations. Shes provided design work for HabiJax homes and Builders Care, the charitable wing of the Northeast Florida Builders Association.

Youre a very skilled interior designer. What compels you to work with charitable projects?

Just the opportunity to give back to the community of Jacksonville and the opportunity to demonstrate love for God and other people by helping. And its a good fit for me.

Whys that a good fit for you?

Because Im in the design and furnishings business. I have stuff and I have talents and materials that they need for projects like that. For me to furnish a little old ladys house who got burned out and has no furnishings, I know where to get it.
