Chicago-area interior designer Leslie M. Stern understands how to create accessible environments with style.

"When Eileen hired me, she told me she was moving from a large home in the suburbs to a condo," Stern said. "To make it more accessible for her and her husband, we first had to work on renovating the kitchen and the bathroom."

Once a Chicago public high school art teacher to deaf and hard of hearing students, Stern used her experiences to design barrier-free interiors in homes and buildings.

"It depends on the disability, sometimes many physical changes have to be made, but many of them are just common sense," she said. "Selecting materials that are safer for anybody to use."

Issues with client Eileen's home were physical, visual and safety.

"It's didn't have enough lighting, the cabinets were not easy to use for someone with mobility issues, the bathrooms - we wanted something so that there would be less chance to fall," Stern said. "The bathroom is the most dangerous room in the house."

"After we were done with the renovation, we worked on the furniture," Stern said. "We used as much furniture as we could, but we re-purposed it, re-upholstered it, built up the cushions so that it gives better support."

"Eileen does have some low-vision issues, she wanted to have recess lighting but sometimes that can be glary, so we did it with fluorescent lights so we don't have the heat issues," Stern said.

"I worked on flooring because that was very important, so making sure we have floors that are not slippery easy to walk on, eliminating a lot of the thresholds," she said.

Interior designer and Minnesota native Melissa Roche, now based in Las Vegas with her company Parlor 430 on East Sahara, was crowned Season 2 champion of HGTVs Brother vs. Brother on Sunday night.

I caught up with Roche the Tuesday after her victory, and she talked about twin-brother hotties Drew and Jonathan Scott, excitement about SLS Las Vegas opening next month and what shell do with the $50,000 first-place prize.

It was expected that the fabulous Tour de France would inspire Yorkshire folk to dust down their bikes and take up cycling. But it wasnt expected to provide inspiration for a room scheme at a brand new homes development!

Yorkshire based interior designer Jeanette Holmes is currently working on the interior scheme for Miller Homes latest show home at its new development; Quercus Green at Harrogate.

Tour de France fever has been fantastic for weeks in Yorkshire and culminated spectacularly when the race got underway, said Jeanette. It seemed a perfect tribute to mark the occasion in our lovely show home and was a perfect way to show prospective buyers how they can incorporate hobbies and interests into room schemes with taste and simplicity.

The four bedroom show home has incorporated the popular vintage theme throughout its rooms and this is reflected in the cycling inspired guest room. There are bike patterned soft furnishings, old fashioned bike wall prints and a few modern day pieces of cycling memorabilia too.

Its been a real pleasure creating a vintage inspired show home and reflecting our counties pride at hosting such an iconic sporting event, said Jeanette. It was an important part of Yorkshires history and now it can form part of Miller Homes too.

There will be 74, three, four and five bedroom homes built Quercus Green, located on Bogs Lane, Harrogate, HG1 4EB. The sales centre is open Thursday Monday, 10.30am to 5.30pm.
