TV shows cram big-time designs into small spaces - July 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

"When good design happens, you just don't notice it," said Kathy Kuo, New York-based interior designer. Good design _ sometimes deemed the je ne sais quois of interior design and architecture _ is the intent behind two series premiering on television Wednesday night and now available online at fyi.tv.

"Rowhouse Showdown" and "Tiny House Nation" are renovation and design shows that are part of the summer launch of the rebranded FYI Network, formerly known as Bio. FYI, a division of A+E Networks, stands for "for your imagination, inspiration and innovation" and focuses on four categories: food, style, relationships and homes.

The two new entrants are diving into a crowded pool filled with firmly established shows from HGTV, DIY, TLC and Bravo, but Gena McCarthy, senior vice president of programming at FYI and an executive producer for both shows, contends that her network intends to capture the attention of a younger audience than that of the other networks _ viewers with a median age of 40, primarily Gen X and Gen Y, who are big users of social media.

"They look for creative inspiration in Pinterest, Etsy and Houzz.com," McCarthy said.

"Some of the things that we think are relevant to this audience include how to get their first foot on the property ladder," she said. The network looked closely at the lifestyles that its target viewers were interested in such as the small-house movement, thrift style and things that are organic, recycled or authentic, she said.

Later this summer, FYI will debut "Red Hot Design," which features Shasta Smith, chief designer, welder, creator and entrepreneur of a furniture and artwork shop based in Sacramento. Smith and her crew will turn materials such as airplane wings and motorcycle hubcaps into furniture and art for clients.

FYI's foray into home renovation and design shows comes at a time when the housing market is slowly recovering.

"I don't think the recovery has hit everywhere," said Donna MacLetchie, an executive producer for Jane Entertainment, which produced "Rowhouse Showdown."

"That's kind of what we wanted to shine the light on. A lot of homes we're featuring are on the verge ... of a comeback."

Here, we take a closer look at FYI's maiden voyage into home renovation shows:

Peckvonhartel reshapes working life at the Australian Communications and Media Authority - July 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Australian Communications and Media Authority, a government authority responsible for monitoring media coverage, had been operating from three levels within a tower at 360 Elizabeth Street, above Melbourne Central.

While these levels provided impressive views of Melbourne, the diamond-shaped floor plates were relatively inefficient.

The office arrangement reflected practices from decades ago, says Joshua McAlister, senior design architect at Peckvonhartel, who worked closely with interior designer Angela Welch on this project. "There was no connectivity between the levels, except for the fire escape."

ACMA subsequently moved a few levels below its former workplace and now occupies two levels, connected by an internal staircase.

One of the main concerns with the refit of these levels was to break down the previous style of working, with a series of pod-like workstations centred on a meeting table.

We were finding that staff working adjacent to these pods formed their own niche," says McAlister. "And at lunchtime, everyone took a lift to the cafes at ground level."

The two floor plates ACMA now occupies represent one-third less space. But what it has gained in the move is substantial. As well as breaking down the pod-like arrangement, the workstations have been located at the periphery of each floor, allowing for greater natural light, as well as sharper views of the city and surrounds.

This arrangement is combined with glass-fronted interior offices at the core of each level, occupied by more senior staff.

Jimmy Choo Founder Sues Interior Designer — Your Work Isn't Fit for a Frat House - July 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    EXCLUSIVE

The woman who co-founded Jimmy Choo just scored a legal victory against her famous interior designer, claiming he charged her around $2 MILLION for work that "would not be acceptable in a college frat house."

Tamara Mellon's designer lawsuit against Martyn Lawrence Bullard-- who appeared on Bravo's "Million Dollar Decorators" -- will NOT be dismissed ... so ruled an L.A. judge on Wednesday.

Mellon claims Bullard is a media whore who flaunts his A-list clientele -- including Christina Aguilera, Cher, Aaron Sorkin and Eva Mendes-- and then grossly overcharges and delivers a shoddy product.

Mellon hired Bullard to decorate her swanky NYC apartment and her Hamptons home. She says when he was done, bookshelves were falling apart, a wall speaker was painted over, wallpaper was peeling off walls, the chandelier was dangling like a death trap, and on and on.

To make matters worse, she claims he was grossly over budget for the Hamptons house and when she complained he said, "I cannot possibly work on a limited budget."

Mellon says in her lawsuit -- filed by Eric George -- Bullard had the audacity to charge $35,000 for 8 chairs that he bought from a mall chain store.

And get this ... she says he misjudged the size of a piece of marble he ordered for her NYC apartment, so it had to be lifted by crane. She says he not only charged her to foot the bill for the crane fee, he added a 67% fee for himself.

They appeared together -- huggy huggy and kissy kissy -- back in 2011 on Bullard's Bravo show, "Million Dollar Decorators."
