NYCThis year's Kips Bay Decorator Show House, the decades-old annual project in which interior designers kit out an absurdly lavish mansion, will take over the north wing of the Villard Mansion, an 1884 McKim, Mead & White design that was renovated in 2011 and is currently seeking retail tenants. The list of designers hasn't been announced yet, but it's safe to assume these 20+ rooms within the Renaissance-style structure will be filled to the brim with gold-leaf Venetian plaster, geometric ombr sinks, fish-themed wallpaper, and other such typical Kips Bay flourishes. The showhouse opens to the public on May 1; proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club youth organization. [CurbedWire Inbox]

NYCHouse Beautiful's fifth annual Chair Chase will take place this Wed., March 12 in New York. The magazine's going for an eco-friendly twist this time around: all 20 chairs are sustainably produced by manufacturers ranging from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams to Kravet. Follow House Beautiful on Twitter (@HouseBeautiful) on Wednesday for clues about where in the city these pretty perches landas always, it's finders, keepers. More info, right this way. Bening and Harris Have Excellent Chemistry in The Face of Love - March 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    2014 - IFC Films

    Ed Harris and Annette Bening

Arie Posin's romantic drama tips its hand when we see that protagonist Nikki (Annette Bening), a widowed interior decorator, has chosen posters for Andrei Tarkovsky's Nostalghia and Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo for the house she's currently sprucing up. This is moments before she first sees Tom (Ed Harris), a dead ringer for Nikki's late husband, Garrett (also Harris).

The Face of Love is also a few color gels away from being this decade's remake of Douglas Sirk's All That Heaven Allows, as Nikki embarks on a relationship with Tom that doesn't defy contemporary taboos about age or ethnicity but instead is borderline necrophilic, while she lies to Tom about her past and tries to hide him from her adult daughter, Summer (Jess Weixler), and Nikki's lovesick, perpetually friend-zoned neighbor, Roger (Robin Williams).

Bening and Harris have excellent chemistry, and the deeply objectified Tom gets an interior life, particularly in his touching relationship with his own, still-alive former spouse (Amy Brenneman).

Wisely shrugging off the question of how Garrett and Tom can be identical, The Face of Love becomes a study of a woman gradually losing her grip on reality, thanks to the universe playing a seriously dirty trick on her.

'We Gave Leonardo DiCaprio His Best 'Gatsby' Line,' Say Production Designers - March 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Leonardo Di Caprio got one of his best lines in The Great Gatsby thanks to production designer Catherine Martin and set decorator Beverley Dunn, the two revealed at Hollywoods Egyptian Theater Mar. 1, where a near-capacity crowd braved torrential rain to hear the 2013 Oscar nominees for production design explicate their craft, presented by The Art Directors Guild in association with the American Cinematheque and THR, moderated by production designer Thomas A. Walsh and set decorator Rosemary Brandenburg.

Baz Luhrmann is never happier than when hes rearranging the flowers, said Martin. He said, We love the flowers, but we need more -- ten times more. Leo said, Oh, this is ridiculous! Where will we get all these orchids? But he got to ad lib that line, Do you think its too much? and he always gets a laugh on that, so hes happy.

PHOTOS: Oscars: 25 Best Tuxedos of All Time

With Lurhmann, said Martin, The budget keeps getting smaller and the ideas just get bigger. And when the dp says, Well only shoot this part of the set, its a total lie.

Her production designer K.K. Barrett and set decorator Gene Serdena said director Spike Jonze objected to the rug in Joaquin Phoenixs recently divorced, commitment-phobic character Theodores apartment. Spike said, We dont know if Theodore would be able to commit to a rug,'" said Serdena. "And K.K. had a master stroke -- What if we rolled it up and kept it propped up against the wall?

I know what David [O. Russell] likes, said American Hustle production designer Judy Becker, his frequent collaborator, who with set decorator Heather Loeffler crafted 140 sets for the film, but he always wants to shoot 360 [degrees], and in a period movie that can be a challenge. Becker and Loeffler transcended the challenge, having worked on 11 films together.

For Gravityproduction designer Andy Nicholson and set decorators Rosie Goodwin and Joanne Woollard, the tough part was, as Nicholson put it, so many problems had to be solved that had never been done beforea total pain in the ass. To convey the characters of the six astronauts who die early in the film, so the audience never meets them, Goodwin exhaustively researched NASA photo troves and studied what kind of people want to spend their lives in space. Goodwin said the character-revealing items in the film include crazy things -- an Australian speed limit sign, car registration, postcards from all over the world, chess sets.

The cost on every prop had a point value attached to it, added Goodwin. The VFX budget was not huge, said Nicholson.

The budget on 12 Years a Slave was not huge either, and production designer Adam Stockhausen said, There was huge pressure to get it right. That was particularly tricky, said set decorator Alice Baker, because the movie had to look different than the big recent films about the same period, which used up much of the limited supply of plantation-era locations. Django was filming and filming and filming, and Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Killer had been there, so I really had to beat the bushes, said Baker.

    STORY HIGHLIGHTS

(CNN) -- Shelves full of knickknacks, chairs piled precariously atop tables, dusty toys dangling from the ceiling and barely enough floorspace to set a foot down: It's a scene that's caused more than one shopper to flee a flea market.

"Like where your garage is just thrown up in your face? I get that." said Kristie Rackliffe, an antique dealer at the Queen of Hearts antique mall in Buford, Georgia.

But there's no need to fear the antique mall, say some thrifting pros, if you know what you're looking for and how to navigate through a seeker's paradise to get to it. Just be prepared to pay more at those fancy booths that don't require mountain climbing equipment.

Decorating Tips to Transform Your Place into a Palace - February 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Most people who like to be fresh and fashionable with their wardrobes also like tofeel up to date with their homes. But unless you have an unlimited budget and can afford to pay an interior decorator more than $150 per hour, decorating can be time-consuming, expensive and stressful. Especially if you are just starting out.

So many styles to choose from. The soft, inviting textures of Classic Contemporary, to the simplified shapes of the Modern look; or for the artsy types, how about the mixing and matching of old and new furniture to achieve the eclectic style. You can go round and round until your head starts to spin.

Lets just say youre lucky enough to settle on a style. Then the real headache begins. How do you arrange the furniture in your house or apartment? When does stuff become clutter?

What color do you choose? And if you commit to purchasing a pillow, what does that say about your personal taste? To make your life easier, we asked the kings of home dcor for some simple tips. Susan Feldman, co-founder of One Kings Lane, the online retailer for home decor and furniture thats now valued at almost $1 billion, sat down with ABC News chief business & economics correspondent Rebecca Jarvis, who also hosts the hit digital show Real Biz.

Here are some tips from Feldman on how to transform your place into a palace. And three major decorating mistake to avoid.
