Four Arts panel examines American style - February 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

If youre searching for a piece of furniture that perfectly exemplifies American style, look no further than the rocking chair, interior decorator Thomas Jayne said Thursday during a panel discussion at The Society of the Four Arts.

It conveys comfort and hospitality, he said. It appears on the rich persons porch and on the poor persons porch.

It also was invented in the United States an example of the sort of American creativity, and lack of pretense, that was a recurring theme during the discussion, titled American Genius: What is American Style?

Jayne joined culinary historian Jessica B. Harris and American culture writer Julia Reed on the panel, which was moderated by Four Arts President Ervin Duggan in the newly renovated Gubelmann Auditorium.

What is distinctive about us? We are a nation of nations, forged from many streams of culture, Duggan said. We are a people who trace our origins to many, many traditions.

The panelists all agreed that this melting pot of cultural influences has helped to define American style in several areas, including cuisine, social manners and decorating. The last topic was an especially prominent focus of the discussion.

Jayne, who runs Jayne Design Studio in New York City, noted that, more often than not, Americans want comfortable homes that capture their individual personalities. They also want to be surrounded by things they enjoy.

Americans value comfort, and they value eclecticism, he said. They have the luxury of having almost anything they want in their home.

Decorations dont all have to be expensive, he added. In his home, for example, Jayne has combined items of high pedigree and some less so. He also pointed to the home of one of his former mentors, the late decorator Albert Hadley of Parish-Hadley Associates, who also surrounded himself with the things he loved, whether valuable or not.

In America, you can have a fine room without a tremendous outlay, Jayne said.

Court tells AT&T's Aio to put down the magenta in T-Mobile trademark case - February 8, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Any interior decorator will tell you, there's a fine line between blush and bashful. Unfortunately for Aio Wireless, the same can't be said of plum and magenta -- at least not in a court of law. T-Mobile announced today that a Federal Court in Texas has ordered the AT&T subsidiary to stop using a "plum color as a central part of its trade dress," as it is "confusingly similar" to its own trademark magenta.

According to court documents, T-Mobile claims the Plum in question, Pantone 676C, is so similar to its own Pantone Process Magenta that it "dilutes its strength and likely causes confusion among consumers." The court's preliminary injunction will prevent Aio from using large swaths of the offending plum color and "confusingly similar shades" in advertising, marketing and store design.

T-Mobile brought the suit against the pre-paid carrier, which is owned by its competitor AT&T, last summer, just months after its initial launch. While the difference between plum and magenta may be evident to most, court documents show that AT&T's branding company raised concerns about the shade during a vetting process that included focuses groups and extensive consideration of other carriers' color schemes.

Another house sells on Parc Monceau - February 8, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Three houses have changed hands within four months on Parc Monceau, a lake to-sea cul-de-sac of just seven homes on the South End.

The latest property to sell is No. 124, which faces the lake and, like its neighbors, was developed a half-century ago by the late builder Clarence Mack.

Two limited liability companies were involved in the transactions recorded Jan. 31 at $4.975 million of the six-bedroom house built in 1962. The first company was Greenway Financial Group LLC, an entity controlled by sellers Scott and Jayne Wilson Schroeder of Ridgeway, N.J. That company had paid a recorded $4.5 million for the quarter-acre property in 2008.

On the buyers side was a Florida LLC named after the propertys address and managed by attorney and businessman Charles D. Barnett of Palm Beach Gardens, whose name is attached to dozens of business entities in state records.

Broker Lawrence Moens of Lawrence A. Moens Associates handled both sides of the sale. He declined to comment.

Built in same Palm Beach Regency style as the other homes on the street, the renovated house has a little more than 7,000 square feet of living space, inside and out.

The company that bought the house, 124 Parc Monceau LLC, was registered with the state in August. Moens listing in the local multiple listing service shows that the house went under contract in October and had been leased prior to its sale.

Other recent sales in the neighborhood: In September, 1720 S. Ocean Blvd. an oceanfront house at the opposite end of Parc Monceau sold privately for a recorded $5.35 million in a deal that saw broker Brandon Rinker of Rinker Realty acting for both sides. He represented his grandmother, longtime Palm Beacher Ruby S. Rinker, who used a revocable trust to buy the 1959 house from Jerome and Barbara Glazer.

A month later, a trust affiliated with interior decorator Luis Lapitz sold No. 115 for $4.35 million to a Florida corporation, 145 Anchor Properties of Vero Beach Inc., which has an address in England. Brandon Rinker brought the buyer for the renovated 1960 house, and Moens had the listing.

None of the three properties that sold is adjacent.

Gwyneth Paltrow thinks inside the box for interior design - February 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By Nedahl StelioFeb. 4, 2014, 5:45 p.m.

What would we do without Gwyneth Paltrow? First she tells us how she manages her busy day, what with dropping two kids off at school and a singing lesson. Now she shares this gem of a lifestyle idea - the Room in a Box .

What would we do without Gwyneth Paltrow? First she tells us how she manages her busy day, what with dropping two kids off at school and a singing lesson. Then she publishes a Christmas gift guide where my favourite suggestion was a 24 carat gold, horn-shaped speaker. Now she shares this gem of a lifestyle idea the Room in a Box on her GOOP newsletter.

It is exactly what it sounds like. A Room. In a Box. It's evolved from the online content of wsroominabox.com, offering the expert advice of Windsor Smith Gwyneth's go-to interiors gal to decorate an entire room, all delivered in one small, neatly ribboned, blue box.

If you're unsure how to deck out a particular space in Gwynnie's case it was a sitting room with a grand piano in it, naturally all you need to do is send off the specs of the room along with anything helpful about your preferred style. Gwyneth submitted a whimsical mood board, then answered a 10-minute questionnaire on how she wanted to use the room. A few weeks later, the aforementioned blue box arrives in the mail, containing everything you need to decorate your room. Kind of.

You get a storyboard, a room plan, a list of exactly what furniture to buy (there are three budget options), and what fabric/wall coverings/paint selections you need.

All for the measly (cough, cough) price of $1250-$7500, depending on the size of the project.
