Switching to Fiji time at Malolo -
June 11, 2014 by
Mr HomeBuilder
It's an unfortunate start. A choppy dark blue sea and a moonless Fijian sky.
The nose of the water taxi rises and falls, hitting the water like a brick on concrete. Boatman Api peers out into the blackness, keeping a watch out for hazards on the 40-minute trip from Fiji's main island to Malolo Island.
I feel I've made a serious mistake.
I pull my one-year-old closer to my chest, trying to stop her rockmelon-sized head from bobbling about, while my partner wraps his arms tighter around our three-year-old.
The exhaust fumes are making me queasy - then we arrive at the jetty and see the singing staff, who after their welcome song shout "Bula! Bula!"
Malolo Island Resort operations manager Zack Vonotabua hands out peppermint-scented wet towels and joins us for a pineapple drink at the Beach Bar on the water's edge.
"How was your boat trip over?" says Zack, as he holds the glass and straw in place for my youngest girl.
Before I get a chance to explain that it was choppy, my daughter starts vomiting over Zack's arm and then the chair, seat cushion and the table.
It's an odd first encounter with Malolo but the perfect introduction, I soon realise, to this small island resort.
The seasickness "event" demonstrates how the staff here make one feel instantly embraced into a new family - they are as concerned about my little one as I am.

Recalling lunch with Maya Angelou -

Maya Angelou, shown speaking at SUNY New Paltz in 2003, twice had lunch with Kingston's Haynes Llewellyn. Angelou died Wednesday.Times Herald-Record file

KINGSTON Haynes Llewelyn was a freshman in college when he first had lunch with Maya Angelou.
It was, he said, a delightful experience, one that only was magnified a half dozen years later when he had met her again.
Angelou, who died Wednesday, already was a well-known poet and author in 1984. That was when Llewelyn, now a Kingston interior decorator, was assigned to read her most famous book, "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," as part of a summer reading list before he began attending Birmingham Southern College in Birmingham, Ala., in 1984.
She came to the school and gave a reading. There were about 300 people in the audience.
"She had a beautiful voice. She read, and nobody moved."
Afterward, Llewellyn and some other students were invited to join Angelou for lunch.
"She was terribly nice. She'd been raised by a strong grandmother. We had that in common, we spoke about it."

There is some major drama brewing in Beverly Hills. According to Us Weekly, both pageant queen Joyce Giraud and outspoken Wiccan Cartlon Gebbia have been fired from the "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" and won't return for Season 5.
According to the report, multiple sources have confirmed the two ladies have been informed they won't be coming back to the hit Bravo series after being on for only one season each.
Gebbia, a British interior decorator and mother of three, was definitely one of the most unconventional housewives the series has seen, causing a stir with strippers at dinner parties and not being shy about describing her sexual fantasies.
She also famously clashed the most with original "RHOBH" Kyle Richards, who thought Cartlon put a curse on her family and later engaged in a battle of words accusing the Wiccan of being an anti-Semite.
Giraud herself was no stranger to controversy. The actress and former beauty queen constantly butted heads with Beverly Hills vets Brandi Glanville, Yolanda Foster and Lisa Vanderpump and just never really hit her stride with the group.
Carlton and Joyce may not be the only RHOBH saying goodbye. Reports have been swirling powerhouse Lisa Vanderpump wants out too. Say it isn't so!
So far no official word on who will replace the exited ladies but hoping to see all the original ladies of Beverly Hills back for the upcoming season.

A property listing says it, so it must be true: "some people" say that Twin Silo Farm is "perhaps the most beautiful property in Bucks County. Could those people be interior decorator Andrew Hartnagle andretired investment banker Wayne Stork, who bought the much-added-to circa-1710 stone farmhouse for $4.1M back in 1988, and have since elevated it to the ornately appointed state it's pictured in today? If so, it'd be hard to begrudge them a bit of pride in their baby. Even leaving the residence aside, the 100-acre grounds alone are gorgeous enough to command a $20 price of admission (with all proceeds going to something called Bucks Beautiful Bulbs). To wit, said grounds, which were part of the original William Penn Land Grant, contain a "resort-style heated pool," a "spa," a "privately situated tennis court," a "tranquil pond of more than 2 acres," a "small scale barn," "ample green space for grazing animals," an "entertainment pavilion with reflecting pond," and the pice de rsistance, a "whimsical full-scale hedge maze." An impressive hunk of green, to be sure, but can it earn this estate a $10.5M ask?
The 6,756-square-foot, six-bedroom fieldstone home is named after the two stone silos added on to it back in 1781. Only the "highest quality materials and finishes" have been used therein, and according to the listing, what this amounts to inside is a "cozy English sensibility." But anyway, to the lawn:

The bitch is back...and on the prowl! After three seasons away from The Real Housewives of New Jersey, former series star Dina Manzo is back with a vengeance in season sixand Us Weekly has an early look at what kind of drama awaits her over the next few months.
PHOTOS: Former Real Housewives
As seen in this exclusive footage from the Bravo show, Manzo will try her hand at dating following her separation from her husbandin February 2013. The two were married for seven years, so the Project Ladybug founder, 41, has been out of the game for quite some time.
PHOTOS: Before they were Real Housewives
"When I pictured myself 40-something, this was not what I was expecting," she confesses. "The last time I had to get naked in front of a guy, I was 28 years old...There's definitely anxiety around that."

There's also some nervousness around her daughter Lexi's departure for college. (Lexi, 17, is Manzo's child from her first marriage.) "It's the end of an era as a mom," she says. "Now I just have to worry about my f---ed-up pets."
PHOTOS: Biggest Housewives fights ever
Manzo's RHONJ comeback follows the departure of her estranged sister, Caroline, who left the series after five seasons last October. Announcing her return in previews for upcoming episodes, the interior decorator says cheekily, "The bitch is back, and if you don't like it, you can kiss my ass."
