Game, set, matching ottomans: Venus Williams turns from tennis to interior design - November 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

JUPITER, Fla. This is what you get when you hire Venus Williams as your interior decorator: an enthusiastic designer who has traveled the world, drawing inspiration from Moscow to Beijing, but has never quite had time to complete formal training; a team of professionals working with her; and a place on a client list that includes celebrities and professional athletes.

And, of course, you get Venus Williams.

Shes one of the greatest tennis players of all time: winner of seven Grand Slam singles titles and Olympic gold, a woman who changed the face of modern tennis. Her father gave her a racket when she was just 4 years old and told her she was going to become the best player in the world.

Most people decide what they want to do later in life, and some people know really early, she says. For me, what I was doing was already decided. Thankfully, I liked it. But that was her fathers dream, not hers. This was like when you get to make your own choice about what you love.

And Williams loves, loves, loves designing. She talks about space planning, construction, lighting and fabric swatches like nobodys business. In fact, it is a business: For more than a decade, she has quietly run an interior design firm in her adopted home of Florida, both capitalizing on and overcoming her famous name.

On Friday night, shell be in Washington for the unveiling of her latest work: the renovated Southeast Tennis and Learning Center, an after-school tennis, arts and academic program created for children in Ward 8. Other people at the gala will see her as the tennis legend; shes there as the person responsible for the look and feel of the space.

As a designer, you design and its beautiful and people feel great when they walk in but how have you changed the world? she asks. For us, this sort of project means so much to us because its going to impact so many lives.

    An intense education

Williams had been playing tennis for 14 years and was two years away from her first Wimbledon and U.S. Open singles titles in 2000 when a letter arrived on her doorstep when she was 17 or 18. She cant remember if it was addressed to her or was a random solicitation, but it invited her to study art and design at a technical school in Tampa.

Oh, I want to go to design school! she remembers telling her mom. She loved being creative: She grew up sewing and still has the homemade skirts she made for her first professional tournament at age 14.

Five tips from Tory Burch's new book - November 7, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

'Tory Burch In Color' is a personality-packed scrapbook of inspirations, interiors and travel photos, with a foreword by American Vogue's editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. We've parsed the new book for takeaway tips

    BY Lisa Armstrong | 07 November 2014

Tory Burch: self-made billionaire, stylist par excellence, charity fundraiser and mistress of no-make-up make-up - what's not to emulate?

It's not always easy emulating perfectly made-up, charitable, flawlessly-dressed billionaires, is it, though? Especially ones with immaculate homes. These are not fail-safe, havens of timid griege, by the way, but personality-packed cocoons of colour and pattern. So we were hoping that her new book, Tory Burch in Color (Abrams, 45) would be a step-by-step guide to Tory colourfulness. However, it's more of a scrapbook of what influences her, albeit one with a foreword by Anna Wintour.

Very sophisticated we're sure, and lovely to look at, certainly. But we want tips. To that end we've parsed the book for some. Here are the five most useful.

    1. Pink doesn't have to be girly. Au contraire, Jeff Koons tells Burch in her book that he associates it with sexuality. Clearly it depends on the shade - but soft, dusty pinks can look strong contrasted with khaki, navy, grey, chocolate and even mustard. Burch's father, Buddy, always incorporated a dash of pink in his outfits.

    2. When it comes to mixing colours and patterns, whether in the home or an outfit, you could do a lot worse than study the way great artists clash and layer. Matisse, by the looks of things, would have been a great interior decorator. Don't be afraid to throw things off a little with a dash of red or a splash of Burch's favourite orange. These colours really warm up both outfits and rooms.

Mike Kledzik: He loved teaching people about wine - November 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Mike Kledzik had a penchant for fine wines, having spent more than three-quarters of his life working in the wine and spirits industry.

"He knew everything about wine and loved teaching people about it," said Bonnie Brown Kledzik, his wife of 16 years, adding he couldn't get through a gathering of friends or families without someone asking him questions about wine. "They would want to know which were the best wines and the difference between the first and second crushing."

As a senior member of the sales team for PRP Wine International, which sells wines from boutique vineyards, he could explain that and more.

The Tavares resident was diagnosed with stage IV kidney cancer a year ago. He died Oct. 30 at 71.

Born in Melvindale, Mich., Kledzik moved with his family to the Orlando area when he was 7. A year later his father died. His mother singlehandedly raised him and his nine siblings. In 1960, he graduated from Bishop Moore High School and later served three years in the Air Force.

Mike and Bonnie met at a singles dance at a Methodist church in downtown Orlando and dated for three years before they married. Although they had their own successful careers, they enjoyed their time together doing things they liked such as travelling especially cruises to Europe, where Mike hosted wine-tasting lectures.

    He enjoyed being around others.

"He loved life and his life was meeting people," said his sister Georgia Bender, 78, of Altamonte Springs. "Once you met him, you felt like you had always known him.Mike was a part of so many people's life, if you had a problem he wanted to know about it and see if he could fix it."

He was active in the community and volunteered during fundraisers for Cornerstone Hospice, St. Paul Catholic Church in Leesburg and served as auctioneer numerous times for Mission Inn Resort & Club's annual Florida Junior Golf Auction.

"He also was a generous soul," said his 68-year-old wife, a retired interior decorator.

It was also said that his two sons Hrehaan and Hridhaan would have their own private space in their dad's new home. Recently, it was reported how Hrithik had roped in a second interior decorator. Now, we hear that the actor has completely taken charge in the making of his new home. Apparently, this is the reason why his pad's redecoration is going on for such a long time. Sources say, the lady designer a foreigner has been shopping overseas for the artefacts and other household stuff, all of which is being supervised by the star himself.

Ironically, Hrithik didn't have to lift a finger to get his earlier home done up because his ex-wife Sussanne Khan is a leading interior decorator. And she had designed their earlier residence, comprising three floors, completely by herself. We texted Hrithik, but he remained unavailable for comment.

Timeless interior design – perfect for protecting your kitchen investment - October 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

(BPT) - Kitchens are the heart of the home. Its where you prepare meals, help your kids with homework and entertain guests. Its the room in the house where everyone gathers, where memories are made, and, with solid investment, can single-handedly increase the value of your home and help you build more of a nest egg. Even if youre considering selling your home, all eyes of prospective buyers will inevitably be on the kitchen.

When making investments in your home, the kitchen is unanimously the best place to start, says Nate Berkus, renowned decorator, designer and artistic advisor for LG Studio appliances. For me, a great kitchen is one that feels timeless. To accomplish that, reach for what feels classic for the space like subway tiles and stainless steel, and allow the elements that tell your story to come through in the non-permanent fixtures like the furniture, fabrics and details.

Here are Berkus five tips for designing a forever kitchen that will sustain its value, whether youre looking to put your house on the market or simply updating it for your familys enjoyment:

    1. A timeless look: When it comes to making big design decisions in your kitchen, put aside trends and go with timeless and elegant. Reach for what feels classic like white subway tiles, brass and stainless steel appliances things that will look as good 10 years from now as they do today. The entire LG Studio line of premium, built-in appliances, for example, was designed with a signature look, feel and style that will easily transition with you through the years.

    2. Paint: I dont know why people always grimace when I say to paint wood. It isnt a cardinal sin, especially in the kitchen. Tearing out cabinets isnt always an option, but painting, while a bit of work, is one of my favorite things to do. Reach for black. It sets off all the appliances and makes for a dramatic change.

    3. Brighten with lights: I tell my clients this all the time lighting is one of the most important decisions you can make in any room, including the kitchen. I love vintage pendant lights over anisland or table. Since lighting can often add to a dated vibe of the space, swapping it out for something more timeless immediately makes the space appear more modernized perfect for illuminating any potential buyers.

    4. The long haul: Making over a kitchen is no small feat. Its expensive and time consuming. Trust me when I say I get it. So, your best asset is information. Start building that Pinterest board to identify what you like. Once you have that, you can start to attach costs. Mine always starts with whats permanent like the cabinets, appliances and tiles. These, along with the appropriate team to help you make and install all of it, are your best investments. From there, consider ways that you can have what you want at a price you can live with. Ive seen the most amazing islands fashioned from unique things like a farm table, or hutches that are free standing on a wall as opposed to extending your cabinets. These can all be ways to get a big look without the big price tag.

    5. Consider technology: The home of the future is actually here today. Its one that is wired for sound, TV and Wi-Fi. Simply put, our kitchen island is command central for more than meal prep. For many of us its also the office. So, to add value to this space, dont undervalue what will make life easier, like outlets that have USB ports in the wall and island, charging docks and TVs. We do so much more in this space than cook. So, to add value, add ways for you be connected ... just not at the dinner table.
