You can visit Britain's Highclere Castle, the stand-in for the popular Downton Abbey of PBS fame, of course, but soon you will be able to stay on the grounds in newly restored buildings called London Lodge.
Restoration included repairing a roof that had given way some decades ago, requiring a thorough drying of interiors, according to the Countess of Carnarvon.
The castle and grounds have been in the family of her husband, the Eighth Earl of Carnarvon, for centuries.
A gateway, north of the estate, was built in 1793 by the First Earl to celebrate of his entry into the peerage. Around 1840, two buildings, connected by a short footpath, were added, and these are what have been transformed into London Lodge.
They were constructed quickly and, as a result, They werent awfully well built, the countess said. Coupled with water damage and overgrowth courtesy of Mother Nature, the redo took about 2 years to complete.
Like any remodeling project, this one took longer than expected because the extent of the damage was unclear at the start. The countess didn't say how much was spent to get the lodges into shape, but, she said, If I had a budget Ive exceeded it tenfold. This was surprisingly dangerous to our pockets.
Its fascinating when you do restore. You have to go back to understand how someone else built it, how they did it and what its purpose was and what you want its new life and new purpose to be.
Its new purpose is as a cozy respite on the grounds of what is one of the most recognizable places in the world, thanks to the popularity of the series, which follows the lives of the fictional Earl and Countess of Grantham and their family members and those who serve them. The fifth season, already broadcast in Britain, starts Jan. 4 in the U.S.
The living area, done in sea-foam greens, roses and warm neutrals, has a sofa that invites you to sink into it as you sit in front of a fire (Chesney's wood burner) and have some tea.
Rather charming prints of owls and birds and whats in nature -- the countess' description -- adorn the walls, which is fitting given its country setting outside of Newbury, about 60 miles west of London. Youll find a TV and Wi-Fi here too.

Honesty in form: Furniture designers Nigel Groom and Emma Fox Derwin. "Everything the designer does must be conscious and considered in a plethora of contexts," Derwin says.
Design for life: Well-Groomed-Fox's Apt shelving, 2014. Lacquered American ash timber, powder-coated steel.
Table talk: Designtree's Chamfer coffee table, 2014. Made from American Ash timber, matt white high-pressure laminate, formica.
Clean lines: Treology's Haast Credenza, 2014. Matai, aged copper and natural oil.
Emma Fox Derwin and Nigel Groom call their Paekakariki business Well-Groomed-Fox and have shown their furniture in design fairs in Cologne, Germany and Milan, London and Belgium.
Now, along with 14 other designers, they are exhibiting in Modern Revivals: Contemporary New Zealand Furniture, at Lower Hutt's The Dowse.
The exhibits all have elements of that fashionable contemporary interior decorator darling, modernist 20th-century design.
"The thing with mid-century modern design is that people love it," Fox Derwin says. "Iconic designs from the era are still being produced and sold. But more than that, designers love mid-century design."
Fox Derwin lectures in industrial design at Massey University's School of Design as well as being responsible, with Groom, an architectural associate, for pieces such as the Cloak Cabinet, with textile rather than wooden walls, and flexible Apt shelving, both on display at the Dowse.

It was an emotional morning for Melissa Rivers on Wednesday as she was honored at The Hollywood Reporter's Women in Entertainment breakfast, making her first red carpet appearance since the death of her mother Joan.

A look inside the life of comedienne and TV personality Joan Rivers
"If my mother were here this morning she'd be sitting at the table beaming while discretely shoving croissants and silverware in her mouth," Melissa joked at the event, where she remembered her mother and fought back tears.
"What use am I to anybody -- especially my mother's legacy -- if I fall apart," Melissa said. "That's not who we are."
Details of Joan Rivers' will were also revealed on Wednesday, which estimated the late comedienne's wealth to be as much as $150 million. She left her fortune to her family and several charities.
"[Melissa] is one of three executors -- the other two were Joan's accountant named Michael Karlin and her interior decorator named Robert Higdon," said probate attorney Herb Nass. "These are the three and under New York law majority rules, so if the other two disagree with Melissa, the two out of three votes would carry the day on whatever issue is before them."
While no specific amounts are given, Joan also left some of her earnings to her publicist Scott Currie and her assistants Sabrina Lott Miller and Jocelyn Pickett.
As for the charities, Rivers gave to God's Love We Deliver -- her winnings on "Celebrity Apprentice" went toward the organization -- as well as California's Guide Dogs for the Blind, the Jewish Guild for the Blind in Manhattan, the Jewish Home and Hospital Federation of Manhattan, the Simon Wiesenthal Center and The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Winter can seem dreary, but don't let the cold weather get you down. Your Home's Solomon Syed has more on how to decorate a more inviting home.
The cold and grey days of winter may be here, but don't let the doldrums of the outside to seep into your home.
"What we like to do is make it cozy. In the winter time, we tend to spend more time in our homes as opposed to the summers when we are outside. So we need to make the house very comfortable and welcoming," said Interior Decorator Denise Maurer.
During the holiday season, it seems easy enough to decorate by pulling out the tree and the garland. After the holidays are over, how do you keep your decor warm and inviting?
Ways to do that are layering. Think of ourselves in winter time: we add layers of clothes. We need to do the same thing with our furnishings and accessories. Pull your furniture away from the wall to create cozy conversational areas, Maurer said.
Adding to the allure of your home isn't just about the visual either.
You can have scents in the house. I make a wonderful potpourri with orange cloves, whole cloves, orange peel, and cinnamon sticks and that will boil away for the whole day and fill your home with warm scents. You can burn candles. You can also have some background music, Maurer said.
While the indoor decor in the winter is much easier to swap out for show, the exterior of your home often is covered in snow and winter. One way to liven up the outside starts at your door.
Your entryway you want to make very warm and inviting. Have an inviting wreath on the door or some welcoming sign. Focus on the entryway. That's where people are arriving and you want to give them the idea that once they get in the door they can expect more of the same, Maurer said.
While everything outside seems so dead and bleak, another way Maurer recommended to keep it lively in your home is with some house plants. And it's an easy change to just replace your dinner table place mats or swap out your art as well.

CLAYTON -- Holiday festivities continue in Clayton with the fifth annual Christmas Home Tour, featuring five area houses appointed with treasure troves of snow globes, nutcrackers, handcrafted decorations, trees with a particular theme, and fragrant garland-wrapped banisters.
There's a blend of sumptuous dcor to a country feel; from old-fashioned to transitional styles.
In the past few days, Shawnda Waite-Lopez has been doing more than her usual multi-tasking as an interior designer and her work in the telecommunications trade; recently spending time -- with glue gun in hand -- affixing bulbs on wreaths to decorate Clayton's downtown, and prepping her home, with its winter wonderland master bathroom, for tour visitors.
"It's the ultimate," says the resident of Crystyl Ranch in Concord. "To have people (visiting) my house is a dream come true."
Her "deck out every year" dcor reflects "the spirit and meaning of Christmas," she says.
Santa's village that sits atop the grand piano in a 10-year-old home tailored to an Old English crowd, and under a chandelier is a burgundy-colored velvet and crme-colored tasseled runner on the dining table.
"It kind of takes you away. It has that feeling," says Waite-Lopez.
Meanwhile, Julie Mancini, also an interior decorator who is a longtime designer at Pottery Barn, has historically been considered for offering family and friends that element of surprise at her Clayton residence, as they gather for the annual ornament exchange or a holiday meal, with its style she describes as transitional.
"It has a look and feel that is warm and comfortable," she says.
"My inspiration is making our house a place to celebrate the holidays," says Mancini, who is also having a raffle to raise more funds for the landscaping project in front of the Clayton Historical Society Museum.

Literarily famous emotion-haver and interior decorator Ayelet Waldman got mad this week at the news that the novel she'd published this year, Love & Treasure, had failed to make the New York Times Book Review's list of 100 notable books of 2014.
OK, so. Obviously this is very jarring to an author, to see a big long list of booksMANY bookson which one's own book has not been included.
But the true and terrible thing is: One hundred books is not so many books! Waldman is not fond of math, but let's do some arithmetic: The New York Times Book Review publishes weekly. There are 52 weeks in a year. So that means that fewer than two books a weekfrom the population of books that have been reviewed in the Book Review (agent, on phone: Great news! You're in the Book Review!)make the cut.
And half of those 100 Notable Books are nonfiction, which leaves only 50 slots for novels and short stories and poetry combined. So we're down to less than one novel a week.
This can be hideously depressing, if you write books. If you write one book, even. At some point in the processafter filing a first draft, maybe, or while awaiting page proofsan author walks into a bookstore and looks around at the sheer number of other books there: book after book after book, on table after table, shelf after shelf. And the same abundance that may previously have been inspiring becomes horrifying; the author senses very acutely what it means to be one grain of sand on a very large beach.
